1、Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as "silk", and it was so valuable that it was called "China's Gold". Following the kings' orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. In China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料), gold, and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies, and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like paper-making were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music, and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined (融合) Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. The library is just seven square meters in size but houses thousands of books on different subjects. "It might be the smallest library in the world," said Xu Dawei, the owner. People nearby8 each other small gifts — some local snacks from their hometowns. A young student tried to speak English9 Mr and Mrs Green to practice his oral English. Jim thought the train was like a big warm family. He went to sleep quite late. He enjoyed listening to the sound of the running train and the soft talks around, then fell asleep.
When Jim woke up the next morning, the train was10 near Guilin. His train ride seemed really short, but his memory of the kindness and warmth on the train will last long.

Hi, everybody! I'm Mark. The new year is coming and as usual. I will make a few resolutions at the beginning of the year. But this time I will stop dreaming.
First of all, I'm going to spend less time talking and more time doing. Last year, my friends and I spent too much time talking. There is a lot of work to do in the new year, so I'm going to make good use of my time.
Secondly, I'm going to spend less time in front of the TV and the computer. They are fun but also time-consuming. It's better to spend time reading books.

Lastly, I'm going to keep on writing stories because I want to become a writer in the future. I think a great writer should be good at writing stories.

Do you notice that people around you like different things? Some love painting, while others enjoy basketball. The differences make life interesting. Let's explore why accepting (接纳) them is important and how we can do it.
Differences help us learn.
He told me about his country's food and festivals. I learned more from him than from a book! When we accept differences, we discover new things.

How can you be more accepting?
First, listen like an explorer. Ask questions without judging (判断). If a classmate wears unique (独特的) clothes, try asking. "Where did you get that shirt? It looks cool!" Second, treat others how you want to be treated (被对待). Do the same for others and you'll build stronger friendships.

Xiaolongbao, also called steamed buns, is very popular in China. Many people love it for its soft skin (外皮), tasty fillings (馅), and fresh soup.
When it comes to Xiaolongbao, a lot of people easily connect it with Hangzhou, an important city in Zhejiang. They believe it is the birthplace of the food. Actually, the real birthplace of Xiaolongbao is Shengzhou. The city is about 120 kilometers southeast of Hangzhou. Here's how the misunderstanding started.
Long ago, the owner of the first Xiaolongbao restaurant in Shengzhou wanted to draw more customers. Since Hangzhou was already famous at the time, he planned to write "Hangzhou Xiaolongbao" on his signboard. This trick worked, and more people came to his shop to try the snack. When the other shop owners saw this, they did the same thing. That's why the name "Hangzhou" is still connected with the food today.
Now, around 50,000 people from Shengzhou run over 20,000 Xiaolongbao shops across China, making fresh, handmade buns every day. But the process takes time and needs much work. Putting things off is a common trouble for many middle school students. With piles of schoolwork and after-school activities, it's easy to feel anxious and push things to later. Soon, you may fall behind in classes, and your grades might drop. According to the experts, there are some effective ways to fight it.
First of all, break big tasks into tiny and manageable steps. A huge project can feel as scary as climbing a mountain. But if you divide it into small parts, it becomes much easier. Just tell yourself, "Today, I'll pick a topic and write one paragraph." Tomorrow, you can do some research and add another section. Finally, the "mountain" will be overcome before you know it.
Besides the "tiny steps" method, the "work-and-rest" trick also helps a lot. Set a timer for 25 minutes—during this time, focus fully on your work. During the period, you can have a snack, walk around your room, or stretch your legs freely. This short rest lets your brain refresh, and it's easier to keep going once you start again. Put your mobile phones away and find a quiet spot where you can focus.
What's more, treat yourself to something small after finishing a task, like listening to your favourite song or eat a piece of candy. These little rewards keep you motivated. Be patient with yourself-even small progress is progress. Finally, you'll surely see the payoff of your hard work.
A. Then take a five-minute break.
B. Also, stay away from what pulls your attention.
C. For example, you've got to write a five-page paper.
D. But if you keep putting them off, they can snowball.
E. Change doesn't happen overnight, so stick to it every day.

20、Beejhy Barhany grew up in an Ethiopian-Jewish family in Israel. She has loved cooking since she was very young. Now, she runs Tsion Cafe in New York and still follows many cooking traditions. One of these is washing raw meat before cooking. For Barhany, putting raw chicken in salt and lemon water is both useful and part of her culture.
In fact, a 2015 study showed that nearly 70% of Americans wash their chicken before cooking. However, since the 1990s, experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have advised people not to do this. They state that rather than reducing the risk of foodborne illness, washing raw meat makes it more likely to spread bacteria (细菌) around the kitchen, which may make people sick.
"Washing meat before cooking isn't really helpful," says Betty Feng, a food science professor at Purdue University. "The only thing it does is splashing (飞溅) water and can spread bacteria to other places in your kitchen—like your sink and your clothes." Moreover, Feng strongly disagrees with using saltwater, vinegar, or lemon juice, because they are not strong enough to kill bacteria. "If the acidity (酸度) is high enough to kill bacteria, you wouldn't be able to touch it with your hands," she explains.
A recent study also found that placing meat in a bowl of water reduced the splashing but not the spread of bacteria. "I would treat the sink just like the outside of the chicken—it could also be dirty and unsafe," says Benjamin Chapman, an associate professor in North Carolina State University. "The way that we make meat safe is through cooking, not through washing away bacteria."
(1)、Why does the writer mention Beejhy Barhany's story at the beginning?A、To introduce the topic. B、To make a comparison. C、To state the author's opinion. D、To broaden the readers' horizons.(2)、Why does Beejhy Barhany wash raw meat before cooking?A、She believes it is the only way to kill all bacteria. B、A recent study proves that this method is the safest. C、It is practical and also a common practice in her culture. D、The USDA strongly recommends this method to all Americans.(3)、Which of the following would Betty Feng and Benjamin Chapman most probably agree with?A、Washing raw meat is a necessary step before cooking. B、Washing raw meat may spread bacteria in the kitchen. C、Placing meat in a bowl of water makes it completely safe. D、Using saltwater or lemon juice is strong enough to kill bacteria.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A、How to Wash Raw Meat Safely B、Scientific Studies on Illnesses Related to Food C、Beejhy Barhany: A Chef and Her Cooking Traditions D、To Wash or Not to Wash? The Debate Over Raw Meat
