Last spring, our science teacher gave each of us a small, unlabeled seed. "Your task," he said, "is to plant it, care for it, and keep a weekly journal. You won't know what it is until it grows."
I was not very patient back then. I put my seed in a pot (花盆) , watered it heavily on the first day, and expected to see something green the next morning. Of course, nothing happened. I felt 1 and almost forgot about it.
A week later, while cleaning my desk, I noticed the pot again. To my surprise, a tiny green shoot had broken through the soil. I felt a sudden sense of responsibility. I began to 2 the instructions: watering it regularly, making sure it got enough sunlight, and writing down every small change in my journal.
3 the plant grew, so did my patience. I learned that growth couldn't be rushed. Some weeks, there was almost no visible change. My classmate, Leo, had a plant that grew much faster than mine. At first, I was a bit 4 . But then I realized we probably had different seeds. It wasn't a competition; it was a personal journey of discovery.
The most exciting 5 came two months later. A beautiful orange flower bloomed on my plant. It was a marigold! The flower was not particularly rare or big, but to me, it was the most 6 sight in the world because I had grown it myself.
This project taught me more than just botany. It taught me about the 7 of patience, care, and consistent effort. I learned to appreciate the small, slow steps that lead to big results. Now, when I face a difficult task, I remember my marigold. I remind myself to 8 , trust the process, and keep putting in the work, even when I don't see immediate results.
Sometimes, the best lessons in life come 9 the simplest things— like a single seed. It taught me that with time and care, even the smallest beginning can grow into something 10 .

Dear People of 2025,
I'm writing to you from 2125 to warn you of the results of over-dependence on AI. Over the past 100 years, people have become increasingly dependent on AI. At first, it was an (惊人的,极好的) helper—life appeared easier with AI by one's side. Slowly, humans stopped having their own ideas. (代替,而不是), they just let AI make all their choices, even those about their health, relationships, and jobs. However, people didn't (了解,意识到) the fact that sometimes AI also made mistakes (直到……为止) it was too late. Many lost control of their own lives, and even worse, some came to trust AI more than they trusted (他们自己).
I'm not suggesting you avoid using AI. The point is you must use AI as your helper (合适地,正确地), not your replacement. Ask AI questions, check the information it creates, and always make your own (决定). The more you depend on your own thinking and judgment, the better prepared you'll be for a future where AI is (到处,处处). Just remember: critical thinking, creativity, and understanding are human strong points that can never be (替换,取代) by AI. So make sure you always use and trust these human abilities first.
Sincerely,
Jill, a person from 2125

17 September 2023
Dear diary,
I was just reading my diary from 4 years ago. How time flies! Back then, I was so 5 at being too short and failing to get on the basketball team. I couldn't help laughing at my heartbreaking words then. Basketball was really a big 6 for me. But things changed soon after that.
I was so hurt by my 7 back then, and my friends were all worried. "Why not try something else, like 8 or skiing?" suggested my best friend. At first, I swam just to take my mind off things. 9 , to my surprise, I fell deeply in love with the sport. I've won several competitions now and I've made a lot of friends. My life has taken a different turn. It's great to look back and see my 10 and gains with fresh eyes. Growing up will never be a(an)11 thing. But we need to look at difficulties the right way.
Now I 12 understand that failure is a part of life. It may fall upon us at any stage in our lives. I have also 13 many other terrible moments since then. But I have 14 felt so bad again. I know clearly that failure 15 just a moment. When one door closes, another opens. Life is waiting for us with many other surprises.
Tomorrow is another day.

Everyone loves to hear a good joke. Here are a few tips to help you be the life of the party!
Tell your jokes to as many people as you can, or even to the cat before you can tell them well.
Know your jokes!
Nothing is worse than leaving out an important part, or forgetting the punchlines (关键句).
Be confident!

Less is more!
Leave out unnecessary information. You don't need to explain things.

Since the beginning of time, people have had illnesses and doctors have tried to treat them. In the days when people knew very little about medicine, some very strange and terrible treatments were tried. Here are some of the worst.
1 Toothache
Ancient Egyptians who had toothache didn't use to go to the dentist (牙医) because there weren't any dentists in those days. So they used to find a dead mouse and put it in their mouth. They left it there for a few hours. Did it take the toothache away? Who knows? But aren't you happy that there's a dentist near you?
2 Backache
Backache is no fun at all—people who suffer from it have a lot of pain. Sometimes it's because a bone in the back is out of position—that is, not in the place where it should be. In ancient Greece, doctors used to treat backache like this: they tied the patient to a ladder, pulled the ladder up high and then let it fall to the ground. Bang! The vertebra (脊椎) went back into place. Well, that was the idea, but this "treatment" probably just made the backache worse!
3 Baldness
OK, it's not really a disease at all. But men whose hair is falling out are never happy about it, are they? The ancient Egyptians had a way. What did they use to do? They took the fat of a lion, a hippopotamus (河马), a cat and a snake, mixed them together—and then rubbed the mixture into the man's head. Maybe it stopped baldness, maybe not—but the man's head certainly didn't smell too good after that!
4 Scrofula
The Middle Ages was a time when there was a common skin (皮肤) disease called scrofula. (We won't go into the details, OK?) People who had scrofula could easily stop it—they just had to get the king or queen to touch them! (The question is: why would a king or queen want to touch a person who had a skin disease?)
(1)、How did ancient Egyptians deal with a toothache?A、They went to the dentist at once. B、They put a dead mouse in their mouth. C、They rubbed animal fat on their teeth. D、They asked the king to touch their teeth.(2)、In which sentence is "out of position" used in the same way?A、As a shy person, I felt out of position being the team leader. B、The main printer is out of position. Please use the one in the library. C、His joke about the serious topic was out of position and made everyone quiet. D、The X-ray showed one tooth was out of position, so I need to have it fixed.(3)、Which picture is the way to treat baldness?A、
B、
C、
D、

15、 请阅读下面的短文,并从下列方框里的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。
A. However, too much stress can have a negative effect.
B. This simple method can help calm you down quickly.
C. For example, you could try listening to music to relax.
D. First, try preparing in an environment similar to the test.
E. It mainly includes three steps: learning, saving, and recalling.
F. The answer lies in the relationship between stress and memory.
When you see the word "ataraxia" in a test, does your mind go empty? You've seen it before, but you can't recall(想起) it. Why does this happen?
Let's understand how memory works first. Interestingly, a little stress can help with the first two steps. When you feel a bit stressed, your body produces some stress hormones(荷尔蒙). These help your brain save memories better.
When you feel very stressed during a test, your brain acts like it's in-danger. As a result, the thinking part of your brain slows down. This makes it hard for you to recall things.
So what can you do to turn stress to your advantage? This way, you will feel more relaxed during the real test. Then, make you feel less worried by doing exercise. Exercise also improves sleep, which is important before a test. Moreover, take deep breaths on the actual test day.
Next time you find your mind empty, take a few deep breaths. With a clearer mind, you may soon remember that "ataraxia" means a state of calmness.
