Her father, a cook, took her into the kitchen. He asked his daughter to pour water into three pans (平底锅) and put them on the fire to boil (煮沸). After the water boiled, he put some potatoes into the first pan, some eggs into the second pan and coffee beans into the last one.

"What's the meaning, Father?" she asked.
"The strong and hard potatoes became soft and weak after boiling. The fragile (脆弱的) eggs became hard in the boiling water. The coffee beans were very special, but they changed the water around them," her father said, "As you can see, each thing responded (反应) differently to the boiling water."

①Why not find a new friend in 2025— yourself! You may want to get love and care from a good friendship. Well, you shouldn't have to go far to find them.
②Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. You give love and care to your friends and family. Then give yourself too. Becky Goddard-Hill, the writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says it means speaking to yourself with kindness. It also means taking really good care of your body and mind.
③Studies show that self-love is good for your schoolwork, health and friendships. Self-love makes you believe in yourself. It makes you feel that you deserve(值得) good things, such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn't mean you'll be happy all the time. But when you face challenges, you will be confident.
④Start by being kind instead of being angry. When you make a mistake, don't get angry with yourself. You can tell yourself," Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. It's OK. Why did I make this mistake? I need to find it out and avoid it next time. Remember that no one is perfect. Becky also suggests writing down your strengths." Looking at the list often will help bring out the best in you," says Becky.

When I was a teenager, I joined a six-week summer learning camp (度假营) at a university. We had classes in the morning and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball field for a game of one-on-one.
At that time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. Over time, I fell behind. Imade up my mind, drove hard to the basket, and missed it! The ball bounced off the rim (从篮筐弹回). Just as I jumped up to catch it, I saw an elbow(肘) above my face. When Claude caught the ball, his elbow hit my eye hard. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying "sorry" over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but I didn't mind. For years afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude's elbow of death. When you are not yourself, it can be hard to know where the feeling comes from. The HALT method (方法)is a good reminder to explore your feelings and look after yourself. HALT means stop and it also stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. You can find out what's causing you trouble by asking yourself questions like" Am I hungry/angry/ lonely/ tired?"
Here is some feedback (反馈意见)from our friends using the HALT method.
Anita, 14 years old
With the help of the method, I notice I get angry or impatient when I feel uncomfortable, for example, seeing someone being treated unfairly or feeling physically tired. To help myself, I push my stress ball and write down how I feel. This helps me understand why I'm feeling this way.
Thomas, 15 years old
Dr Suzy Reading taught me to try the HALT method every time I felt down. She also advised me to talk to people I trusted about how I felt. And now I understand it is OK to feel lonely, down or worried. And thinking too much makes me tired. Doing things like listening to music, exercising or making creative artwork can truly help me feel better. I suggest you have a try.
