Under the golden roofs of the Forbidden City, where red walls shine in the afternoon sun, a different kind of "resident (居民)" walks among the ancient buildings. These little cats, known as Gongmao or "imperial (皇帝的) cats", are now "ruling" a very different palace, which is full of tourists holding cameras and phones.

Visitors kindly call them the "clawed guards", a nickname (昵称) that reflects both where they live and what they do: keeping a watch on the treasures of the imperial city. It is said that more than 200 cats live in the palace today. Many are believed to be the descendants (后代) of the cats kept during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Since the Ming Dynasty, cats have been officially kept inside the Forbidden City.

At that time, their main "job" was to protect important documents, silk and artifacts (手工艺品) from mice. In the past, these cats were even given official titles. Later, they gradually became the beloved pets of concubines (妃嫔) and princesses. For those who have worked in the Forbidden City for many years, the cats' contributions remain clear. One staff member recalled that when he began working at the museum in 1977, many historical pieces were damaged by mice. "But in recent years," he said,"I haven't seen a single mouse." The cats did a good job in protecting important historical pieces all the time.

Today, each cat is registered and named by staff members. Having lived there for so long, the cats lead a regular life. Cat lovers have even created "palace cat-finding maps" and offered the best time to see them. According to online posts, the cats are fed around 3 pm every day. Some of the best places to find the cats are the Treasure Gallery, the Jingren Palace and the Shoukang Palace.

"Grandma", a tiny game under just five minutes, unexpectedly became popular. Its 32-year-old creator Zhou Yichen was the most surprised. Unlike modern games, it has no voice acting (配音), complex plots (复杂情节) or exciting action. Players only need to care for a grandma who has fallen and got hurt.

Players use the arrow keys(箭头键) to move around her house and simply answer "yes or no" questions: Will you sit with Grandma at the dinner table? Do you want to let her rest in bed? Each "yes" leads to a short, silent scene: Grandma slowly walking to the table or smiling in fresh air. And that's it. No levels, no achievements. It's just about taking care of Grandma over and over. But everyone who played it believed: "That's why it is so touching."

For Zhou, this game is a personal way to remember his grandma. In spring 2024, his 95-year-old grandma fell at home. She lived through it, but never fullyrecovered. Zhou took care of her, feeling helpless as her health got worse. He then decided to "keep" her in pixels (像素).

For a long time, the game was unfinished. Zhou designed the main plot but didn't know how it should end. In September 2024, he dreamed of a bird carrying his grandma away. Weeks later, she passed away. Not long after that, he finished the ending: after putting Grandma to bed, the character dreams of that bird. When he wakes up, she is gone. Only the road outside the house remains, leading far away, with him walking alone.

"The game doesn't keep her alive," Zhou said quietly, "but it can hold memories."

He didn't get far when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched his arm to feel how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then appeared. It was the face of Injun Joe.

20、On September 3, 2025, Tian'anmen Square witnessed (见证) a big military parade to mark the 80th anniversary (纪念日) of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Thousands of people gathered early to watch this historic event, which sent a strong message of peace and strength to the world.

It began with a serious ceremony. President Xi reviewed the troops and gave a speech. Behind him stood big buildings shaped like the Great Wall, with the numbers "1945" and "2025", which symbolized the long journey from victory to modern progress. More than 20 foreign leaders attended the event, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, showing international support for China's efforts to remember history and develop peace.

China's newest military progress was shown in the parade (阅兵). More than 10000 soldiers walked in very tidy lines, and after them came hundreds of modern weapons. These included items such as driverless fighting machines, super-fast missiles (导弹), and tools for internet battles. Many weapons were shown publicly for the first time ever, such as systems to stop drones and items for fighting under the sea.

Over 35 million Chinese soldiers and common people lost their lives, and the country fought for 14 years to stop Japan's invasion. The parade let the world know about these losses and showed China's recent role as a global peacekeeper.

The parade ended with a flight show of more than 100 planes, leaving colorful trails in the sky. President Xi's speech stressed again that China's promise is to keep world peace and its goals for becoming modern. As the country moves to become a fully modern society by 2035, the event showed both its pride in history and its hopes for the future.
