A lion ruled(统治) over a forest. One day, the lion went out to look for food. On his way, he saw a big cave, and thought to himself, "It is for sure that some animal must be living in this big cave. I will hide inside the cave and wait for my dinner to arrive."

The cave was home to a jackal(豺). The jackal came back later and he noticed the footprints(足迹) of the lion leading into the cave, but could not find any footprints coming out.

He thought, "If there is a lion in the cave, I will be dead as soon as I come in." The jackal thought of a plan and began to shout, "Hello, Cave! Can I come inside?"

He waited for a while and shouted again, "Hello, Cave! Did you forget our rule? Every day, you answer me before I come in. Why are you quiet today? I will then go to another cave if you do not reply."

On hearing this, the lion thought, "The cave must reply to the jackal when he returns. It is because I am inside that the cave is not replying today. I must invite him to come in on behalf of(代表) the cave, or the jackal will go away."

So, the lion replied from inside the cave, "Hello, Jackal, you can come in. It is safe inside." The jackal at once ran away as fast as he could and saved himself.

Long long ago, the sky broke into pieces and fell down. Fires burned the forests, and huge floods covered the fields. People lost their homes and had to hide in caves(洞穴). Goddess Nüwa decided to fix the sky and save the world.

Nüwa travelled far to collect enough five-coloured stones. Then she built a big fire on a high mountain to melt(融化) them for nine days and nights. At the same time, Nüwa used a magic sword to kill a black dragon that had caused floods in villages. She also took four legs from a giant turtle to hold the four corners of the sky.

When the five-coloured stones turned into hot, colourful liquid(液体) in the pot, Nüwa carried it and flew to the sky. The wind blew strongly, trying to push her back; the cold air made her shake and the burning liquid hurt her hands. But Nüwa kept working, putting the liquid on the broken parts bit by bit. With all her strength,she filled the last hole. Then the sky became blue again.

The floods stopped, and the fires went out. People cheered and said thanks to Nüwa. People also learned a lesson: When life feels broken like the sky, think of Nüwa. Face challenges bravely and keep trying, even big problems can be worked out.

Helping others is easier than you think. You don't need to wait to become a rich man like Bill Gates to help the poor. You can become a volunteer. And by doing so, you can become a better and happier person.

For example, homeless people who sleep in the cold, poor children who have no parents to take care of and can't go to school. All of these are OK.

Sometimes it isn't only money— you can give up several hours each week as a volunteer, you can help teach the poor children, or you can share a meal with a hungry child.

Tell people about volunteer work.

Never give up.

Because you' re a volunteer, you must be ready to help others for being a volunteer.
