On Oct 18, 2025, the world said goodbye to Professor Yang Zhenning, a famous scientist and Nobel Prize winner.  He passed away in Beijing at the age of 103.   We admire his amazing life of learning and helping others. 

When Yang was young, he was full of questions about the universe (宇宙).  He went to the USA to study physics.  With another scientist, Li Zhengdao, Yang made a big finding about the laws (法则) of nature.  

For Professor Yang, winning the Nobel Prize wasn't everything.   He worked hard to build a bridge between scientists in the USA and China and encouraged many scientists to share their ideas. 

In 2003, he came back to China to teach at Tsinghua University.   Yang didn't use PowerPoint and corrected homework by hand.  He also helped build a world-class research center at Tsinghua. 

In 2015, Yang gave up his USA citizenship (国籍).   He called his home "Gui Gen Ju (归根居)" to show his life had come full circle. 

①Hua Luogeng was one of China's most famous mathematicians.  Born into a poor family in 1910, he left school at 14 to help his father in a small shop.  However, he never stopped learning.  Every night, after a long day of work, he studied math books by candlelight. 

②At 18, Hua got a serious illness that left him with a disability in his leg.  But this did not stop him.  He wrote letters to famous professors, sharing his ideas about math problems.  One professor, Xiong Qinglai, was so impressed by Hua's talent that he invited Hua to study at Tsinghua University. 

③At Tsinghua, Hua worked harder than anyone else.  He read every math book in the library and published many papers.  Later, he went to Cambridge University in England, where he made breakthroughs in number theory.  When he returned to China, he became a professor and trained many young mathematicians. 

④Hua believed that math should be useful to ordinary people.  He often said, "Math is not just for experts; it should help solve real-world problems. " He traveled across China, teaching workers and farmers how to use math in their daily work.  Even today, his spirit of perseverance and love for learning inspires millions. 

Throughout history, many great people have changed the world with their ideas and actions.  Here are four of them:

These people came from different backgrounds, but they all shared one thing: a strong belief in making the world better.  They faced many difficulties, but they never gave up.  Their stories teach us that anyone can make a difference, no matter where they come from. 

If you were asked to introduce Lu You, how would you describe him? A famous poet who loved his country? But do you know that Lu was also a "slasher (斜杠青年)" of his time? If he had a social media profile (个人资料), it might read like this: poet/ politician (政治家) / foodie/ cat lover.  

Born in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), he was one of the most productive poets in Chinese history.  About 9, 300 of his poems are still around today.  Many of these are filled with a wish to protect his homeland, making him a famous patriotic (爱国的) poet.  

As a politician, Lu tried his best to offer advice to the government.  At that time, the Southern Song Dynasty was often attacked by the northern Jin Dynasty (1115-1234).  Lu spoke out against the Song government's weak policy (政策) and called for fighting back.  However, he was downgraded because of this.  

Although disappointed with government work, Lu found joy in food.  While serving in the Shu region, he wrote over 100 poems about cooking and growing vegetables.  Many believe that his secret to long life was his healthy eating habits.  He even wrote a poem about the benefits of porridge.  

Lu also found comfort in his cat friends.  He wrote funny poems to his cats, showing how cute they are and how they gave him warmth on cold days.  That's what made him such a true cat lover! 

As a man of a great national dream and someone who loved life's small joys, Lu showed us that a full life can be built with many "slashes"!

During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was an official (官员) called Qi Huangyang living in the State of Jin.  One day, the king asked him who would be the right person to be the county magistrate (县令) of Nanyang.  Qi Huangyang 1 for a while and answered, "Xie Hu is the right person for the job. "

The king was very 2 this answer.  He knew that Xie Hu was Qi Huangyang's 3 .  Xie Hu didn't like Qi Huangyang at all.  The king didn't 4 why Qi Huangyang recommended (推荐) Xie Hu.  5 he asked Qi Huangyang, "Isn't Xie Hu your enemy? Why did you recommend him to do the job?"

Qi Huangyang replied, "You only asked me who would be the right person to be the county magistrate.  You didn't ask me whether Xie Hu was my enemy or not!" The king 6 .  He thought Qi Huangyang was a 7 man!

This is the story behind the Chinese idiom "Da Gong Wu Si".  Now we still use it to describe a person who is perfectly 15 and selfless. 

Mrs. Ringo is Peter's favorite neighbor (邻居). She is an old woman and she lives with her son Tony. They have two big dogs—Milo and Tilou. Mrs. Ringo has a big yard (院子). In the yard, there are beautiful flowers and an apple tree. She gives Peter apples every autumn.

Every summer, Mrs. Ringo and Tony go to visit Mrs. Ringo's friend Sara in Shanghai. When they aren't at home, Peter and his parents take care of Milo and Tilou. Peter washes the dogs. His mother makes food for the dogs and his father takes the dogs for a walk. When Mrs. Ringo comes home from Shanghai with Tony, she gives gifts (礼物) to Peter and his parents to thank them.

Peter likes Mrs. Ringo very much. He is happy to be neighbors with her.

Nick can't find his watch (手表). It is blue. Blue is his favourite 1 . The watch is from his uncle, Tom. Nick 2 his father at 879–0949. He says, "Dad, I can't 3 my watch. Do you know 4 it is?" Mr. Smith says, "No, I don't. Is it on your desk?" "No, it's not 5 the desk," Nick says.
