"Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two." Chase counted his new year gifts again.

"Do you have a gift for everyone in your 1?" Mom asked.

"Yep!" Chase said. "I'm ready for the class party tomorrow!"

When Chase got to school the next day, he was surprised to see a 2 girl in his classroom. "This is Eva." said Ms. Robins. "Will someone show her around today?" Chase put up his hand 3 he liked showing new kids around and helping them feel welcome.

After a while, Chase found he didn't have a 4 for Eva. Nobody else would have one for her either. He felt 5 about that. At a break, he was careful not to mention the 6 as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still 7 what would happen at the party. Chase suddenly remembered that kids often prepared candy hearts as the new year gifts. An idea jumped into his mind. He told it to the kids around him 8. Everyone nodded and agreed to give Eva a surprise.

When they were back in the classroom after lunch, the classmates cheered aloud, "It's time for our New Year's party!" One by one, they walked to Eva's desk. Each 9 her a candy heart with a smile. Later, Chase handed Eva the last gift- the robot-shaped eraser from his own bag. "Eva, everybody wanted 10 to feel included." he said.

Eva held all her gifts carefully. "This is the best New Year's party ever!"

Jeremy Owen is a scientist and he works in a science lab. We did an interview to know more about him and his job.

Interviewer: How long have you been working here, Dr. Owen?

Jeremy Owen: For about nineteen years.

Interviewer: Wow!

Jeremy Owen: When I was very young, my dad was always telling me interesting facts about the moon, the planets, outer space and that kind of thing.

Interviewer: What do you like best about the job?

Jeremy Owen: That's my favourite part.

Interviewer:

Jeremy Owen: Yes! It is like asking nature questions. It takes a lot of hard work, and you have to keep going when you want to discover something new.

Interviewer: What does your work in the lab include?

Jeremy Owen: Our lab studies medicine as well as bacteria (细菌).

Interviewer: Many students dream of being a scientist. What is your advice for them?

Jeremy Owen: The easiest things to learn are the ones that you are interested in. Another piece of advice is, don't believe everything you read or hear. You need to find out what is really going on!

Just when Naomi thought things couldn't get any worse, a girl came up to her and said, "You're new here, aren't you?"

"Yeah," Naomi answered, "I am."

"I didn't think I knew you when I saw you in math class before. I'm Emily, by the way."

"I'm Naomi," Naomi said. This girl was actually talking to her! After keeping quiet for a moment, Naomi invited Emily to sit down.

Emily sat down and then continued, "I saw you in the hall just now, too. Was that your mom with you?"

Naomi, unable to say anything, just nodded with embarrassment.

"You're so lucky," Emily said. "My mom doesn't even live with me. I haven't talked to her for a long time."

Suddenly everything seemed different to Naomi. Not see your mom every day? Not have her there when you get home from school? That would be even more terrible than feeling embarrassed in public. "I'm sorry," Naomi finally said quietly, realizing staying with mom is more important than what mom looks like.

The two girls talked a lot. On their way to the next class, Naomi promised Emily she would meet her again tomorrow. And she promised herself she would say sorry to her mom later, too.

Dear Mom and Dad,

You have no idea what a busy week I'm having at Space Camp! Our timetable is full, but what we're doing is great fun! We get up at 7:00 in the morning and have breakfast, and then it's time for our daily report. We work in teams, and each team has a task to finish every day. Our team is making a two-stage rocket, and we're hoping it will fly into the sky. After our daily report and some work with the team, it's time for lunch.

When lunch is over, we do some other activities. Yesterday, I tried out the one-sixteenth Gravity (重力) Chair! It's a great chair! It makes you feel you were on the moon. Tomorrow, I want to try the Manned Maneuvering Unit-in that special room we will work without any friction (摩擦). I hope I'll also get to experience the Five Degrees of Freedom Chair-—they call it the 5DF. That's a special kind of chair. It moves you back and forth-even upside down! We do other kinds of things, too. For example, the training center has a rock climber and a climbing trainer. There's a pool, too, and we do water activities there. It's a good thing that I brought my swimsuit!

I'm really having a good time. I'm so glad I came, even though I was a little nervous at first. But I miss you, and I'll be glad to go home, too. The Space Camp leavers' party will be on Friday afternoon—you'll be there, right? I want you to meet some of my friends and see the planetarium (天文馆) and the museum.

It's almost time for "lights out." I'll call you on Thursday morning.

Do you have any old crayons at home? Mr. King needs them! Drop the crayons in the box near the art room.

Bring back the books! Mrs. Nolen says many students need to bring back school library books. She has sent out notes about the missing books.
