British people are famous for saying sorry in almost every situation. They say "sorry" for asking a question or for the bad weather and so on.

British people take pride in themselves on their polite manners. As a result, they use the word "sorry" quite a lot—even when they don't really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they would say, "Sorry to trouble you. Do you know what time it is?" If they are five minutes late for a date, they would generally say to the person, "Sorry, I'm late!"

That they say sorry does not only mean they feel sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck. In the dictionary, "sorry" also means feeling regret because they have done something wrong. And now, think about this. Normally, when they want to ask a stranger a question, they start with "Sorry to trouble you." In this situation, they aren't saying sorry because they feel sad for that person or because they feel regretful.

In the British culture, saying sorry is a way to be polite, especially to people who they don't know very well. Besides, it also can bring them other benefits (益处) in their daily life. In a recent experiment, an actor asked different strangers on a rainy day if he could use their mobile phones to make a call. When he asked one group of strangers and asked them without saying sorry first, he was only 9% successful. However, when he said sorry to another group about the bad weather before saying his request, he was 47% successful.

Doctors told him that he would probably never walk again, but Ed didn't want to believe this. He had recently got engaged (订婚) to the woman who is now his wife and he said that she was the main reason he wanted to get better. He spent six days staring at his toes (脚趾) and trying to make them move. Finally, he succeeded! This was the start of a long journey.

While in hospital, Ed met Paul, a man, in his late thirties. Doctors had also told Paul he would never walk again, but Ed encouraged him not to give up and six months later, Paul told Ed he was walking with a stick.

Only a year after his accident, Ed climbed the highest mountain in Wales. Since then he has also climbed a 6,500-meter mountain in Nepal and he said that after each big climb he noticed his body could do new movements.

Two years later, 31-year-old Ed climbed over 8.848 meters by going up and down his parents' stairs 2,783 times. When he finished, he told a news reporter he had loved it although it sometimes was "painful" and "boring". He also raised £46,000 for charity.

Ed hopes his story can help people. That's why he started his own charity, M2M, which aims to support "people facing challenges in life".

But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult and there are pictures in it. They make the book easy to comprehend.

In daily life, before children are going to school or a friend's house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can have a manner's competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.

What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldn't be noisy in class. And they should say "hello" or "goodbye" to teachers and classmates, and "thank you" when they get help from others. Good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouth full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.

In fact, good manners will provide a lot of help for your children in their daily life. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

This movie is inspired by Mexico's Day of the Dead and it won two Oscars (奥斯卡奖) in 2017. Miguel is a young boy not allowed by his many family members to play music, but he really wants to become a musician. He magically travels to the Land of the Dead, and there he learns about his family and its traditions. Prepare yourself because you will cry a lot during this movie!

There's not much dialogue, especially during the first half of this movie, but kids will still love it. Wall-E is the last robot on Earth. His main job is picking up rubbish from the past, but he discovers a new interest when he meets a robot names Eve. They go on an exciting trip that leaves kids with an important message about protecting our Earth.

Anna and Elsa are sisters and very different. For one, Elsa is a snow queen who can turn anyone and anything to ice. She hides away from the world while Anna likes to meet new people and open the doors to their mostly closed kingdom of Arendelle. When Elsa turns Arendelle into ice, she gets away to the mountains. Anna goes after her.

       For kids ages 5+   The Little Mermaid

In this Disney movie, we head under the sea, where a young mermaid (美人鱼) named Ariel hopes to become human after falling in love with a prince (王子). So Ariel makes a deal with the sea witch (巫师) Ursula. Ursula takes away Ariel's beautiful singing voice and gives her legs so she can find true love on land. This movie is full of great songs.

I thought it was "a sleeping walker". So I never bothered about it. But one night, when I walked past it quietly and quickly as usual, I heard a low voice.

"Do you often have to work at night?"

I was a little afraid. I looked around, but no one was nearby. I ran home as quickly as possible.

Later on, I heard it was a neighbor, an old man who has been living alone at home. He's not "a sleeping walker". He enjoys having a walk at night. So I seldom see him in the neighborhood in the day.

It's said that he was a soldier many years ago. He has two children—a son and a daughter. His son has a family in Shanghai. His daughter went abroad in Sydney. He has been living alone since his wife died several years ago. Without any child living with him, he feels lonely and helpless.

I feel sorry for the old man. We might care less about our parents living alone. When we grow up, our parents get old. We should often go back home even though we're busy with work.

There are only two weeks left before the new year. New Year's Day is on the way and is unusual day for everyone. It's time to think about (we) favorite topic: gifts!

Coming from the US, I have found giving gifts quite different in China. For example, in the US, when a person (receive) a gift, he or she will open the gift at once public. But in China, it's more polite (thank) for the gift and then open it later in privacy (私下).

Another different thing is about giving money a gift. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done (secret). They will put the money in a card and not discuss out loud., in China, things are different. Chinese (adult) prefer to give lucky money to kids. The money should be put in a red packet.

(final), the (value) of the gift is also different. In the US, a gift which is expensive usually makes people (excite). While in China, it can make people feel (easy), because they will worry about (choose) the same valuable gift to return the favor. So next time when you give a gift to somebody, I suggest (consider) the culture and meaning about giving gifts.

Music can change how you feel. Different kinds of music can1 you in different ways.

Music makes you relax.

Most stores play "background" music. The longer customers stay in a store, the more2 it will be for them to buy something. So stores try to play music that their customers3. Do you know something about tree rings (年轮) ? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago? Trees can keep a record of Earth's climate (气候) for a very long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of years.

A tree will grow well in a climate with lots of sunshine and rainfall, and little sunshine or rainfall will limit (限制) the growth of a tree. We can see the change of climate by studying the tree rings. For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we're sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.

Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying the history of man. Many centuries ago there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand there no trees and no people. What happened?

A scientist studied the rings of dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. As all the trees had gone, the people there had to move.

The highway is surrounded by high mountains and wide grasslands. If you drive on this road, you will see amazing snow-covered mountaintops and green fields. The road takes you through lots of canyons(峡谷) and rivers, and you can see wonderful nature at every turn.

One of the best parts of the Duku Highway is the Tianshan Grand Canyon. This is a really big canyon with red and yellow cliffs (悬崖). It is the perfect place to take pictures. You can also go hiking there and enjoy the fresh air and peaceful nature.

Another place you must visit on the Duku Highway is the colourful Danxia Landform (丹霞地貌). It is an area where the rocks and cliffs are changing over time. The rocks are bright red, orange, and yellow, and they look like a rainbow. That's why it is called "colourful Danxia".

The Duku Highway is really a great place for people who love nature. However, when you enjoy the landscapes, do remember those soldiers (士兵) who built the road for 10 years, and 168 of them lost their lives for it. This road is also known as the "Road of Heroes".

It all started on the first day of junior high school when we met. I went into the classroom, feeling nervous, because I didn't know anybody. While I was thinking about how hard my life would be without any friends in the class, I saw a boy with a funny square face walking toward me. He chose the seat in front of me and turned to talk to me many times. At that time, I didn't feel lonely anymore.

As we talked more, I found that we actually had the same interests. For example, we both liked basketball and math. What's more, we had the same personality, so gradually we became good friends.

I still remember the day I started seeing him as my best friend. That day I didn't finish my homework so I had to clean the classroom during the lunch break. I was feeling terrible, but he came to stay with me. He didn't have to do that but he said, "Mark, real friends support each other!" I was moved after hearing this. "Yes. ________," I said to myself. He is really a true friend and I hope that we will be the best friends forever.
