Bridging Cultures Through Communication
In our connected world, cross-cultural communication is becoming very important. When people from different countries meet, understanding cultural differences can help avoid problems and create friendships.
The first lesson is about body language. In Western cultures, a strong handshake shows confidence. But in Japan, people usually bow slightly instead. Americans think eye contact means honesty, while in some Asian countries, too much eye contact may seem impolite.
Good listening is another key. In Finland, people often stay silent for a moment after someone speaks to show respect. However, in Brazil, silence might make people uncomfortable.
Speaking local expressions builds trust. When my classmate Emma visited Paris, saying "Bonjour (hello)" and "Merci (thank you)" made French people smile. But direct translation sometimes fails. The Chinese idiom "马马虎虎" (horse-horse-tiger-tiger) actually means "just okay", which often makes foreigners puzzled.
To improve cross-cultural communication, watch foreign movies, read travel books, or join international school projects. Never be afraid to ask friendly questions like "Could you teach me a local custom?" Remember, mistakes are normal.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics surprisingly didn't go to a typical physicist, instead, to two scientists in machine learning: John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton. What did they do? Why can they win the Nobel Prize?
John and Geoffrey used rules from physics to make discoveries in machine learning, and it pushed the development of AI. This is a perfect example of joining ideas from different subjects to achieve a breakthrough (突破). It's cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) learning at its best.
In simple terms, cross-disciplinary learning is about not focusing on just one subject. It means being open to ideas from different fields—whether it's science, art, history or technology—and using that knowledge to improve our own understanding.
Cross-disciplinary learning is nothing new. We have seen many examples over the centuries. Even the ancient Greeks practiced it. They believed that music, math and astronomy (天文学) were interconnected. This helped them make great discoveries.
This is why, nowadays, schools are pushing cross-disciplinary studies. They hope that students can go to different fields and make a meaningful impact.
Cross-disciplinary learning can help you gain new opinions, find creative solutions and, most importantly, better prepare you to deal with the complex challenges (挑战) of tomorrow. Sometimes the best ideas are found in the most unexpected places. So, go ahead, mix it up, learn from everything, and see how far it takes you!

15、Sign language is the main way for deaf people to communicate. Since they can't hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters are there to help.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her first language. "I picked up sign language before I could even talk, as my parents are deaf," she recalled. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law firm (律师事务所) in Chongqing. Her work needs her to interpret for deaf people.
Hao sometimes feels stressed at work because accuracy is important in interpretations for law firms. So she can't make mistakes and has to explain things carefully. Her stress also comes from the fact that sign language has "dialects (方言)". The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language.
Having traveled to over 30 cities in China because of the job, she has learned about the special ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with her deaf coworkers to improve herself. "My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them," Hao said.
