Does a tiger go to a dentist when it has a toothache? This is not a joke  a serious question. Tigers have bad teeth and need dental care, just like humans. Tooth problems in tigers can become even (bad) and may kill them.

Heman Bekele is a young scientist. This boy from the US is working on a special (发明) to treat skin cancer(皮肤癌). Heman was born in Africa. He(搬到) to the US with his family when he was 4. He remembered seeing many people in Africa working in the (炎热的) sun without protection for their skin. It made them get skin cancer easily. 

However, treating skin cancer costs a lot of money— usually about 40, 000 dollars. Few people can (承担得起) it. Heman wondered if there was a cheaper way. He thought of adding a medicine to the soap since (每人) uses it for cleaning. So the soap would probably be the best (选择). 

Heman needed help to bring his idea to life. In 2023, he competed in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He gave a  (演讲) in front of a group of scientists and shared his idea. Finally, he won the first prize of $25, 000 and was on the  (名单;列表) of America's Top Young Scientist of the Year. Since then, Heman has been working on developing the soap with a scientist. They have  (已经) had some tests on it. Although it still takes a long time, he is  (自豪的) of the work and hopes other young people can try out their new ideas, too. 

The minute Anne got home from school, the 11-year-old schoolgirl went to her mom.

Bottles for a Cause

When Genshu Price was 10, he started recycling(回收利用) bottles to raise money for college. Now 16, Genshu uses the money to help his community in Hawaii. The following is an interview with Genshu.

I' ve always been interested in learning. To help raise money for my own education, I started recycling bottles. After I started, I noticed that many kids and families growing up here in Hawaii were facing the same problem.     So I decided to help them and set up my organization, Bottles4College. 

·How has Bottles4College grown?

It has grown faster than I expected.  Through recycling events, Bottles4College has recycled over 1.7 million bottles, successfully raising over $40, 000. 

·How did you raise money after the Maui wildfires?

I set up a similar organization, Bottles4Maui, to help people who suffered from the Maui wildfires in 2023.  The money went directly to those people. 

·Do you have any advice for kids who want to help others?

 Giving back to your community is a great chance, so please do all you can to help others. Always look to your community and environment to find your support. Also look for areas where you can make a difference to improve the community. 

What do you think of Bottles4College? Why?(no more than 15 words)

Beep！ Beep！ Beep！ Cody woke up. The alarm？ It was Saturday！ Then he remembered. It was their first day of training. Cody hurried to meet his friends at the park. He sat next to Michael, whose eyes were almost closed. 

Ethan handed each of them a manual(使用手册). "Our first day of cross-country season is in two weeks. Make sure to read your running manual before that. "

Cody stared at the manual in his hands. "1001 Running Tips?"

"Who needs that many tips?" Michael asked. 

"We do, " Ethan answered.

"I don't even know what that means, " Cody said. 

Ethan smiled and pointed to the manual. "Check out number 12 of 1001 Training Tips. "

Michael begged. "Please, let's just get going. "

"We still need sunscreen and to drink some water, " Ethan said. 

When they'd all put on sunscreen and drunk some water, Cody said, "You' ve thought of everything, Ethan. "

"Yep. Let's go, " Michael said, running in place. 

"I'm not sure we' re ready, " said Ethan. 

"We won't know until we try, " Michael said. 

"Ethan takes the lead, " said Cody. 

"Good idea, " Ethan said. 

Cody continued, "But I' ll decide when to start. "

Michael smiled widely. "Ready, set. . . "

Today, it's more difficult to tell what to trust online. AI-based information is all over the Internet. But not everything that looks like a"fact" is truly a fact. It's easy to get lost in all that noise. That's why I was excited to discover World Book recently. Since 1925, the company has printed a new edition of its encyclopedia(百科全书) almost every year. Without thinking twice, I ordered a copy of the 2024 edition. 

A week later, the encyclopedia arrived in a small but heavy box. I unpacked the 22 books with care. It might sound silly, but I really enjoyed feeling the weight of all that knowledge in my hands. 

There were no pop-ups(弹窗) or ads. It was just me and knowledge. 

The encyclopedia keeps up with modern topics. Even sports stars who won medals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 can be found. So far, I' ve read about 30 entries(条目). They are all accurate(准确的) and well-written. 

One day, I showed the encyclopedia to my kids. They had never seen a printed encyclopedia before and were surprised by its size. I had hoped these books would help them with their schoolwork, but they were not interested in them at all. After all, teenagers are glued to the Internet and prefer online encyclopedias like Wikipedia. 

I don't mind if the encyclopedia is just for me. Every morning at breakfast, I take out a book and step in. The encyclopedia has helped me refresh my knowledge on many subjects. And I'm confident that it's more trustworthy than any AI writer. 

You may be wondering, "Why would someone collect art toys?" After all, aren't toys for kids?Well, that's what you'd be surprised at. Art toys are much more than simple playthings. They' re pieces of art, rich in creativity and culture. Let's find out why the collectors are so crazy about them.

How I Will Spend a Meaningful Winter Vacation

As the term is coming to an end, 

The Xuelong-2 is China's first domestically-built(本国建造的) icebreaker. It is very important. It (build) in 2017. It began to be used in 2019. It helps us learn more about the polar regions. 

The 41st Antarctic expedition(南极考察) started in November, 2024. Recently, the Xuelong-2icebreaker (reach) the Antarctic ice sheet. It is busy (break) ice. It is also guiding the Xuelong to Zhongshan Station. 

This icebreaker is (exact) designed for polar work. It is 122. 5 meters long and22. 32 meters wide. When it breaks ice, it can break ice  is 1. 5 meters thick with0. 2 meters of snow on it. 

The Xuelong-2 is special. It can break ice with both the front and the back. The front of the ship is like a knife for ice. It can break ice well.  the ice is too thick, it can move back a little and then go forward fast to break the ice. The back of the ship is much (strong). It has a nice shape. The two propellers(螺旋桨) can break the ice under the water and move the broken ice away. 

The Xuelong-2 has good scientific research things on it. It is like  moving research place. Scientists on the ship can study many things about the polar environment, such as ocean currents, weather (change) and different animals and plants. It provides them a good platform for collecting important data and samples(样本).

As one of the leading causes of death, obesity(肥胖) has become a big health problem in China.  this problem, China has made the first set of rules for treating obesity. The rules cover many treatment areas, such as food, and exercise. Their goal is to make treatment  and protect patients better. Doctors say that it's not too difficult for people to control their . If they can eat healthily and regularly, they can live more happily.

Yes— it' s not necessary to stay at home.    Children get about five to eight colds per year, which would mean missing a lot of class time if they didn't go to school. Falling behind is stressful, and losing social time with classmates can make kids sad.  And getting germs(细菌)sometimes helps us get stronger against sickness. That's necessary for a healthy immune(免疫)system. 

No— it's not fair to others.   It's common sense(常识):  Even if you' re starting to improve, you might get sick again if you push yourself too much. If you' re coughing in class, you' re disturbing(打扰) teachers and other students and spreading your germs. And if they get sick, they' ll have to miss school, too. 

Will you go to school or stay at home if you are sick? Why? (no more than 15 words)

Every year, climate change is making the planet hotter. When humans cut down trees or burn coal, oil, and gas to produce electricity, CO₂ and other harmful greenhouse gases(温室气体) go into the atmosphere(大气层). These gases take in the sun's heat, causing the earth to warm up. The heat causes terrible weather around the world, including heatwaves, floods and huge storms. 

One way of keeping the planet cool is to stop the greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. 

Some animals are natural-born climate change fighters. All animals are important, but a few hero animals protect their homes and keep them healthy, while going about their daily lives. Just by being themselves, these clever animals can prevent the planet from getting too hot. Let's meet them. 

Tapirs(貘), rainforest regenerators

Imagine if you pulled a pig's nose to make it longer but stopped before it got as long as an elephant's trunk. That's what a tapir looks like. These strange animals can grow as big as, or even bigger than, an adult lion. Tapirs have a secret superpower, too— their poo(大便). Tapirs' poo spreads seeds(种子) across the forest, helping lots of new plants grow so that the forests can spring back to life more quickly. 

Sea otters(海獭), protectors of the kelp(海藻) forest

Kelp grows in huge underwater forests. Like forests on land, k elp provides a wonderful, safe home for lots of animals, including sea otters. It also takes in and stores lots of carbon(碳). The sea urchins(海胆) love to tease kelp, and sea otters love to eat the urchins. When an otter uses its stomach like a dinner table to snack on urchins, it's not only supercute, it's actually helping to protect the k elp and create healthy, lively underwater forests. 

Although experts cannot agree on everything, studies show that the ancestors of the modern guitar first appeared in history several thousand years ago. The oldest guitar-like instrument that has been found and saved belonged to an officer in Egypt. This instrument had three strings(弦) and was made of beautifully polished wood. A century later, Hittite craftsmen(工匠) made stone model showing a man playing an instrument like a guitar. 

As people began to move to new areas and spread their culture, guitar instruments moved, too. Each new people group changed the design to best fit their own musical sounds. The number of strings changed, and the material used to make the instrument changed, too. People of ancient Africa, the Middle East, and Greece all played stringed instruments. The North African Moors played the oud and brought it to Spain around AD 700. There, it probably mixed with the Greek kithara and the Middle Eastern tanbur. Out of this mix came the Spanish guitarra. 

Names for the different stringed instruments all finally centered around the Persian word"tar", which means"string". However, the modern guitar really began to take shape around the 19th century. Torres, a Spanish guitar maker, improved it so much that his design had remained almost unchanged until today. 

European immigrants(移民) brought Torres's design to America, where it became popular. In fact, the guitar plays an important part in what many people consider true American music: blues, jazz, and rock and roll. The 20th century brought electric guitars and new ways of using the guitar in music. Today, the instrument remains one of the most popular in the world. 

David was a little boy with messy brown hair and old clothes. I had often wondered what kind of home life David had and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so improperly for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David special. He was always happy to help and not a day passed that David didn't stay after school to straighten chairs and clean the desks. We never talked much, he would just simply smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly head for home. 

Weeks passed and the excitement over the coming Christmas grew stronger and stronger until the last day of school before the holiday break. When the final bell rang, the anxious(急切的) children rushed out of the door. I smiled in relief as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around, I saw David quietly standing by my desk. 

"I have something for you, Ms Miller, " he said and pulled from behind his back a small box wrapped(包装) in old paper. Handing it to me, he said anxiously, "Please open it. " I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. To my surprise, I saw nothing. I looked at David's smiling face and back into the empty box and said, "The box is nice, David, but it's empty. "

"Oh, no, it isn't, " said David. "It's full of love. My mom told me before she died that love was something you couldn't see or touch unless you know it's there. . . can you see it?"

Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the proud dirty face that I had given little attention to. "Yes, David, I can see it, " I replied. "Thank you. " I could say that with the passing years, I never forgot the meaning behind the little empty box that sat on my desk.
