Xu Ruiyang, a girl from Kunming, can only use her head and hands to move. She can't walk with her feet. At the age of 2, the doctor said that she could only live for a few years. 

Hearing that, her parents were heartbroken. But after crying, they still tried to teach her many easy things, like opening a book or putting up her hands. She learnt to use her head, mouth and hands to do a lot of things. 

When she learned to write, she couldn't take a pen at first. But after hard work, she could write about 500 Chinese characters (汉字) before she went to school. 

With her parents' help, Xu is a sunny girl now. "If we can't make her live long, we can make her life wide, " said Xu's father. They had trips to many places all over the world. Her parents try to make her life wide and interesting. 

"Life is short and problems are always there. But I will make good use of my time and be a happy person, " Xu said. 

Just think that one day your poop (粪便) might help build greener homes. Surprised? Scientists are working on it! Today we use bricks (砖块) to build houses. But when making bricks, lots of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) comes out and pollutes the environment. Scientists found that adding poop to bricks could cut down the pollution. Using poop is good in other ways as well. 

Greener and cleaner

Every year, lots of human poop is turned into sludge (污泥). The sludge is rich in silicon (硅), aluminum (铝) and calcium (钙). These things can make bricks. Scientists at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia tried to add different amounts of sludge to bricks. Too much sludge would make the bricks too soft. But mixing 15 percent of sludge can make the brick strong enough. And this can cut carbon dioxide emissions (排放) by 13 percent. Another good thing is that the germs (病菌) in the poop stay in the bricks. They won't pollute the land and rivers. 

More water-resistant (防水的)

In some villages in India, people mix cow dung (粪便) and mud to make their homes water-resistant. Scientists at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands studied this. They found that the dung is rich in fatty acids (脂肪酸). It can stop water from passing through. Based on their study, the team made new kinds of bricks with cow dung. They were 30 times better than today's bricks in water-resistance tests. They believe that human poop could do this too!

Do you often help others? What do you do for them? Helping others is an important part of life. This can make you happy. 

Do you like sports? Do you train with your family or friends? I love training with my husband Chris. I also train with my brother, his wife and our cousins. It's like family fun time! The competition also makes us work out a little harder. 

If you can get your friend to join you, you will be able to (能够) encourage each other on those days when the other doesn't feel like moving. If you set yourself a goal and add some competitions, the training will be much more fun. Time will fly by and you will want to do it again. 

This is why I had the courage to learn Chris's favourite sport—climbing. It was challenging for me, but now we have more fun things to do together. In turn, I introduced Chris to two of my favourite sports: horse riding and hurdling (跨栏赛跑). Now he also loves them. 

What if you live alone (独自)? You may think it is tough to train. In fact, it's not. Well, I'm sure you have a friend who would love to train with you. You are not alone. The important thing is to have a plan and to make the time to do it. It will be much more fun than doing it on your own. 

A new game is becoming popular with young people: hundreds of people come together, choose to be "cats" or "mice", share locations (位置) on their phones, and then play hide-and-seek (捉迷藏) outside. 

Young people say that this game not only gets people to exercise but also makes them remember their happy childhood. It helps people relax and turns running into a fun social game. The game has two rounds (轮) and most of the players don't know each other at first. In the first round, some people are "cats" and the rest are "mice". With five minutes for "mice" to run and hide, the "cats" find them by using the locations on an app. The second round is a group competition. 

We all played hide-and-seek when we were little. When I asked my friend to join me, he asked, "What's the purpose of playing this game as a grown-up?"

It turned out that the game was a joyful experience. "It was a creative way of bringing something new to old games with technology, " said my friend. "It is a good way to make friends, as they need teamwork. " For me, it's good that this activity got me moving as I'm not so interested in doing sports in my daily life. 

①Jogging (慢跑) is good for us and helps us live longer and healthier. It's easy to do and free. You don't need to use any money to go jogging. You can do it in a park or even at home. But many people find it boring after jogging for some time. So how can we keep jogging fun? Here are some ideas to make your jogging more interesting. 

②First, you should choose to wear your favourite sports clothes and shoes when you jog. They make you more comfortable (舒服的) and more likely to run. 

③Second, always jog outdoors. You can go to different streets or parks, and you will always have something interesting to enjoy when you jog. 

④Third, music is good and you can listen to your favourite songs when you jog. The music can make you excited and run farther without feeling bored. 

⑤Finally, it's always more enjoyable with a friend. Make friends while jogging. Join a running club, or invite (邀请) an old friend to go jogging. It's better to find a friend who runs a little faster than you. Then you can try to catch up with him or her. 

Playing a sport well may be difficult at first, but don't worry. The following is some advice for you. 

▲ If you don't know which sport you like to play, try a few! The PE class is usually a great chance to try new sports. 

Get the right equipment (装备). You can ask your parents for help. For example, you can ask your parents to buy you a pair of soccer shoes by doing housework for two months for them. 

Practise, practise and practise. Practise playing your favourite sport with your friends as much as you can. If you don't have anyone to play with, then practise by yourself. Sometimes you may get the chance to make new friends when you play. 

Eat healthily. A healthy body is very important in playing sports. Stop eating hamburgers and ice cream. Try to eat a lot of fresh (新鲜的) fruit and vegetables. Stop eating high-calorie foods like chocolate and cakes. Try to eat some healthy foods like carrots and apples. 

Watch games. Watch games to see how the players play. The more games you watch, the more you will know about the sport. 

I was very quiet before and I didn't want anyone to notice me. I listened carefully in class but never answered the teachers' questions. 

After I joined the basketball club, everything changed. At first, I thought it was crazy (疯狂的) because I didn't have the ability (能力) to keep up with the others in the club and they would laugh at me. But my teacher kept asking me to go for it. I agreed and decided to try. 

Taking the courage to try was only the half of it. When I first started having the practice courses, I didn't even know the rules of the game. That made me feel really stupid (愚蠢的). Luckily, I wasn't the only "new" one at the game, so I decided to learn the game, do my best, and not to find any excuses (借口). 

I practiced a lot. Soon I knew much about the game and learned how to move from the coach. Being part of a team was so exciting. Very soon I had a little ability but I wasn't very confident. As time passed by, I learned how to play basketball and how to work together. I changed a lot. When having class, I often raised my hand to answer the teachers' questions. I got much praise (赞扬). More importantly, now I am more confident. 

Welcome to Center Street. Center Street is a great place to have fun. There are a lot of stores and shops on it. It is a very busy street. If you want to play games, you can go to the video arcade. It is across from the big supermarket. There is also a new park near the supermarket. It is clean and quiet. You can enjoy your lunch in it. If you want to see movies, you can go to the movie house. It is between the supermarket and the park. 

It's 6: 00 p. m. Kate's family are having dinner. There is rice, eggs, salads, strawberries and some vegetables like tomatoes, onions and carrots on the table. But Kate doesn't like vegetables. She doesn't want to eat them and puts her bowl away.

At about 7: 00 p. m. , Mom tries to get Kate to eat some vegetables, but she says no. 

At 9: 00 p. m. , Kate wants to eat something, but her parents still don't give her anything to eat. 

At 10: 00 p. m. , Kate goes to the kitchen and sees some vegetables on the table. They don't look so bad. And you know what? They don't taste so bad, either. 

Kate learns that she should eat healthy food and live a healthy life. 

Tony's father has a food shop. It's Baker's Food Shop. It's not very big. It sells many foods and drinks. Many people like the hamburgers there.

Zhang Qian lived in the Han Dynasty. He was an early visitor (游客) on the Silk Road and brought many new foods and other things to China. The Silk Road was a long road. It was from China to Central Asia (中亚), and even Europe. Where is this dish from? The cucumber came from South Asia. In early times, Chinese people called it "hugua". "Hu" means "foreign (外国的)". That is to say it isn't from China. Later, its name changed to "huanggua". 

What about garlic? Its home was in Central Asia. Zhang Qian brought it to China about 2, 000 years ago. Garlic can make many dishes taste better. It is good for our health. 

What is the Silk Road? The Silk Road was also called "Sweet Road". Besides (除……之外) vegetables, it brought many kinds of tasty fruits to China, too. Do you like grapes? They also came from Central Asia. 

Do you ever see the words "hu", "yang", "fan" or "xi" in Chinese names of some foods? These names usually mean that these foods do not come from China, such as "huluobo (carrots)" and "yangcong (onions)". Can you find more?

An experience in China showed me how food can be a bridge (桥梁) between cultures. A Chinese friend took me to a restaurant in Beijing to show me a famous dish. He told me it was something unique and I didn't eat it before. 

Then I found it was ban mian. It was delicious, but I thought I tried it before. Is this not just pasta (意大利面) with Chinese style (风格)?

The Chinese ban mian made me think about the history of pasta. Italian explorer (探险家) Marco Polo brought back pasta from China in the 13th century. Then it came to the UK and it kept changing. 

Over the meal, I also looked back at my family's history. My father's family is Italian. My grandma told me that throwing (扔) the pasta on the wall can help to see if it's cooked. If it sticks (粘住), then it's ready to eat. But if it falls, then it still needs time to cook. Do Chinese do the same thing as Italians?

There are two kinds of dumplings in their restaurant. One has meat and cabbage, and the other has eggs and Chinese chives. Each bowl has sixteen mixed dumplings. That is to say, people can enjoy two different kinds of dumplings in one bowl, and it is only three yuan. "If we ask them to pay too much money for each bowl, they can't eat the dumplings, " they say. 

Because of the good price, many old people often eat here. The couple are very busy and their son sometimes helps them in the restaurant. When they see people in need, they give them a bowl of dumplings for free. The couple make a little money, but they still keep the restaurant, so people around here can eat dumplings. The couple are happy about it. 

There are many kinds of food in the world. In different countries, food has different meanings. Garlic(蒜) 

In Türkiye, many people often put garlic on their doors. They think it can bring good luck. In some country areas of Hungary, people put garlic on their beds. They think it is good for babies' and mothers' health. Green onions

In Egypt, many farmers think green onions are a symbol of truth. They often take green onions in their hands and hold them high when their ideas are different from others'. They show that the truth is in their hands. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are the star food. They are a kind of vegetable and they are also a kind of fruit. If there are no tomatoes, hamburgers won't be so delicious. In England, some young people give tomatoes as gifts to each other. Salt

People eat salt every day. In Hungary, when farmers move into a new house, they usually put salt inside and outside the new house. They want to keep away from scary things. In Russia, bread with salt is a kind of food to welcome visitors.

How are you? I'm in Beijing now. I like Beijing a lot. I have two good friends here. They are Bill and Wang Xin. Bill is from Canada and Wang Xin is from China. We are in the same class. Wang Xin often helps me with my Chinese. I can speak a little Chinese now. All the teachers are kind to me.
