People think differently, but how does this happen? To find out the answer, Dr. Guilford, a famous psychologist, carried out a study on creativity (创造力) in the 1970s, known at The Nine-Dot Puzzle (九点谜题).

In the research, Guilford asked participators (参与者) to connect all nine dots with at most four straight lines, without lifting pencils from the paper. As a result, only 20% managed to solve the puzzle. The following survey showed that all failed participators had looked for ways in the virtual (虚拟的) box, which is formed with virtual lines. But the winners could break out of the virtual box and continued their lines in the open space around the dots. The results of Guilford's research led him to an idea: creativity needs you to go outside the box.

The idea was widely spread soon. Overnight, it seemed that there were creativity experts everywhere, teaching people how to think outside the box. The idea was so popular that no one thought of checking the facts until two different research teams, did another study.

To check if Guilford's idea is correct, the participators were divided (分) into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as those in Guilford's study. The second group was told they could draw outside the virtual box. Most people think that at least 60% of the second group could solve the puzzle easily. Guess what? Less than 25% solved the puzzle. It was nearly the same as the result of Guilford's study. The result made everyone surprised, but it was the truth.

Let's look more closely at the surprising result. Solving this problem needs people to think outside the box. However, direct and clear instructions —"think outside the box" did not help participators solve the puzzle more easily. In some ways, the idea that thinking outside the box makes people more creative can be improper.

Face-to-face communication includes direct personal interaction (互动). Both parties can see each other's body language and facial expressions, and understand them easily, leading to more effective communication. A study has shown that in our day-to-day life when we interact with someone face to face, we have a nonverbal (非言语的) communication of about 93%. In addition, face-to-face communication is more effective in building trust and making deeper connections.

But considering the long distance and time cost, face-to-face communication may not be the best choice. So there, telephone, email, etc. are preferred. Without telephone conversation, some work may be difficult to get done in time. The conversation changes depending on what relationship you have with the caller. For example, it will be informal (非正式的) if you talk to your close friends or relatives. But if you are having a professional telephone conversation, then it will be formal. You must have a lot of practice and confidence to interact with the caller.

Telephone conversations have no nonverbal cues (暗示), but they offer the convenience of communicating from a distance and at any time. Also, as they cannot see each other, both parties can speak without being under pressure (压力).

At the VR medical school under Sichuan University, a virtual system allows medical students to examine the human body in different ways. They can even separate organs for closer examination. Students can practice their operation skills without a real body. 

Simon Leung, vice-chairman of a VR company, said the company has developed VR classrooms and computers that send students to a 360-degree digital world. Moreover, the VR headsets can tell whether children focus on the task at hand, Leung said. 

Chinese parents, however, have a different opinion on VR lessons. They are suspicious of VR because they are unsure if the technology will have any bad effects. They are worried about their children's eye sight, too. 

Besides, VR equipment comes at a price. A top VR headset and computer could cost up to 10,000 yuan. "We need to do more to lower the cost and improve the users' experience," said Huang Ronghuai, a professor at the Smart Learning Institute under Beijing Normal University. "But we are sure that we will change the model of education in the future. " 

If I had a cold, I wouldn't think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental problem, I might not treat it in the same way. 

At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember. This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was a topic in health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness is a "thing" that really exists. 

In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should car e about yourself or a friend, or who to reach for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have them, and you can offer timely help. 

I also believe we need to normalize discussions about mental health at an early age, rather than hide them from sight. At school, I saw a student's report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Inside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it is possible to start these discussions at a young age if we try. 

Although we can't change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they're feeling is a good start.
