It was one day in March. A storm hitCalifornia. The rainstorm began early in the morning and lasted for several hours. Martin was driving on Runner Road carefully when he made his way home. Finally, a river flooded(淹没) the road. The water swept the car off the road and made it stop meters away. Sitting in the car,Martin was scared. The water was rising so quickly that he thought he was going to die.

On the road right behind Martin was a delivery driver. After the man saw the serious accident, he came to help. First, he took the straps(带子) and tied(系) Martin's car to the nearby posts. Then he climbed onto the top of the car. He tried to break a window with his hands but he couldn't make it, so he found a rock. He shouted to Martin to move away from the window.After that, he used the rock to hit the window over and over again. Finally, the glass broke.Martin got out of the car and they ran to dry land safely(安全地).

"The man didn't even tell me his name,"Martin said later. "I want to show my thanks to the kind stranger".

Last Saturday, I took a walk with my six-year-old daughter Lily along the XiangjiangRiver. A group of people wearing red waistcoats(马甲) came into our view. Lily was curious (好奇的) about them, so I advised her to find the 1 by herself.

Lily interviewed Wang Yongheng and got her answer. He is a retired worker in his 50s. He told her that they were patrolling (巡逻) the river to stop people from drowning (溺水). He has been doing that since his son was 2 by people at a swimming pool many years ago. At the age of3, the swimming ring of Wang's son was broken while he was playing in the 3 . "Without the ring, my son went underwater. 4 I didn't hear him shouting for help. 5 , a girl found my son in danger. She jumped into the water to save him. And a few other people joined in the action. My son was 6 in less than two minutes. Without those 7 people, I might have lost my son," Wang said.

On Saturday, an underwater volcano inTonga erupted in the South Pacific Ocean.Tonga is an island nation in the South PacificOcean, home to about 105, 000 people. The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-HungaHa' apai, is located off the coast of Tonga. Even though the volcano was underwater, it sent lots of gas, ash and stones 12 miles into the sky.

It took a while to get reports from Tonga because the event knocked out internet service in the area. Like most island nations, Tonga gets its internet through a cable that runs deep under the sea. Experts say it's not yet clear whether the cable was broken during the event or simply lost power.

A four-foot wave hit the capital,Nuku' alofa. People in low-lying areas were forced to go to higher ground. There are reports of serious damage in Tonga. Many houses near the shore were flooded. At present, the biggest danger is probably from the smoke and ash from the volcano that has covered much of Tonga.The ash makes the air dangerous to breathe,and it is believed to have polluted many sources of drinking water.

New Zealand and Australia have sent teams to Tonga to help out. Some of the teams will use airplanes to get a better idea of the damage across the island nation. The large cloud of ash high above Tonga is making it impossible to get a good picture of what's happening in the area from high in the air.
