No one expected that Baduanjin would become popular among young Chinese people. In the past few years, an online teaching video of Baduanjin, a form of Qigong, has been played for more than 10 million times. "I have been doing Baduanjin for about four months. It helps me sleep better and get stronger. I like Baduanjin very much because it gives me a much healthier lifestyle," a young man said.

Baduanjin is one of the oldest health and fitness ways in China, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. Its name is made up of two parts, namely "baduan" and "jin". The first part refers to eight separate movements. And the second part refers to the stretch (伸展) and grace (优美) of the movements.

Compared to sports such as ball games or swimming, Baduanjin is slow and usually played with quiet music, so it used to be considered as a sport for the elders. In recent years, however, many young people came to realize the advantages of the sport. It helped kill their neck and back pain after long working hours while not requiring much effort, time and space.

Sun Yuxuan, a college student majoring in martial arts (武术), has also noticed the rising popularity of Baduanjin. The 21-year-old girl has been teaching other students to practice Baduanjin for over three years. They started with 20 members in 2019 and the group has 45 members now. "Every member in the group is very healthy." she said.

Raheel was a smart and hardworking student, but he had a bad habit of being late. This often caused him to miss parts of his1 , making his homework difficult for him. He didn't think it was a big deal, though.

Spring Festival is the most exciting festival for every Chinese kid.festival usually falls in January or February. We look forward to it for several (month)—family reunion dinners with tasty dumplings, colorful fireworks, and watching them light up the night sky. Everyone wears new clothes  greets each other happily. The streets are full of laughter. It  (feel) like the whole country is celebrating it together.

SQ3R Methods

Reading your textbooks and other class materials is an important part of your education. It can sometimes feel like a challenge. The SQ3R method can help you make good use of your reading time.

SURVEY

Start by skimming the material quickly. Focus on the headings, subheadings, tables and pictures. Find out what the material is mainly about. Also, try to answer these questions: Who is the writer? What type of text is it? 

QUESTION

You can turn any heading into a question. For example, the heading goes, "When Desserts Meet Ancient China". You may ask, "How are desserts and ancient China connected to each other?"

READ

Keep your questions in mind and read actively to find the answers. Take short notes under each question. Focus on the key information. Remember that you are not reading to understand everything about the material.  In that way, you will be better prepared for class.

RECALL

Recall the key points in your own words. 

REVIEW

Look at your questions, answers, notes and the material itself to find out how well you did at recalling the main ideas. Note the parts that you still don't understand and pay special attention to them in class.

Will you use the SQ3R method when reading? Why or why not? (No more than 15 words.) 

How do you turn on the lights in your bedroom? First, your brain decides what to do. Then, you use your arms, legs, hands and feet to carry out the action. Finally, the lights come on.

In the future, however, things may work in a different way. We will have a new technology called BCI, that is, the brain-computer interface. With it, computers can know what we want to do — like turning on the lights — and control the machines for us at once.

But how does BCI know what we want to do? In fact, our brain has a large number of tiny parts called neurons (神经元). These small parts "talk" to each other by using electricity. As they send messages to each other, information moves quickly between our brain and the rest of our body.

One neuron cannot make strong electricity by itself. But when a great many neurons work together, they can make strong electricity outside our head. We can know this electricity by putting special tools on our scalp (头皮). (Look at the picture on the right.) Many BCI systems use these special tools to know what our brain is thinking.

Some of the earliest BCI systems were made to help disabled people who have lost the ability to move or speak.

In recent years, BCI technology has helped many others as well. It is now used to make wheelchairs run and video games more enjoyable.

In the coming years, BCI systems will likely become part of daily life. Do you want to turn on the bedroom lights? Soon, you might only need to think about it!

In the busy streets of Shanghai, many people come up to take photos with a young woman. She is not a star, but an Australian who wears traditional Chinese ethnic（民族的） clothes. Her special look turns heads. Many people are so interested in her clothes that they stand to watch.

The girl's name is Lile Mahoney. She has lived in Shanghai since she was a child. From folk dance to traditional food, she has always had a deep love for Chinese culture. Now 21, Lile studies Chinese Language and Literature at East China Normal University. Her social media videos, "Foreigners Challenge: Wearing All 56 Chinese Ethnic Clothing", have made her popular online.

She started the challenge with a video where she wore traditional Mongolian (蒙古族的) clothing. One moment, she is in her usual clothes. Next, she shows up in a beautiful Mongolian coat. As she walks down the street, many people stop to ask her questions to learn more about what she is wearing.

Over the following months, Lile tried many other ethnic clothes. She didn't just wear them. Instead, she looked into the culture and history behind them. Sometimes, she even traveled to visit the ethnic groups. In Guizhou, for example, she dressed as a Dong (侗族的) girl and joined the local people in singing and dancing during a traditional festival.

Lile says the challenge is not only about fun and fashion, but also about bridging different cultures. Many of her friends in Australia knew little about China's rich traditions until they saw her videos. Lile hopes her videos will inspire more people to take a closer look at Chinese culture.
