A great little wish

A few weeks ago, I read about a girl named Hope Elizabeth Stout. After learning more about her life, I began to know that she was named "Hope" for a good reason.

In June 2003, Stout was very much like any other 12-year-old girl. She was going on a beach trip with her family. But a sudden pain (疼痛) in her knee changed everything. After some tests, doctors found that she had bone cancer (癌症).

Stout had to stay in hospital. She never lost hope and believed that in the end, she would be able to beat (战胜) cancer. However, she became worse and worse. By November, she had to use a wheelchair to get around. Then, something amazing happened.

In the United States, there is the Make-A-Wish (MAW) foundation. It helps children in need realize (实现) their wishes. In November 2003, MAW visited Stout and told the girl she could have anything she wanted.

Stout thought for a few minutes and then answered, "I am still lucky. I went to Disney World and swam with dolphins in Mexico. I went to the beach all the time. Did you just say there are 155 children on your waiting list? Well, my wish is to let them realize their wishes."

It was hard for MAW to realize Stout's wish—it would cost nearly $750.000. However, newspapers, radio and TV stations shared the story. A local company donated $25,000 to MAW.

Sadly, Stout didn't live to see the happy ending of the story. She died on January 4, 2004. After her death, there were more and more donations. On January 16, MAW announced (宣布) that they had raised $1,116, 000—enough to realize all 155 wishes. Finally, Stout's wish came true.

The results of the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children's Invention Awards (广东省少年儿童发明奖) come out! Zhang Xirui, a 13-year-old boy comes first with his smart homework collection robot. Let's take a l at his story.

Why does he want to make a smart homework robot?

At school, students pass their school work, from their group leader to the class representative (课代表), and finally to the teacher. It sounds easy, b sometimes it can go wrong and take a lot of time. To help solve this problem, Zhang invents (发明) a useful t -a smart homework collection robot.

How does the robot work?

The robot uses radio frequency identification (RFID, 射频识别) technology-a reader (阅读器) and a special tag (标签). The tag can share information w talking with each other. Students s need to put their notebooks on the robot. The machine "sees" the notebook and reads its tag. Teachers can connect their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi and know who doesn't hand teachers their homework.

What is Zhang's next plan?

The robot is Zhang's second model. As she tells us, he's planning to make a t one. He hopes to use ultra-high-frequency radio technology (超高频无线电技术) to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That m if you put a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from h of notebooks at once.

How does Zhang feel about inventing?

Zhang dreams of b a scientist when he grows up. He also tries making model airplanes and other c things. "Inventing makes me happy," he tells Shenzhen Satellite TV.

In many people's eyes. Elijah Enwerem is different. He comes from England. The boy has white hair  his skin（皮肤） is white too, because he has albinism, a special illness （疾病）.

Because of this （boy） hair and skin, people often look at him in surprise. At first, this made him very unhappy. He often asked his mother  he looked different from other children. （lucky）, being a model（模特） really helped him.

One day, Elijah's mother （put） some of his photos online. One man saw them and thought the photos were special and Elijah could be a model. She thought Elijah would be （interest） in being a model. So she let her son have a try. It took Elijah a long time （practice） and he made it. And it really helped.

These days, Elijah does very well as a model. He wants to show himself  front of others. He also （help）people with albinism and lets the world know more about the illness.

Now Elijah thought being different is  great thing. After all, everyone is special.

Do you know the Spring Festival Gala (春晚) on CCTV? It's a big and fun show on TV during the Spring Festival. In 2025, some robots (机器人) are on this show and they are really cool!  They dance very well, just like good dancers. People love them a lot. Their name is H1. 

A man named Wang Xingxing makes these great robots. He goes to Shanghai University (大学).  He works hard in the school's lab (实验室). Sometimes, he even stays in the lab during holidays to make his robot idea come true.  Its name is XDog. It is really good at that time. 

After he leaves school, Wang Xingxing starts his own company (公司).  In 2021, another robot from his company was on the Spring Festival Gala. It is a robot ox named Benben. 

Wang Xingxing remembers his school. He often goes back to Shanghai University.  He wants them to follow (追寻) their dreams. He also gives some robots to the school and helps the students with their schoolwork. He is a good example for all of us. He shows us that if we work hard and dream big, we can do many great things.

The sun is slow to appear when Russia's spring starts in March. There is still snow and the weather is cold. It doesn't get warm until May 1st. Although it is known as Labor Day around the world, May 1st is also called Spring Day in Russia. If you visit in March and April, you can expect lower hotel prices and the chance to enjoy events like Women' Day. But May offers clearer skies and streets with fewer people, making it one of the best times to explore Russia.

Summer lasts from June to August and attracts the most tourists due to the warm weather. The beautiful gardens come to life and there are lots of cultural festivals held in the season. In Moscow,temperatures often rise into the 30℃． Sometimes it can be chilly (阴冷的) because of the sudden rain.During these months, you can follow the Russians who travel south to enjoy the beautiful Black Sea and Altai Mountains.

Autumn is a short but beautiful season. After a grey (阴沉的) end to August, the sun often shines throughout September and even into October. This lovely weather is called Indian summer. The forests turn into beautiful colors, making the whole country look amazing. The warm weather is also good for outdoor activities. Also, if you want to enjoy famous ballet (芭蕾舞) performances, this is a good time to visit.

Winter in Russia is not as cold as you might think. Outside of Siberia or the Arctic Circle, temperatures usually stay around -7℃ in January, the coldest month. The beautiful snow is perfect for all kinds of winter sports. Russian New Year celebrations last for two weeks, filled with music,dancing, and feasts (盛宴), making early January a lively time to visit.

So, when is the best time to visit Russia? That's for you to decide!

Michael turned on the radio. He heard what sounded like human (人类) voices. Almost like human voices, that is.

"Earth is near," said one voice. "Prepare to meet the humans."

"Will we take any Earth people home with us?" asked another.

"Yes. Our master commanded (下令) us to bring some back for our experiments (实验)." The radio made a strange sound. Then it became quiet.

Michael noticed some old pictures of aliens on the wall.

"Maybe," thought Michael, "the voices I heard on the radio were not humans. Maybe they were aliens (外星人)! If they have come here before, maybe they will come here again!"

Michael looked at the pictures again and went on to listen to the radio.

"Where will we make our landing (着陆)?" It was the same voice as before.

Michael held the microphone near his mouth and spoke. "Who are you?" he asked. "Where are you?" Was the microphone working? He was not sure. No one seemed to hear him. Or did they?

"We will get to Martinsburg on Sunday at 8:00 p. m., when the ground is clear," the voice said at last.

That was all Michael needed to hear.

"Dad! Aliens are coming!" said Michael. "You have to help me stop them!"

"Slow down, Michael," said Dad. "You know, when I lived here as a child, my friend Gary and I called each other on that radio. One time I said there was a big fire when there really wasn't one. People heard me and they didn't know I was being silly (犯傻的)! We got in big trouble for that."

"Dad, stop telling stories. This is real!"

"Sit down, Michael," said Dad. "Let's listen together."

In the Chinese zodiac (生肖), 2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake (1.29, 2025—2.16, 2026). Many people think snakes are scary. But in traditional Chinese culture, snakes are a symbol of something magic and powerful.  

Do you know why Nyuwa, the creator of men has a human head and a snake body? That's because ancient Chinese think snakes mean rebirth—new life. And Nyuwa is able to give life to humans that she creates with yellow earth. But how can snakes mean rebirth? Because snakes usually "sleep" and "take off their old clothes"—shed skin (蜕皮) in winter and "wake up" in spring. In ancient people's eyes, the snakes seemed to have died, but then they shed their skin and came back to life. Nowadays, some medical universities still put snakes on their school badges (校徽), wishing the doctors can give life back to their patients.  

Have you read the ancient Chinese book Shan Hai Jing? In the book, there are gods with snakes around their ears or in their hands and these gods can cross between life and death. Let me tell you why. Starting from ancient China, humans lived on the Earth and the dead went to the underworld. Snakes dug into the ground and went to the underworld. It was believed that snakes were the bridge between life and death.  

In China, snakes are also known as the little dragons. That may be the reason why the snake comes right after the dragon in the Chinese zodiac.

School Trip

In the forest, two friends, Tony the elephant and Eric the fox, enjoy playing together. But sometimes they have different 1 . One morning, when they argue (争论), their friend Simba the lion comes over.

"It's better to be big and 2 !" Tony says.

"No! Being quick and smart is more important!" Eric says. "Simba, what do you think?"

Simba doesn't 3 the question. He asks for help 4 and says, "My friends, we need 5 for tomorrow's party in the village across the river. Could you bring some back?"

"Sure," Tony and Eric say and head there.

Later, Eric collects a full bag of apples and then jumps on Tony's 13 again. Together, they come back.

"It's not important. The important thing is to help each other and work together," Tony says.

The two friends look at each other and smile.
