With her help, I got a good grade in the next exam.

True friends also know how to share. Last weekend, Lily won a ticket to a concert of our favorite singer. She3 invited me to go with her. We sang and cheered together during the concert, and that day became one of my happiest memories.

It's not easy to keep a friendship. We need to be honest and4 with each other. Once, I forgot to return Lily's storybook on time. I told her the truth and apologized. She smiled and said, "It's okay. Just remember to return it next time." Such understanding makes our friendship5 stronger.

Is she kind? Does he like parties? Sometimes it's not easy to know that, but we can find out whether a person is an introvert (内向的人) or an extrovert (外向的人). Introverts are usually quiet and they spend lots of time staying by themselves. Being with people makes them feel tired. And they usually spend a lot of time thinking and take more time to make decisions. However, extroverts are very excited when they are with many people. They enjoy talking with people and they usually make decisions quickly.

Some people may think that introverts are shy. But in fact, being an introvert can be a great thing sometimes. Here are some examples.

Introverts often notice more things than others. When others are busy talking, introverts are more likely to notice things like body language and people's faces (脸). Extroverts might not notice these.

Introverts are better listeners when they have a talk with others. They're less likely to cut in before a person finishes speaking. And because introverts like to think carefully about things, they're more likely to listen to everything others say before they talk to them.

Introverts can also be great leaders (领导者). They know the people in their groups very well. So they can ask the right people to help them do great work.

Although introverts may find being with other people tiring, that doesn't mean they don't have or want friends. In fact, it means they make friends with others very carefully. Once they decide to bring those people into their lives, they will be very friendly to them.

    Introverts and Extroverts

  • 13、Winter is hard for most animals, so some birds and animals travel south for the winter.

The groundhog (土拨鼠), however, lives through winter in a different way. As soon as it feels the weather turning cold, it starts to dig a hole (挖洞) at least 1.5 metres deep (深). There it makes a comfortable home with leaves and grass. It spends the cold winter months in its bed under the ground and it won't come out until spring.

The groundhog doesn't eat at all during the winter. Instead, it eats as much and as often as it can during the summer. As winter comes, the groundhog becomes so heavy that it can hardly move. When it wants to sleep, it goes back to the hole and falls into a deep sleep. Its breathing almost stops, its heartbeat (心跳) slows, and its body temperature falls to just above 0℃ during the sleep. When it gets up in spring, its weight is only half of that in autumn. By February or March, it's ready to leave its hole.

So years ago, people often waited for the first groundhog to go out of the hole. When it did, they knew spring was coming. There are some stories about it. One of them is about a groundhog called Phil. This animal could tell the weather. Phil went out of the hole and looked around every February 2nd. "After morning self-study, we have 8 classes, and then evening classes until 8:30 p.m. I get home at 9:00 p.m., but I still need to finish math worksheets and English reading tasks. By 11:30 p.m., my eyes are heavy."

Lucy's favorite activity was drawing—she used to win prizes in school art competitions. But now, her sketchbook is buried under piles of textbooks. "Mom took away my colored pencils last month. ‘Focus on exams first!' she said. Even weekends are full: I have math and physics tutoring on Saturday, English on Sunday," she adds. "Last week, I fell asleep during class. The teacher thought I was lazy—I wanted to cry."

Some students think study pressure is normal. "My dad always says, ‘Pressure makes diamonds!' laughs Tom, Lucy's classmate." But I told him, ‘Diamonds need time to form too!' We should take 10-minute breaks between study sessions or talk to parents—they might not know we're this tired."

The old man replied. "Well, my child, do you know we all have a white wolf and a black wolf inside us? The white wolf is filled with good emotions(情绪) such as love, hope and courage. However, the black wolf is filled with bad emotions, like fear, anger and regret. The two wolves are in everyone's chest(胸膛) , and they often fight each other."

Then he stopped. There was complete silence and all the children were curiously looking toward him. At last, the child that asked the first question could not wait any more and broke the silence, "But Grandfather, how can we make the white wolf win?"

The old man smiled and said, "That's simple—feed the white wolf often, and make it stronger."
