Last Friday, a storm swept through two villages, destroying fourteen homes completely. Seven others were so badly damaged(被损坏的) that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken roofs. One person died, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people suffered minor injuries. Altogether(总共)over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.

Soldiers( 士兵) helped to take people out of the flooded area, and the welfare department( 福利部门) provided them with food, clothes and shelter. 

We should all have at least one fire extinguisher in our house or office building. However, it's not enough to simply keep an extinguisher somewhere. We should study this guide carefully and review it often to be ready for a sudden fire. Here is what we should do when a fire suddenly breaks out. 

⑴Have a clear exit route(疏散路线)

Make sure you have a clear exit route. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to make a safe exit. 

⑵Report the fire

Even if the fire appears manageable(可控制的), you should always have the firemen on the way. Once they arrive, they can check to see if the fire is put out. 

⑶Stand back

You should stay between 1. 8 and 2. 5 meters away from the flames(火焰) as you prepare to use the fire extinguisher. 

⑷Use the extinguisher

It can be difficult to think clearly during a fire. One way to help you remember how to use an extinguisher is to remember"PASS":

P-Pull: Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher. 

◆A-Aim(瞄准): Point the nozzle at the bottom of the fire. 

S-Squeeze(挤压): Squeeze the handle to let out the extinguishing chemicals. 

S-Sweep: Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is put out.

After the fire appears to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire starts again, repeat the"PASS". 

⑹Get to a safe place

Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, find a place out of the reach of the fire. 

We have many kinds of technologies now. Some around us can help people in disasters. 

The drone ( 无 人 机) is one of them. It can be used to send food, water and important things when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue( 救援) teams to get in, but they can make the drone fly into the buildings first to search for those who are still alive. 

Social media ( 社交 媒体) is also a useful tool when it comes to natural disasters. With its help, people can know about the natural disasters earlier. And some social media platforms(平台) allow people to mark themselves as safe after disasters, so others can know their status(状态). Social media is also a place for the latest news, so people can learn what is going on in the disaster areas. Besides, many social media platforms allow people to donate( 捐 赠 ) money to help people in disaster areas. The money will help them get back to their normal life as soon as possible. For example, live-streaming(直播) helped raise a lot of money for Henan after the flood in 2021. 

Although these technologies can help when there is a natural disaster, we still need to prepare necessary tools and learn important skills to protect ourselves. 

My dad and I went hiking in the mountain. We enjoyed the fresh air and decided to stay in the hotel for two days. However, I had one of the most terrible experiences of my life! A storm woke me up early. I got up and looked out of the window of our hotel. I listened to the thunder and watched the lightning. It wasn't scary at that time— it was exciting!

But then I looked at my phone and saw on the news that a hurricane was coming. I asked my dad what a hurricane is and asked him if he knew what to do. He told me not to worry because a hurricane is just a big storm. We stayed in our hotel room and by the afternoon, there was even more rain. And the winds were getting stronger and stronger. 

In the evening, a hotel worker asked all the visitors to go to the dining hall. When we were all inside, we put tables in front of the doors and then we got down on the floor together in the corner. We waited and waited. The winds got louder, the rain became heavier and then it suddenly went dark. I was so startled that I held (抓住) my dad's hand. We stayed there for a long time. 

Finally, morning arrived. The storm was over. I felt so happy that we were safe. I hope I will never have a night like that again. 

On January 7, 2025, a 6. 8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri County in Xizang. The earthquake brought a lot of damage(损坏) and problems to the local area. However, China showed an amazing rescue speed. 

Just 10 minutes after the earthquake, military planes took off quickly. They carried things for rescue and doctors to the disaster area. It showed how fast the country could act in an emergency. 30 minutes after the earthquake, the rescue teams got to the earthquake's central point. They began to search for people stuck ( 卡住) in the broken buildings right away. Even though the environment was bad, they didn't give up. Volunteers and local people also helped with the rescue work actively. 

Six hours after the earthquake, the electricity(电力) in the disaster area came back to normal. People could use lights at home again. On the same day, the communication was almost back. That night, people in the disaster area had hot meals. The warm food not only made them full, but also made them feel better. 

The rapid rescue work in the Dingri Earthquake shows China's strong ability to deal with natural disasters. It also shows that the country cares a lot about its people's lives.

On August 23rd, 2017, the strongest typhoon named Hato (天鸽) hit Zhuhai seriously. Do you still remember how 1 it was?

It seemed people all over the city stayed at home to  2  Hato's arrival. I sat by the 3 and kept watching the changes outside. The winds blew so strongly that the sky was in a mess. It was full of leaves and4 . More and more dark clouds hung over the city. 5  , the power was cut off while the winds were blowing like a monster. It was so scary that I 6 my ears tightly. HowI wished the typhoon could just disappear!

About fifteen minutes later, the powerful winds began sweeping with heavy rain. Even the big trees were uprooted. On my 7 , I saw the 5-meter-high waves rushing fiercely, with the Zhuhai Fisher Girl standing poorly there. 

The typhoon didn't die down( 逐渐减小) until 8 o' clock. When I got downstairs, I was8 to see a number of fallen trees, and they made the neighborhood look like a forest! Only then did I  9  how terrible Hato was. Luckily, people came together to clean up and learned a 10 from it. The typhoon broke many things apart, but it also brought people closer together. 

An old farmer felt sad as he looked over his destroyed crops(庄稼). A terrible storm swept through the valley(山谷) the night before, and his once 1  fields were now in a complete mess. His beans were all in the water. His neighbor, a kind young man named Thomas, came by to 2 a hand. 

"This is a disaster, " the farmer said. "My family lives on the harvests(收成) of the crops. I don't know what to do now. "

Thomas thought for a  3 . "I see this not as a disaster but as an opportunity, " he said 4 .

So the farmer planted new crops and introduced more diversity (多样性) to his farm.10 the storm destroyed(破坏) one harvest, it ended up saving more, for an opportunity lies in every difficulty, if we dare to see it.
