"Hometown" is a word full of warmth and beauty. How would you show your love for your hometown? At the final of a national English-speaking competition, contestants from all, over China shared their own stories. 

Wang Siqi from Nanjing International School, Jiangsu, talked about her hometown Nanjing. "I used to live in the US, and my parents kept telling me everything about Nanjing. When I came back at age 9, I felt even closer to this city. Tasting its foods and hanging around in its universities, I was like a child who had missed her mom for too long, " said Wang. "The competition gave me a great chance to show my love for Nanjing. "

Lan Yunjie, 15, from Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School, tried to change people's stereotypes (刻板印象) about his hometown, Shanghai. "When talking about Shanghai, many people would think of words like ‘fast-paced (快节奏的)' and ‘indifferent (冷漠的)', but in fact, it's a city full of kindness. I want to show others a different side of Shanghai, so I told stories of how people helped each other during Shanghai's lockdown, " said Lan. "I believe this is the power of public speaking," Lan added. "By using logic and emotion, you can better share your opinions, promoting (增进) understanding and removing prejudice (消除偏见)."

Yang Zihan, 14, born in Hong Kong, she mainly lives in Shenzhen. "Unlike other people who are so familiar with their hometown, my hometown is a ‘stranger' to me. But thanks to the competition, I did a lot of research about Hong Kong and found out about its sad colonial (殖民地的) history and the local people's brave fight. That spirit of patriotism has become the most valuable thing my hometown gives to me, and I'm glad to share it with everyone," said Yang.

About 500 years ago in China, there was a cool traveler. He spent 30 years traveling across China. He was Xu Xiake.

Xu Xiake was born in Jiangsu Province. When he was a child, Xu enjoyed reading books about Chinese mountains and rivers. He decided to see them when he grew up.

At that time, many kids were studying hard to become officials (官员). But Xu's father never made him take exams. Instead, he encouraged his son to go out and get to know the world. Xu began his journey when he was about 20. Before he left, his mother made him a traveling hat to encourage him to travel.

Xu traveled to 21 provinces and over 100 cities in China. He climbed thousands of mountains and visited over 350 caves. He was the first person to find the highest peak (山峰) of Huangshan Mountain. He was also the first to find lots of karst caves (喀斯特溶洞). What's more, he found the Yangtze River's headwater(源头). Xu traveled mostly on foot. He slept and ate in the nature. Sometimes he fell into rivers or ran into dangerous animals. But Xu was brave and enjoyed his journey.

Xu kept a diary while traveling but it was not printed until his death— Travel Diaries of XuXiake. The book is still popular today. Being an adventurer can be very exciting. But it also takes bravery and skills. Do you want to be an adventurer?

Would you want to go to school in a national park? What if the park was the hottest, driest and lowest place in the country? What if it was called Death Valley (死亡谷) ? 

Death Valley National Park is a desert valley which is beautiful but difficult to live in. For five months a year, temperatures can be over 48℃, but it is cold at night. About 500 people live in Death Valley, and some work in the park. Many of the people are families with young children. 

There was once a Death Valley Primary School. It was on Old Ghost Road. To some people, the school's name is scary. But it was in fact a happy place. The building has two rooms, and there were only several students. Most of the students were small children, and the oldest students was in 4th grade. One teacher and one aid (助理) worked with all of the students.     ▲  , because each student could get a lot of attention and care.

I live in Delhi, India. It is a very old and fantastic city with a history of more than 2,000 years. It is also a very large city with 1 parts— Old Delhi and New Delhi.

Delhi is a big business (商业) center. There are lots of stores and supermarkets. And a lot of 2 from all over the world come here to do business. Delhi is also a(n) 3 center. There are many great schools with quite a few students studying there.
