The "Great Green Wall of China" project is over forty years old. In this project, people plant trees in Northern China. The reason is that trees can keep us healthy, just like doctors. So, we call them doctor trees. A study says that living around trees improves health and happiness. 

 So for people in large cities with air pollution (污染), trees can be more important. Cities are planting trees in city parks. And they are also planting trees along streets to help clean the air. 

Some scientists think that trees help more than just the air.  A study shows that people in hospital feel better when they can see trees from their rooms. People with trees near their homes usually exercise more. 

Scientists are also studying the healthy effect (作用) of trees on human minds. 

 After workers planted lots of trees there, people living there said the neighbourhood was nicer. They walked slower when going to work or going home. And they stayed on the street to talk more often with people who lived near them. It's easy to find that trees can make people happy and relaxed. Of course, another good effect is that doctor trees work for free!

What is good about planting trees in cities?

In the mountains of Fujian, China, there are special round or square buildings called tulou. The Hakka people (客家人) built them a long time ago. They moved from the north to the south for a better life, but they needed to be safe. So, they built strong tulou like castles (城堡), with high walls and only one door.

Each tulou is like a big family home. Up to 800 people can live inside When you go inside, you can hear children playing and smell food from the kitchens. The first floor has kitchens and dining rooms. The second floor is for storing things. The upper floors are bedrooms with wooden beds and furniture (家具).

On special days like the Spring Festival, families meet in the big open area in the middle. They hang red lanterns and dance. Old people tell stories about their family history. Tulou are not just houses— they help keep the Hakka traditions (传统) alive.

In 2008, tulou became a World Heritage site (世界遗产地). Now, many tourists visit them. People can look around, listen to stories, and even try making woodcut prints of tulou on red paper—a lucky symbol in China.

It's often said that animals are our friends. This story happened to Brantley Harrison and her family. Living in South Carolina, the Harrisons often take care of the injured (受伤的) animals and send them back into the wild when they feel better. 

One October, a rescue (救援) group found a 4-week-old injured squirrel (松鼠) and placed her with Brantley and her family. The Harrisons named the squirrel Bella. The little squirrel, with three other ones, all lived together in a little "house" outside Brantley's home. 

They stayed there until spring. In April of the next year, the Harrisons set the squirrels free. The other squirrels soon went back to nature, but Bella didn't because she wasn't ready to leave her human family. 

"Bella usually sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her," Brantley said. Her husband John often brought Bella food, as she was usually waiting by the door for him. Bella became a member of the family. 

They said goodbye, but Bella had other plans. She didn't leave the family and would not like to go very far into the wild. For eight years, she always visited them.

Do you like skiing? When it comes to skiing, we have to know about one man—Shan Zhaojian. He is famous as China's "father of skiing". In 1938, Shan was born in Tonghua, a city known for its ice and snow. In the 1950s, China began to develop winter sports in the northeastern areas, and Tonghua built the first cross-country ski team. Shan joined it when he was 16. "Things were really difficult at that time. We had no money to buy good skis, so we made them on our own. Even so, I kept practicing hard and believed we could do well," he said. From 1957 to 1960, Shan won 10 medals in different skiing games. 

Because of his poor health, Shan stopped skiing at the age of 24. But he didn't give up the winter sport. He worked as a ski coach to teach young people and also the head of the Chinese Ski Team. In 1998, Shan stopped his job as a coach and spent more time studying the history of skiing, giving talks and holding activities about ice and snow sports in schools across the country. "I hope to see more people join in ice and snow sports," he said.

There are many kinds of foods at the shop and they all look very nice. Amy finds the tomatoes and juice in a short time. She looks at the prices (价格) and reads, "Tomatoes are 7 yuan for 1kg and juice is 15 yuan for two bottles."

Mom asks, "How much are they?"

"51 yuan." answers Amy.

"Yes, Amy. Maths can be easy and it's helpful. It's part of our life," says Mom.

"I see. I'm happy to take an interesting maths class," says Amy.

First, before you start a reading club, you should think about "What will my reading club be like?" and "When and where will we meet?"

Then, ask your friends to come to your club. Find eight to twelve people around your age to join the club. You may ask your friends for help, and they can ask their friends to come. These people may be your new club members. You can make friends with them.

Next, having a topic (话题) can also help. The topic may interest (使……感兴趣) members to find more information about it. If you want to read stories about history, the topic "history" can make it easier (更容易) to know which books to read. If every member helps find a book to read each time, you can know more great new books and writers (作家).

Last, read the book before the meeting. And then come to the meeting with questions to talk about.

In a word, it's better to do than to say. Try to start a reading club now!

Chinese is difficult, but it's very useful. CIC and some schools in China are sister schools (友好学校). One of them is Beijing No. 4 High School. I have a pen friend from that school. His name is Liu Gang. Nick is his English name. His favourite subject is English. Some students think English is difficult because it is so different from Chinese. But for Liu Gang, it's easy and fun. There are many ways to learn English now, like reading English stories and watching English films. English also helps him learn about different cultures (文化).

Every year, some students of CIC can go to the sister schools. And the students can stay (待) there for four weeks. I want to go to China next year, and I want to meet my Chinese pen friend.

"Hi! You look lost. Can I help you?" Erica asks.

Nick smiles (微笑). "Yes, I can't find the dining hall. ▲"

"It's in the middle of the school. I'll show you!" Erica says.

As they walk to the dining hall, Erica starts talking, "I love the library. It's so quiet and there are many good books to read," she says. "There's also a large garden behind the science building. It's really beautiful."

Nick smiles. "I like reading too. And I love spending time in nature," he says.

"Really? We have the same hobbies!" Erica says happily.

They walk around the school, and Erica shows Nick other places she likes. Nick is happy to learn so much about the school, and they're friends now.

At night, Jim tells his grandparents about the day. He says they have a good time there.
