  • 10、I am a member of the Young People's Chorus (合唱团) (YPC) of New York City. The chorus is made up of children ages 8 to 18. I've been in the chorus for almost five years. Every year, we give a big performance to raise money for the organization. It's the biggest concert of the year and is held at Lincoln Center. A lot of work goes into the final performance.

First, we begin learning our music. We usually start by learning the notes, and then we add the words. Someone comes in to teach us the meaning and pronunciation of the lyrics(歌词) if the words are not in English.

Next, we keep the whole song in mind, even if we only sing part of it. One of the hardest pieces we sang this year was Tjak. It has four parts, each with a different rhythm (节奏).

Once we add dynamics (力度变化) to our songs to give them life, it's time to addchoreography. Jacque Bird, the director, tells us to connect the words we sing to our movements as we breathe and count in our heads.

As we get closer to the concert night, the rehearsals (彩排) get harder. My knees and arms start to hurt. But once we get a break and some food, we come back feeling better. We rehearse on weekends for almost a month beforehand. Every moment is important and worth it.

The real excitement comes during the rehearsal, when we meet our guest artists. This year, YPC invited Mandy Gonzales, Alexandra Socha, and Time for Three to join us. After hearing that we would work with them, we jumped up and down.

Showtime! We sang with musical guests and performed wonderful dances. At the end of the night, we shouted with excitement. For all of us, pulling off the biggest performance of the year felt great.

  • 16、How do animals talk to each other? Could we ever understand them? Dr Karen Bakker gives an exciting answer in her book The Sounds of Life: How Digital Technology Is Bringing Us Closer to the Worlds of Animals. In the book, she explains how AI could act as a "translator (翻译)" between humans and animals, helping us finally understand their world.

Many animals make sounds we can hardly hear. Elephants, for example, talk with each other using sound waves (声波). Coral (珊瑚) in the ocean also uses sound waves to guide its young to safer places. However, by putting field recorders in such environments, scientists can collectthem.

After recording the sounds, AI can study their meanings. In one study, scientists in Israel used AI to listen to bats'15,000 calls. They found that more than 60 percent of bats' "conversations" were arguments about four things: food, sleep positions (位置), personal space and unwanted behavior (行为).

This technology doesn't just help scientists understand animals' sounds, but also communicate back to them. Researchers in Germany once built a robot bee with an AI system that understood bee "dance language". They placed it in a real beehive (蜂巢). The robot created a set of dance moves to give orders like "Quiet down" or "Stop", and the other bees followed.

Thanks to AI, animals might finally be able to tell their stories and make it possible for us to listen to them. But we also have to think about the problems it may bring. Will humans use robots to "talk" to wild animals? Will the "translating" technology finally help or hurt (伤害) them?

(1)、How does the writer begin the passage?
A、By listing numbers. B、By asking questions. C、By telling a story.
(2)、The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 3 refers to "________".
    A、safer areas B、sound waves C、field recorders
(3)、According to the passage, AI helps people understand animals in many ways EXCEPT ________.
A、by picking up sounds humans cannot hear B、by working out the meanings of animal sounds C、by training animals to understand animal sounds
(4)、What's the purpose (目的) of the passage?
A、To introduce some interesting facts about how animals communicate. B、To remind people of the dangers AI might bring to animals. C、To show how AI can help communicate between animals and humans.
