Last summer I spent a month helping out in a hospital with my parents for charity. I thought it was a nice chance to see if I really wanted to be a doctor. It was the month that changed my life. I was introduced to a completely different world from the one I knew, and I soon understood how difficult people's lives could be. But I was also shocked at how positively people went about their everyday lives. The way they came together and helped each other was a real encouragement. Although I'm a girl, I was not afraid of getting dirty or tired. 

My voluntary work in the hospital was hard. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and I also spent some time looking after the patients. I even talked to some doctors and learned about their jobs. They told me the difficulties of being a doctor in the hospital—hard work, long hours, and so many emotional (情感的) challenges. But they also said that they didn't want to change their jobs and they just wanted to go on. Though it was a difficult experience, it didn't change my mind about being a doctor. 

Once, a rabbit built a house. He built it so well that when a great rainstorm arrived, his house stood still. However, many animals in the forest lost their homes. 

Soon, one after another, the homeless animals came to the rabbit's house to spend the winter with the rabbit. Though it was crowded, the rabbit was quite happy to share his house with them. 

In spring, all the animals returned to their own newly-built homes. One day the rabbit was playing happily outside. He did not realize that a lynx (猞猁) was watching him nearby. One of the animals who had spent the winter in the rabbit's home saw this and warned him just in time. And the rabbit came into his home. 

The lynx destroyed that house, but the rabbit ran to hide in the home of another friend. For a whole day, the lynx followed the rabbit from house to house, but the rabbit always tried to save himself. He was helped all the time by the friends because they were all given help by him in the winter. 

Through this story, we know that helping others is helping ourselves. 

March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. To call on people to learn from Lei Feng, each year's March 5 has been named as "Lei Feng Day." 

Lei Feng is probably the most famous Chinese soldier. He died more than 60 years ago. But the "Lei Feng spirit" still encourages Chinese people to do voluntary work. 

At this time, a group of Malaysian students, studying at the Changsha Social Work College, volunteered(义务做) to serve passengers at the Changsha Railway Station with their Chinese schoolmates. They worked patiently to help passengers with boarding safety (乘车安全) and ticket booking. They also provided waiting rooms for special passengers and solved problems for them. 

"I was so excited when I was called a ‘living Lei Feng'!" said Lan Zhicong (Chinese name), a student from Malaysia. He learnt about Lei Feng's stories when he was in Malaysia. After he came to Changsha, the hometown of Lei Feng, he became a "living Lei Feng" and continued the "Lei Feng stories" with his behavior. "Volunteering is about giving, but I've gained a lot, too." he said.
