Peers are people who are about the same age as you. Peer pressure is when one or more peers make you feel pressured to do something, you feel you have to do that thing, because one or more of your peers are doing it, or are trying to convince(说服) you to do it. There are two different kinds of peer pressure.

Positive peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something good. You might do something that is good for you, good for others, or good for the environment. Negative or bad peer pressure is when you feel pressured to do something you shouldn't do. For example, it might be something that goes against rules, dangerous or bad for your health. It might also be something that goes against your values.

If a friend tries to pressure you to do something, you might feel you should do it to please your friend. You might even feel that the person will not be your friend if you do not do it. People often want to fit in with their peers and don't feel they may stand out because they are different in some way. Sometimes people are afraid others will make fun of them if they do not do what everyone else is doing.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you feel peer pressure to do something:

—Could I get into trouble for doing this?—Could I hurt myself or another person while doing this?

—Does this go against my values? —Will I feel ashamed if my family or others find out about it?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you are feeling negative peer pressure. Say, "I do not want to do that. " Then walk away and feel proud that you made a good decision.

(1)、Which is an example of peer pressure according to the text?
A、Bob has a famous T-shirt and you also want to buy one. B、Jenny never cares about what her friends are doing. C、I always make up my mind to do what I like doing. D、My brother often helps his classmates at school.
(2)、Positive peer pressure happens ____ in the text.
A、when you do something that goes against your values B、when you want to volunteer to help others C、when you get into trouble for doing this D、when you hurt yourself or hurt others' feelings
(3)、What's the main idea of the third paragraph?
A、Where peer pressure takes place. B、What peer pressure can bring. C、Which is peer pressure. D、Why peer pressure often works.

On 3rd September, 2025, there was a big celebration in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. As the celebration drew to a close, 80,000 balloons flew into the sky and formed a fantastic "rainbow".

As one of the technical (技术性的) guides for the balloon show, 36-year-old Ou Xianghong from Changde, Hunan Province, found her eyes filled with tears when she saw the show.

All the colourful balloons were environmentally friendly. They were filled with high-purity helium (高纯度氦气)."Each balloon had to be exactly the same size to make sure the show was perfect," Ou said.

Following the plan for celebration, hundreds of students needed to start inflating (充气) the balloons at 4:00 a.m. on 3rd September. They had only an hour and a half to finish the task (任务). From the moment Ou became the guide, she made several trips to Beijing to teach the students. Along with other guides, she gave them clear instructions. The students improved a lot. At first, it took them over 10 seconds to inflate a balloon and another 5 seconds to tie it. After practising again and again, the students finally finished the task in 70 minutes, 20 minutes earlier than planned.

Katie is part of a programme (计划). It teaches young people how to be pilots (飞行员). Another student, Evie Nesselrode, is also in the programme. Although they go to different schools, they learn to fly together. They become good friends and form strong relationship.

In this programme, Katie and Evie learn about many subjects like physics (物理学) and maths. Maths is really important for pilots! They use it to figure out (弄懂) how heavy the plane is, how fast it is flying, and how long it will take to land. They learn these things to make sure every flight is safe. Katie and Evie never get tired learning them. In fact, they enjoy it so much when they see and feel their own (improve). They find they become even (organize) than before.

Katie and Evie don't just study in the classroom. They also practise flying real planes in the air. After flying for 30 hours with a teacher, they will be able (fly) on their own.

  • 7、Steaming is one of the oldest and healthiest ways to cook food. People have steamed food for thousands of years, using simple pots. Today, it's still very popular all over the world.

You put a little water in a pot and bring it to a boil (around 100℃). The boiling water makes steam—hot water vapour (蒸气). You place the food over the water, not in it, on a special plate or basket with holes (孔). The steam rises and cooks the food softly. A tight lid (紧密的盖子) keeps the steam inside the pot.

Why is steaming good? It's easy for beginners. Next, steaming needs no oil or fat, so food is lower in calories (卡路里). It also keeps more nutrients (营养成分) inside vegetables compared to boiling them in water. Also, the steam cooks food softly. Boiling or frying can make them hard or dry. More importantly, steaming lets the food's delicious flavour come through.

What can you steam? Almost anything! Like vegetables, fish and seafood, dumplings, chicken, rice, and so on.

It makes food tasty while keeping all the good nutrients inside. Next time you cook vegetables or fish, try steaming!

    A. How does steaming work?

    B. Why don't you choose to boil or fry?

    C. This is perfect for some foods like fish or eggs.

    D. Steaming is a fast, healthy, and clean way of cooking.

    E. First, you only need a pot, a little water, and a steamer basket.

  • 8、Do you ever wish your pet could talk? Well, some animals on the Internet are doing just that. With the help of their owners, a lot of training, and some special buttons (按钮), pets are learning to "talk" in their own ways.

A popular pet right now is Merlin, an 8-month-old mini pig. People call him "the world's smartest pig". His owner, Mina Alali, put videos of him using buttons to communicate online. Each button has a different word, like "walk" or "food". Merlin presses (按) them to let Mina know what he wants.

Merlin isn't the only pet to learn this cool skill! Some pet dogs, cats, horses, monkeys and even parrots have all been doing the same. Bunny the Talking Dog is another star online with over 8 million followers! She can use over 50 buttons to make sentences and ask questions, though it sometimes takes her owner a while to understand what she means. However, for a pet, it's still amazing!

So, how do you teach a pet to "talk"?

First, get some buttons you can record your voice on. Then, use words your pet hears often, like "treat", "walk", or "play". Say the words clearly many times before you press the buttons. For example, "Want a TREAT? Let's get a TREAT!" Next, put the buttons in a quiet, easy-to-reach place. At last, teach your pet to press it with a paw (爪) or nose. Reward (奖励) them by giving them a real treat when they try!

It takes a lot of time and patience (耐心), and not every pet will be able to learn to do it. But that's okay. Even without buttons, your pets can show their love to you in their own special ways!

(1)、Why does the writer talk about Merlin and Bunny?

  • 9、In 2017, a famous painting called A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains was on show at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This 900-year-old artwork attracted (吸引) lots of people. Among them was Gui Haowen, then a 16-year-old high school student.

Gui took some photos with her phone, but they didn't show the painting's beauty well. This made her want to learn more about photography and start taking pictures of cultural relics (文物).

However, taking photos in museums isn't easy. Museums don't let visitors use flash or tripods (闪光灯或三脚架), and the lights are often not very bright. "Taking a clear photo in thoseconditions is difficult," Gui said. But she didn't give up. She tried to be creative. For example, when she took a photo of a silver bowl, she used the shadows (阴影) to make it look like an ink painting.

Gui didn't just take photos. She also studied the history of cultural relics. By understanding their stories, she could take better photos of them. Gui visited around 60 museums and took countless pictures. Whenever she travelled to a new city, a trip to the museum was always at the top of her list.
