Saving electricity and water is important in our daily life. There are many little things we can do to help save the earth. They are small, but if everyone does the same thing, we will make a great difference. Here are some things we can do.

First, we can keep our windows and doors closed in winter to make our house warm. While in summer, we can keep them open. The wind can help us feel cool. Also, always remember to turn off the lights when we get out of the room. In these ways, we can save both electricity and money.

Second, we can do something to save water. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Also, after we wash vegetables and clothes, we can use the water to clean the floor. And it is better for us to take a shower than a bath. These will help save water.

In a word, protecting the environment doesn't need to do too many great things. We can start by just making some small changes at home. Besides saving electricity and water, there are many other things we can do to help save our earth.

Mandy is 12 years old. She just joined a volunteer club a week ago. Some people are sharing their experiences of being a volunteer. Let's have a look.

Judy is 22 years old. She began to be a volunteer four years ago. She loves children. So she teaches them music in an after-class study program (项目). All of them are lovely children and some of them do really well in music.

So Mandy is going to volunteer in the Green Park this weekend. She will hand out (分发) maps to the visitors and show the way to the park to them. She hopes it will be a great experience.

Know the goals

Make sure everyone understands the goal of the project. If you're doing a class project, you need to check the teacher's instructions carefully and ask questions whenever something is unclear. There's a popular saying: If you don't know where you're going, you probably won't get there.

Assign (指派) roles

Everyone should have a role in the team. For example, there should be a leader who helps everyone make decisions. There might be a note-taker who writes down the team's ideas during meetings, and a time-keeper to control the time. There might also be a fact-checker or a group speaker.

Divide the work

For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn't always do the same task. It's good to try new things, even if they're difficult!

Make a plan

After you divide the work, write down a plan on paper. You can use a calendar (日历) to help you. List all the tasks and think about when each one must be finished. It's important for everyone to follow the plan. And if you can't finish your part on time, tell the others as soon as possible.

Try to be positive (积极的). Everything is easier when you're enjoying yourself in the team.

Most people sometimes can't find the right way when they get to a new place. It is important to prepare well before you go. You can buy a map or read an e-map online before you take a trip. It will help you a lot when you can't find your way.

When you are in a new place, you can remember the landmarks (地标) near your hotel, like banks, cinemas and shops.

When you can't find your way, you can ask others the way to those places. Don't be too shy (害羞的) to speak to others. People are always friendly and kind. And they will tell you how to get there.

If no one can help you, you can take a taxi. All the drivers know the city well. They will take you to any place that you want to go to.

What can you do if you are lost in a forest? Don't worry. Watch the sun. Remember that the sun moves from the east to the west. You can also find and walk along it. Then you can get out of the forest.

It is easier to agree than to disagree. The following tips can help people solve disputes.

Don't make it personal.

If you get upset, it can help to remember that you' re mad at the person's idea, not the person.

Never criticize (批评) the others' ideas.

You' d better not say "That's a stupid idea", try "I don't really agree, and here is why." Never shout loudly and you will have a much better chance of getting your idea across.

Use "I" statements (陈述) to communicate how you feel and what you think.

Using "you" statements can sound argumentative (争论的). For example, telling your mum "You always remind me about my chores when I have a lot of homework" has a very different tone (语气) from "I'm under pressure because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?".

Listen to the other point of view.

When the other person is talking, try to stop thinking about why you disagree or what you will say next. Instead, focus on what is being said. When it is your turn to talk, repeat any key points the other person made to show you have paid attention to what was said. Then express why you disagree.

Stay calm.

This is the most important thing you can do to make a conversation go on well.

Have you ever imagined what bees can do with their tiny brains? Now scientists are looking into a bee's brain.

Clint Perry, a scientist, has spent much time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. "The main difficulty is to design (设计) an experiment for bees and get what we want," he says. "With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But we can't use the same way to get an answer from bees. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar."

The fact that bees like sugar is helpful for scientists to design experiments. For example, in one experiment, Perry gave bees a task: to find delicious sugar on a landing place above a black bar (棒). Perry made the task easier or harder by moving the landing place farther from or closer to the black bar. He found that bees would avoid the task when it was difficult. And when the task was easy, bees would try it.

As for humans, we might choose not to take a test when we aren't ready for it. And we might choose to take the test when we are well prepared. In the same way, bees seemed to make decisions like humans.

Perry points out that we are not sure whether bees actually make a thoughtful choice from experiments. Now scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. But learning more about how bees' brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.

One day when he was leaving his apartment, Mr. Black saw that his rubbish was gone. In its place, he found a note from David. "Good morning, Mr. Black. I saw your rubbish here, and since I was on my way out, I picked it up for you. Have a nice day, David." However, Mr. Black decided to ignore this act of kindness. He began thinking about the terrible traffic he would surely have to deal with on his way to work.

After a few weeks, Mr. Black was always happy to see the couple in the hall. They even started calling him Adam. Later on, they invited Mr. Black into their apartment for a cup of coffee. Mr. Black was very glad that they treated him nicely. He was so upset about it that he had been impolite to everyone he knew. He realized that he should try to do the same with the people he met.

"Don't go across the pond today, children," she said, as she kissed them goodbye one morning. "It is beginning to thaw (融化)."

"All right, mother," said Harry, not very happy, for he liked running and sliding (滑行) on the ice very much.

When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe.

"There," Harry said to his sister, "let's slide over it."

"But you promised mother," said Annie.

"No, I didn't, I only said ‘All right', and it is all right."

"I didn't say anything, so I can do what I like," said Annie.

So they got on the ice and started to go across the pond.

They had not gone far before the ice got broken, and suddenly they fell into the water. Luckily, a man who was at work near the pond heard the children's cries. He rushed into the water and saved them successfully.

They went home almost frozen and learned a lesson they would remember for a lifetime.

Do you know about the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain? It is quite interesting popular among kids. I liked it when I read it for the (one) time. Even if I'm adult now, it's still one of my favorites. After re-reading it (recent), I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.

In our daily lives, we often need to do some boring or tiring (task). What will be in your mind when your mother (ask) you to do some chores? Have you ever wanted to complain (抱怨)? I think most people have.

Tom Sawyer, however, (have) a different thought. One day, Aunt Polly told Tom (paint) the fence (篱笆). Tom (do) his job, when his friend Ben Rogers happened to pass by. Instead complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt"excited" about the task. Tom's words made Ben (interest) in the task. He even gave his apple Tom so that he could have a chance to paint the fence.

This story teaches (I) a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you (give) a boring or tiring task, don't complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely (不太可能) that someone (come) and do the work for you. So, don't complain, and you'll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!
