The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to honour Qu Yuan, a famous poet who threw himself into a river sadly when he was unable to help his homeland. Zongzi is a special snack for this Chinese festival. Zhang told Hernandez stories about sea urchin zongzi-making traditions in Nan' ao and how the local zongzi gained popularity around the whole country. Hernandez followed Zhang's instructions step by step: picking leaves, preparing filling with sticky rice, peanuts and fresh sea urchins, wrapping filling in leaves and tying the zongzi with strings.
Hernandez said, "It shows that people care about the environment here and are remembering where they come from. I think it is important to show other people the culture and continue passing down the sea urchin zongzi cooking skills. People take a lot of pride in this."
Before saying goodbye, Zhang gave the American a box of sea urchin zongzi as a gift. "I was thinking about how to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with friends. Now I can share it with my friends," Hernandez said happily.
