Body language helps us show our feelings and understand others better. There are several common types of it. One is facial expressions. For instance, we smile to show friendliness and frown(皱眉) to show anger. The second is eye contact. We use it to show interest and avoid it to show disinterest. The third is hand gestures. We wave our hands to say hello or goodbye. However, the meanings of these gestures can be different in different cultures. For example, a"thumbs-up" gesture means"good" in many countries, but it can be rude in some places. So, learning about body language in different cultures can help us avoid misunderstandings and communicate better with people from all over the world.

You frown when you are angry or upset. Your parents gently pat your head to show their love. Some players like to throw their arms forward, as if they' re flying,after they score. How important it is!

Body language does not use words. The way you stand, a hand gesture and a big smile are all examples of body language. According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 per cent of communication is body language.  For example, your friend asks you to come on a picnic with him. You give him an"OK" gesture to say"Yes, sounds good!"Sometimes, your words say one thing, but your body language says another. You may touch your face unconsciously (无意地) while telling a lie.

 In the USA, eye contact during a conversation means you are interested in what the other person is saying. However, in some Asian countries, it is rude to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her. People in some countries use different body language to show the same meaning.  TheJapanese prefer to bow, and Maoris in New Zealand touch noses when greeting.

Host: English is an international language. But in your book, communication withoutwords is paid more attention to.    ▲    

June: Well, gestures and other body language have different meanings in different places. Something that you think is friendly or polite could be considered very impolite in another culture. I' ve described many of these customs and cultural differences, so my readers won't get off on the wrong foot when they meet people from places where the culture is different from their own.

Host: Can greeting someone the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding?

June: Yes, in some places it can lead to misunderstanding. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake, which is usual in some countries, may seem unfriendly to a North American.

Host: What other gestures can cause misunderstanding?

June: Take the gesture for"come here" for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm (掌心) up. Well, in Southern Europe, that gesture means"goodbye". And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought rude. Instead,people there gesture with the palm down.

Host: Surely, there must be some gestures used everywhere, right? What about the thumb-up(竖拇指) gesturefor"great"?

June: Sorry. That is very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it is important to know about body language and cultural differences.
