I have always wanted to be a volunteer in my community. Last month, my dream finally .

I joined the community volunteer team to help the elderly people who live alone. At first, I was a little nervous. I was afraid that they would feel  and didn't want to talk with me. But when I visited the first old lady, Mrs. Li, she welcomed me warmly. She told me stories about her life when she was young, and I listened to her carefully. We became friends soon.

Every weekend, I go to visit them. I help them clean the house, buy vegetables, and teach them how to use smart phones. They are always very happy to see me. Last week, we held a party for the elderly, and many of them sang and danced. They said they felt very warm  our care.

I am so  myself. Being a volunteer not only helps others, but also makes me grow a lot. I will never  this meaningful thing, and I will call on more people to join us.

The Yangtze Finless Porpoise, known as the "smiling angel of the Yangtze River", is a national first-class protected animal in China. It only lives in the Yangtze River, and Wuhan is one of the most important habitats for this lovely animal.

In recent years, with the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River and the efforts of protection workers, the number of Yangtze Finless Porpoises has been increasing. According to the latest report, the number of porpoises in the Yangtze River has reached 1249 in 2023, which is a big increase from 1012 in 2017. In Wuhan section of the Yangtze River, people can often see porpoises jumping out of the water, especially in the Tianxingzhou and Baishazhou areas.

Many people in Wuhan have joined the porpoise protection team. There are over 2000 volunteer monitors in Wuhan, who take photos of porpoises, record their living conditions, and report any illegal activities that may hurt them. Every weekend, many students from middle schools and universities also take part in the protection activities. They give out leaflets to tell people how to protect the porpoises and the Yangtze River.

"Seeing the porpoises swimming freely in the river is the happiest thing for me," said Zhang Xianfeng, a 60-year-old volunteer who has been protecting porpoises for over 10 years. "The Yangtze River is our mother river, and the porpoises are our friends. We must do our best to protect them, so that our children can also see these smiling angels in the future."

The protection of the Yangtze Finless Porpoise is a long-term task. It needs everyone's effort. As the old saying goes, "Protecting the porpoises is protecting the Yangtze River, and protecting the Yangtze River is protecting ourselves."

When I was in Grade 8, I was very afraid to speak English in class. I was always worried that I would make mistakes and my classmates would laugh at me. So I always kept silent in English class, even when I knew the answer.

One day, our English teacher Ms. Li asked us to give a speech in front of the class. The topic was "My Dream". I was so nervous that I didn't sleep well the night before. I wrote the speech again and again, and practiced it over 100 times. I even recorded my voice to make sure my pronunciation was correct.

When the day came, I stood on the platform, my legs were shaking and my heart was beating fast. I looked at the whole class, and I almost couldn't say a word. Then I looked at Ms. Li, and she smiled at me warmly. Her smile was like a bright light, which gave me courage. I took a deep breath and started to speak. I spoke slowly and clearly, and I didn't stop until I finished the whole speech.

To my surprise, my classmates all clapped for me warmly. Ms. Li walked up to me and said, "Well done! Your speech is wonderful, and you are very brave to stand here and show yourself." I was so happy that I almost cried. For the first time, I felt confident about speaking English.

After that, I changed a lot. I no longer feared to speak English in class. Every time the teacher asked a question, I put up my hand actively. I joined the school English club, and took part in many English speaking competitions. I even won the first prize in the city's middle school English speech competition last year.

Now I know that no one is born good at everything. If you want to overcome your fear, just take the first step bravely. Every small progress will make you better and better. I will always remember Ms. Li's smile, which lights up my way of learning English forever.

Wuhan Yellow Crane Tower Study Tour Notice

We are going to have a study tour to the Yellow Crane Tower, one of the most famous landmarks of Wuhan, on Friday, April 18th. Here is the information you need to know.

Schedule:

• 7:30 a.m. Meet at the school gate and take the school bus to the Yellow Crane Tower.

• 9:00 a.m. Visit the tower with a guide, learn about its 1800-year history and classic poems about it.

• 11:30 a.m. Have a picnic in the nearby Shouyi Park.

• 1:30 p.m. Take part in the calligraphy and poem writing experience activity.

• 3:30 p.m. Take the school bus back to school.

Tips:

1. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as we will walk a lot.

2. You can bring a water bottle, a notebook and a pen.

3. Please don't bring too much money or expensive things.

4. You must follow the teachers' and the guide's rules, and don't run around alone.

Last month, I took part in the volunteer activity for the Wuhan Marathon. I was so1 when I got the chance, because I had always wanted to do something for this big event in my hometown.

On the day of the marathon, I got up very early2 the sun was just rising. I put on my volunteer uniform and went to the assigned place. My job was to 3 water and snacks to the runners.

When the first runners passed by, I was so excited that I 4 my hands and shouted "Come on!" loudly. Some runners smiled and nodded to me,5 others were too tired to say anything. But I could see the 6 in their eyes when they took the water.
