An about 2-metre-wide alley（巷子）, or "Liu Chi Xiang" in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui.

There is an  story behind it. During the Qing Dynasty, Minister（丞相）Zhang Ying received a  from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had argued with their neighbour Wu and  family over the boundary（分界线）between their houses. Since both  had strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved.

Zhang's family  the letter hoping that Zhang could make their neighbour give in. However, Zhang replied with a poem. His family members understood that the close relationship with their neighbour was more  and that the wall was only a temporary（暂时的）matter. So, they decided to  their wall back about one metre. The Wu family was  touched by this act. In turn, they moved back another metre  they built their wall. It created an about two-metre-wide narrow "alley"  the houses.

Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley shows the values of tolerance and harmony（宽容与和谐）that are widely admired in China.

Now, there is a Food Saving and Anti-Food Waste（反浪费）Action Plan. It makes us notice the serious food waste problem. Around one-third of the world's food is wasted every year. In China, about 17-18 million tons of food are wasted in restaurants each year. At school, we can often see students throw away a lot of food in the dining hall. They dislike the food or take too much without thinking. But they don't realize how hard farmers work to grow it.

Restaurants are also part of the problem. Some people order too many dishes to show off or don't know how much to order. So a lot of food is left uneaten. Now, restaurants are asked to offer smaller dishes and remind customers to take leftovers home.

We students should start from small things. We can take the right amount of food. When we are in a restaurant with our parents, we can help them order properly. If everyone does this, we can save a lot of food and make the world better. Let's all take part in the food-saving action.

The Taklimakan Desert（塔克拉玛干沙漠）is the largest desert in our country. It is in the northwest of China. It is about 337,600 square kilometers. And there are a lot of sandstorms coming from it. These sandstorms are very bad for nature and the people living nearby. So, people decided to start a big project to build a green belt around the desert.

By the end of 2023,2,761 kilometers of the green belt had been built. In 2024, another 285 kilometers were added. Now, the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt around it.

The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, there are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw, and long lines of trees. These things work together well to keep the desert from getting bigger.

When the green belt around the desert was successfully built, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and weaker sandstorms now. Second, it protected the farming near the desert, so farmers can grow food more easily. Also, the living areas in cities and the countryside are better. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less damage（伤害）to things like roads and buildings, and more tourists come. So, local people can make more money. This project shows China's determination to stop the desert from getting worse and improve the environment. It also shows that when humans put in a lot of effort and use smart science, we can make a big difference to nature!

Most kids have pet cats or dogs, but 2-year-old Otto has an unusual friend—a crow（乌鸦）named Russell!

Millions of hearts were moved when Luna shared on her social media this truly special bond（纽带）between her son Otto and the wild bird.

Last August, the woman shared on her social media that she had brought home a baby crow. As its parents were missing, the family decided to keep the little bird and named him Russell.

Learning languages has many advantages, such as feeling confident when travelling abroad, making friends (international), being able to read books in the original (原版的), and a lot more, like studying and working in other (country). Most people live under the stereotype (刻板印象) that they lose (they) learning abilities with age. However, if (face) with a challenge when there is no other way except to learn the new foreign language, adult people can show great results. Before (decide) how to learn a new language, the first thing is to decide in which situation the language is to be used.

If the target is, for example, (travel) or find new business at some international events, a course focusing speaking practice is recommended. The basic vocabulary and conversational structures (结构), studied and practised heavily during a short period of time, may lead to the needed result, which might be the ability to communicate on the streets or support small business talk. Usually, the two or three months of study are enough to start communicating. However, if brought back shortly to the usual environment, the person might lose the majority of knowledge if there would not be any supporting practice afterwards. Unfortunately, without practical usage further development, the language abilities may go away as easily as they came. The language cannot (learn) once and forever.

When I was a little boy, I, together with my dog Doobie and parents, lived across a river from the main road. The only way to get to our house was across an aged, wooden1. Study lead author Julia Wolfson, associate professor in the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School and her co-authors wanted to test how labeling climate change impacts of fast-food menu items might lead people to choose less red meat. Eating too much red meat has been linked to many health problems. Eating less red meat would also help lower greenhouse gas emissions (排放).

More than 5,000 participants were shown a sample menu and asked to choose a single item for dinner. One group of participants received a menu with non-red meat items such as chicken sandwiches labeled "low climate impact". Another group received a menu with red meat items-burgers labeled "high climate impact". A third control group received menus without climate labels.

Both the high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat choices compared to the control group. Menus with a high climate impact label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23 percent compared to the control group. Menus that included low climate impact labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10 percent more participants than those in the control group. "These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable (可持续的) food choices in a fast food setting", says Wolfson.

While encouraging on the whole, the results suggest that positive "low climate impact" labels are less effective in encouraging sustainable food choices compared to "high climate impact" labels. At the same time, climate labels may have the unwanted side effect of making a choice seem healthier than it actually is.

"An undeserved health halo (光环) given to unhealthy menu items could encourage people to overeat them." Wolfson says, "So we have to look for labeling strategies that create ‘win-wins' for encouraging both more sustainable and healthy choices."

To be honest, it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life, I can't tell you the number of times that I heard, "Bob, if you'd just change your attitude, you would do a lot better." At that time, I didn't know what attitude was, let alone know how to change it!

Thus, it would appear as if they were born with bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life. However, there are others who are forever winning and living the good life. They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen. They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another. They're in control of their life. Their wins are a matter of choice.

You can experience that kind of life as well, you only need to decide. Dorothea Brande once said, "Act as if it were impossible to fail," and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day, you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter what your circumstances are. Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. In September, Ryder's father, Tim, put up a patio (露台) umbrella at the end of his driveway to provide some shelter. However, with the wind and rain here in New England, it didn't help much and Ryder still got wet and cold. Desperately, Tim who runs an electronics company, placed a post on Facebook, turning to his community to see if anyone could have an old bus hut (棚) which helps to protect Ryder from the bad weather.

After knowing about Ryder's problem, three local students in Bradford, Rhode Island, decided to build a new bus hut for Ryder during their construction lessons, worrying that snow would be falling soon and Ryder would have a rough time. They worked hard on the project for several weeks, learning new skills through YouTube to create the structure. About $300 worth of wood was donated and the rest of the materials were purchased by Tim for $600. The hut was so huge that it could accommodate both Ryder and one of his parents or a nurse comfortably, and was finally delivered to their home six weeks later on November 2.

"We were shocked. It was much bigger than we expected. Ryder loved it. He did like to go out in it every day before school," Tim said. The family sent a photo of Ryder in the bus shelter and thanked the teens for their hard work. This project brought his community together, showing that there is kindness in this world.
