US mathematician Dan Meyer believes that a cart full of items doesn't tell the whole story. "Every person needs a fixed amount of time to say hello, pay, say goodbye and leave," he said. And that amount of time is about 41 seconds per person.

Each item in the cart only takes 3 seconds.

This means if there are five people ahead of you, each with 10 items in their carts, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person ahead of you, with 50 items in the cart, the waiting time is 191 seconds. You do the math.

It's important to know who the customers are. For example, if they are elderly people, they are more likely to move slower.

The items in their carts are also important. For example, four bottles of the same milk will go faster than four different items.

According to US science writer Robert Samuel, around 90 percent of people are right-handed. That means they will naturally choose lines on the right. So heading to the left will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.

Scientists have been trying to make soft and friendly robots, like Disney's Baymax, for years. And they have finally done it.

The "octobot" is the world's first soft robot. It is not like the scary, metal robots in movies like Star Wars or The Terminator. Instead, it is made of soft material, and looks just like an octopus.

Octobot is also the first robot that controls itself without batteries or wires, according to its researchers at Harvard University in the US.

The hope is that one day, soft robots like this will help humans do difficult medical surgeries and save lives in emergencies (紧急情况）like earthquakes and storms. 

Humans won't be in danger of being hurt if the robot accidentally touches you too hard. The octobot gets power from a chemical reaction(反应). It pushes gas through the robot's body and makes its legs dance. They used a 3D printer to create its silicone body.

"Humans ourselves, we're very soft and soft robots are made of materials that are safe for us to interact with," PhD student Ryan Truby, one of the octobot researchers, told BBC. Terry Trimmer, the editor-in-chief of Soft Robotics, told NPR that, "Soft robots and soft material technologies are certainly needed if we expect them to help us in the home or in natural environments."

They may not all look like an octopus in the future, though. Scientists have studied jellyfish in their research so far.

Last month, I returned to Australia to attend my elder sister's wedding. Although it was a very modern wedding, my sister kept on a tradition that comes from an old English poem. The poem says that a bride must wear "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". It is said to bring good luck to the marriage.

Something old is something passed on from the bride's family. It could be an heirloom that has been in the family for years, or a piece of her mother's dress. This is meant to show a connection with the bride's family.

Something new brings hope for the future of the couple. It can be the new wedding dress, or new shoes. Something borrowed is normally an item of clothing or jewelry. It is borrowed from one of the bride's friends who has a happy marriage. It is believed to bring some of the friend's luck in her marriage to the bride.

Last is something blue, which comes from another rhyme: "Marry in blue, husband be true." This means that a bride who wears blue will have a faithful husband. It could be blue on her jewelry or on her shoes.

These days, most brides do not believe that wearing these items will really bring them good luck. However, they wear them anyway in recognition that traditions are important.

How to Deal With People Talking About You Behind Your Back

It feels pretty terrible to have people talk about you behind your back. Here are some tips you can follow when you meet gossips(闲话). 

Being talked about behind your back can make you question your strengths and abilities. Don't lose heart. Instead, try to remember your value as a person by thinking about what makes you great. Sit down and make a list about things like "'I'm a great listener!"or "I'm creative!"

If you're feeling sad because of gossips, try to do something happy. For example, you could walk your dog, play with your cat, listen to your favorite music, or even write or draw something. 

Treat them with kindness. Give the person a real compliment(赞美), like, "Wow, Rose, you did a great job on these pictures. " For example, you could hold the door open for them or help them carry something heavy. 

Talk to someone who can help. Sometimes gossips may make it hard for you to do well in study. If this person is known for gossiping, your teacher might want to take action to stop it.

Nowadays, young people really like this kind of toy. Some buyers have collected over 1,000 dolls. In their eyes, the dolls are symbols of their personalities, or they just want to share something cute. 

However, the blind boxes are as hard to stop as gambling. Some toys are hard to get, so people sell them at higher prices in the second-hand markets. Some countries make rules to control the selling of blind boxes, and they work out well. 

To keep growing, Pop Mart needs to keep making something new and sell more toys. We wish that Pop Mart can be a world-famous company like Disney one day. 

Do you often compare yourself with other people? Whether it's the number of goals you've scored at football or how many books you've read, it's easy to compare yourself with someone else. It's a natural behaviour that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more. However,it's not always helpful and you can find yourself falling a comparison trap(对比陷阱). 

Comparison can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. "Comparing up" means seeing someone is better than you and using that to encourage yourself to aim higher and try harder. However, sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and undermine your confidence. "Comparing down" is when you see someone who seems like they're not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you're doing well, but it can also stop you wanting to improve. 

How do you escape(逃离)comparison trap? Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths(优势)rather than compare themselves to you. Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead. Finally, pay attention to your own achievements and how you can improve. The best person you can compete with is yourself. 

Let's make positive comparisons. This means you value your own achievements and not someone else's. Celebrate progress instead of the final result. It doesn't matter if someone is better or faster than you; it's important that how hard you try. Set some goals and pay attention to your progress. Instead of saying"I can't do it", say "I can't do it yet".

One of Vanessa's friends took one look at Niki and asked, "Why are you sitting with the snob, Vanessa? Come on and eat with us. " Niki's eyes filled with tears. 

Vanessa took a breath and then said, "I'm sitting with Niki because she's my friend and she's nice. How about finding out for yourself instead of believing every rumor you hear?" For a moment, everyone looked at each other. Then, very slowly, the other girls sat down at the table. At first, nobody said much, but soon, they started talking. By the time lunch was over, Niki realized that Vanessa was right - all she had to do was to be herself. And what everyone else needed to do was to stop believing rumors.
