What to Do in a Fire

Fires can be very dangerous. If a fire starts in your home, you should know what to do. First, stay calm and find the best way out. Never use the lift—use the stairs instead. 

Cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth to avoid breathing in smoke. Stay low to the ground because smoke rises. If the door is hot, don't open it—there may be fire outside. Find another way out. 

If you can't get out, go to a room with a window and close the door. Open the window and shout for help. Never jump out of a high window. Wait for the firemen to come. 

Timmy's Experience in an Earthquake

It was two o'clock in the afternoon when the earthquake started. Timmy was working in his office. At first, he felt a slight shake. Then he heard a loud noise like thunder. Soon the real noise came, like bombs under the ground. The earth started to shake. 

People shouted in fear and ran out of the building. Timmy tried to run out too, but pieces of glass and bricks were raining down. He had to stay inside. After the noise and shaking ended, it was dark and silent. Timmy was trapped under the bricks. He shouted for help, but no one came for a long time. 

Hours later, he heard some noise above. "Help! I'm here!" he cried. Excited people moved the bricks away and saved him. Timmy was safe at last.
