Born in 1922, Yang showed a(n)1 talent for science at a young age. He could quickly understand difficult science books that even some older students found hard. In 1938, he2 Southwest Associated University and studied hard there. His solid education3 his future success.

In 1957, Yang won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This4 made him the first Chinese to get this high honor. His discovery changed people's understanding of physics greatly.

Though living abroad for years, Yang always cared about his home country. In 1971, he returned to China and5 a bridge for scientific exchanges between China and the US. He also6 advised China to pay more attention to basic science——this advice helped China develop science faster later.

In 1999, Yang joined Tsinghua University as a professor. Even in his 80s, he still taught students carefully and tried to7 a new generation of researchers. He often shared his experience to help them solve problems. His8 devotion to science and country won people's deep respect. Many young scientists look up to him because of this.

In 2021, Yang donated over 2,000 valuable9 to Tsinghua University, including his old books and research manuscripts. These things help people learn more about his life and work.

The Yellow River Delta (三角洲), formed by vast amounts of mud and sand carried by the river, gave rise to Dongying, a city in East China's Shandong Province.

Situated at the river's mouth where it meets the Bohai Sea, Dongying has over 4,567 square kilometers of wetlands, c 41.6 percent of its area. The city is k as one of the world's first International Wetland Cities, and the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The reserve h 1,633 animals and 685 plants. More than 200 migratory birds visit every year for breeding (繁殖), wintering, or rest. The best birdwatching s runs from October to April, when tens of thousands of birds fill the sky a the estuary (河口), forming shapes that resemble (类似) a giant whale or drifting clouds.

This year's birdwatching season began on Nov 15. Shahbaz Khan, director of UNESCO's Regional Office for East Asia, believes the reserve sets a good e of international cooperation in protecting nature.

However, the reserve used to be quite d in the past. In local people's m, the reserve was once saline-alkaline land (盐碱地), with wild grasses and sand f the air. Over the years, Dongying has been working on wetland protection and restoration (修复), making it China's largest new coastal wetland zone.

Even within the city, wildlife is alive and well. A crested ibis (朱鹮), a nationally protected bird, has made Mingtan Park its home since October 2024. A Dongying is a major crude oil (原油) production center, the city still shows that its development can coexist (共生) with nature.

Here, modern buildings and flocks of birds share the skyline—a new vision of a city that becomes part of nature itself.

  • 4、阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容,在文章后小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,注意:每个空格只填1个单词

Have you ever stopped to look closely at moss (苔藓) on a stone or a giant redwood reaching for the sky? Our planet is full of amazing living things, from the fastest cheetah (猎豹) to the tiniest ant. But these plants and animals don't live alone. They depend on each other in a web of life called an ecosystem.

Every living thing plays a role in this network. For example, bees and butterflies are very important for pollination (传粉). They carry pollen (花粉) from flower to flower. If there is no such action, many plants couldn't make fruits or seeds. Bees also communicate to find food and store sweet honey in their honeycomb (蜂巢).

Other small living things, like mushrooms, help to break down dead plants and animals, cleaning the forest and making the soil rich. This process removes decaying (腐烂的) things and creates nutrient-rich food for living plants. This amazing cycle shows how everything in nature is connected— even death gives life to new growth.

Sadly, sometimes these connections are broken by human activities. When we cut down too many trees like bamboo or ginkgo, animals lose their homes. Forests, which once offered the living space to many frogs and butterflies, have fallen silent.

Protecting nature means protecting ourselves in the long run. We can start small— plant trees or grow flowers like roses. When we understand we are also part of the ecosystem, we can learn to live in harmony with nature. Every effort we make today, whether big or small, will help build a better future for the natural world.

How do humans influence an ecosystem?

    What can we do?

  • 19、The United Nations decided that 2025 is the year of glacier protection. It set March 21, 2025 as the first World Day for Glaciers. This event encouraged people to save glaciers.

    What are glaciers?

You can imagine glaciers as slowly-moving ice and snow on land. Over time, the snow adds up and turns into glacier ice. Glaciers have shaped mountains over the earth's history. They are still moving and changing land in many places today.

Glaciers are not just needed for the land. When glaciers melt, the nutrients (养料) from the water are good for life in rivers and oceans. In some places, glaciers provide water for people and animals. Glaciers in the world cover 10% of the land. They also hold 70% of the earth's fresh water. In areas like the Himalayas, many people need glacier water to live. This water fills big rivers, such as the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra.

    Why are glaciers disappearing (消失)?

Climate change is leading to serious problems for glaciers. Many glaciers have disappeared. The atmosphere (大气层) around the earth is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and keeping most heat from getting out. This makes the earth warm enough for life. But when we burn wood and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide. Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere and causes it to keep in too much heat. As the earth's temperature is increasing, glaciers melt faster.

The influence (影响) of glaciers disappearing

If glaciers disappear, there will be less water for us to drink and farm, while floods may happen more often. Mountains with glaciers are home to special ecosystems and a large number of animals. As temperatures rise and glaciers melt, they are not fit for these living things.

The largest ocean — the Pacific Ocean

Where: It stretches from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, and between Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east.

How large: It covers more than 165 million square kilometers, which is larger than the total land area of the whole world.

What it is like: It has the deepest trench (海沟) on Earth — the Mariana Trench, which is about 11,000 meters deep. It is also home to thousands of kinds of sea animals and plants, many of which cannot be found in other oceans.

The highest waterfall — the Angel Falls

Where: It is in the rainforest of Venezuela, South America.

How high: It drops 979 meters from the top to the bottom, with a single drop of 807 meters. It is about 19 times as high as the Niagara Falls.

What it is like: The waterfall is hidden in the thick forest. Visitors usually need to take a plane or a boat to get a close look at its beauty. The water at the bottom turns into mist quickly because of the huge falling height.

    The largest island — Greenland

Where: It lies between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, to the northeast of Canada.

How large: It has an area of about 2.16 million square kilometers.

What it is like: Most of the island is covered with a thick ice sheet (冰盖), which is up to 3 kilometers thick in some places. Only a small part of the island's coast is fit for people to live in. The ice sheet is getting thinner year by year because of global warming.

The longest river system — the Amazon River

Where: It runs through South America, passing through nine countries including Brazil and Peru.

How long: The main river is about 6,400 kilometers long, and the whole system has more than 1,000 tributaries (支流).

What it is like: It carries more water than any other river in the world — more than the next seven largest rivers combined. Its basin (流域) is the world's largest tropical rainforest, which is like "the lungs of the Earth" because it produces a large amount of oxygen.
