The internet is just like a net, and it c us with the world. In the past, it was nearly impossible for people to communicate immediately with people in other countries. It would take a long time to reach their destinations (目的地), and not everyone could do that. But the internet has made the impossible possible. Now we can communicate with foreigners online.

Many of us want to keep thin and healthy.  Here are some new studies.

They show that sleeping may help lose weight,but eating less may not!  People without enough sleep are fatter, according to a study. The researchers found that there are three types of sleep time: short sleep, normal sleep, and long sleep. The study shows that, compared with normal sleepers, short sleepers have more fat on their bodies.

Dinner is important.  But scientists at Osaka University, Japan, said this might not be true. They did a study with 20,000 university students. They found that if people don't eat dinner,it's easier for them to put on weight. One reason might be that people without dinner are hungrier, so they eat more during the day.

Watching videos makes you eat more. If you want to lose weight, stop watching videos! In a study, scientists asked people to watch a television show. 

Ants have the ability to smell out cancerous cells (癌细胞) in humans,which has been found by a study, suggesting that they could be used to find the cancer in the future.Scientists from The French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) found that some ants have a good sense of smell. "But more tests must be carried out before they could be used in hospitals, "the team said.

The scientists did tests with 36 ants, smelling cells in the lab. First, they let the ants smell some cancerous human cells. Every time the ants smelt cancerous cells, they were rewarded with sugar solution (糖溶液). In the second step, the ants were put into two different smells. One was a new smell of healthy cells and the other was still the smell of the cancerous cells. Once the ants found the cancerous cells successfully, the researchers made them smell different cancerous cells. As such, the scientists found that ants could tell between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous cells.

This isn't the first time that scientists have used the animals' sense of smell to find cancerous cells." Dogs are good at finding something with their noses. However, training dogs to do so needs several months or a year. On the other hand, ants can be easily raised in a short time. They are inexpensive,and hundreds of them can be trained with fewer times," scientists pointed out.

Now a new and exciting invention allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality(AR, 增强现实技术) glasses and a smartphone, deaf people are also able to join in everyday conversations. 

The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had a Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-oldhearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles(字幕) crossed Scarfe's mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help. 

Scarfe got to work, working with Nreal, an ARglasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of ARglasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio(音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio and these subtitles then appear on the user's glasses screen. 

The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 13million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of millions of people. 

This is a great change for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, said, "As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so happy. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before. "

Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.  In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucei was officially recognized (官方认定) as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucei and why wasn't he known for his invention at the time?

Antonio Meucei was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucei started to do experiments with electricity.  When two places were connected with a wire(电线), people in those places could hear each other. 

In 1850, Meucci and his wife moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill.  To solve this problem, he connected metal cables between his home and his workshop. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently. 

Meucci asked a group of people to see his new invention. They listened happily as the voice of a singer was heard through the wires.  Even worse, Meucci didn't take out a patent on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him. 

In 2002, more than a century after Meuceci's death, his work was finally recognized by the government. 

What do you think of a "talking kitchen"? A French Digital Kitchen has been developed at Newcastle University in the UK. It teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time. For the first time, students can learn a language by following cooking steps. 

All grammar and      ▲   have been carefully chosen to make sure the users can understand French well. After learning for some time, the users can test themselves by doing a short test on the computer. 

The kitchen project was started by Professor Paul Seed house. He became interested in the idea after he visited another kind of talking kitchen. He said, "The purpose of the French Digital Kitchen is to make learning a language more interesting and more educational. "

How does the kitchen work? There is a computer in the kitchen. With this computer, the users can first choose a French recipe that they want to follow. Using information in the computer, the kitchen starts to "teach" the users how to make a French dish. If you follow the instructions on the computer, it moves on to the next. If you go wrong, the program goes back and repeats the recipe or information. At any time, the users can also ask the kitchen to repeat the recipe or any information. 

The new kitchen can be used in schools, universities and even people's homes. The researchers will also be developing the European Digital Kitchen, for the next three years. 

Electronic waste (电子垃圾), also known as "E-waste", is used to describe the waste from useless electronics such as computers, phones, fridges, washing machines, TVs and so on. Most of these electronics are not often rubbish, but just given up. In 2019, the world produced 53. 6 million tons of e-waste, and the world's e-waste will reach 74. 7 million tons by 2030. 

Last week, Guangming Research Centre made surveys among 1, 000 residents (居民) in Xingfu community. The surveys were mainly about different kinds of e-waste and how the residents deal with e-waste. The diagrams below show the results.

E-waste is the world's fastest-growing kind of waste, and only a small part of it is collected and recycled. Some residents think they should recycle e-waste, because e-waste includes many valuable metals, such as gold, silver and so on. They say they try to repair some electronics rather than buy new ones. They also give away their electronics which they don't like any more to people in need.
