My Space Knowledge

Can you imagine how hard it is to cook in space? It's impossible to cook food in the way we do on the earth, so all the meals are ready-made on the earth before astronauts leave for space. 

At first, space food for astronauts was simple. Each meal was in a little packet. It was easy to carry and eat, but it didn't taste good. But now, food scientists on the earth work hard to make sure that the food is healthy and tastes good. 

For Chinese astronauts, there are more than 120 kinds of dishes and soft drinks. They are carefully chosen, so they are balanced, taste good and can be kept for a long time. The recipe is usually a five-day cycle. The food scientists divide them (分成) into weekly breakfast, lunch and supper menus. And the menus are made according to the astronauts' flavour preferences. Most Chinese astronauts like Sichuan-style spicy food. They can also eat chocolate, canned fruit and biscuits for snacks. 

As the food scientists know more about space, space food will get even better. Maybe one day, astronauts will enjoy all kinds of tasty foods just like we do on the earth!

China's space programme has made remarkable progress in recent years. One of the  (great) achievements is the construction of the Tiangong space station. The name "Tiangong" means "Heavenly Palace" and comes from ancient Chinese legends,  shows the rich cultural heritage behind modern science. 

The first core module, Tianhe,  (send) into space on 29 April 2021. Soon after, astronauts arrived  the station and began their work. Life in space is very different from  on Earth. Everything floats because there is no gravity. Astronauts have to stick their sleeping bags  the wall to stop  (float) around. 

 spite of the challenges, astronauts enjoy their life in space. They can see the sun rise 16 times a day and perform spacewalks. Nie Haisheng, one of China's first astronauts to enter Tiangong, said he was always ready  (face) the next challenge. 

Besides the space station, China has also developed the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS). It can be used for two-way communication, even in areas  mobile network is not available. This makes BDS special and useful for people all over the world. 

Scientists found an exciting new thing in space. It is called 3I/Atlas,  it's a kind of special comet. What  it so special? This comet comes from outside our solar system! We call such things interstellar (星际的) travelers. 

 the solar system, many comets go around the sun. But 3I/Atlas is different. It's just passing by on its long trip through space. This is actually the  time that scientists have found such a visitor from another star system. When people first heard about this strange comet, some asked: "Could it be an alien spaceship?" Scientists found that it's  a natural thing. Like all comets, it has a bright  and sometimes shows a tail when it gets near the sun. 

3I/Atlas is very far from the earth. Scientists found that it will never come close to  planet, so everyone can feel safe. 

Why are scientists so  about this space visitor? Because it can help us learn more about other star systems in the . We can find out how planets and stars form in different parts of space by  these interstellar travelers. Who knows? Maybe one day you will make an important discovery about space, too!

Have you heard of Yang Liwei, Nie Haisheng and Wang Yaping? They are all great astronauts. Do you want to be an astronaut like them? Maybe some students say "yes".  Now let's learn about how to be an astronaut. 

You must have a healthy body. To be an astronaut, you need to be very healthy. Good eyesight, a strong heart and lungs are important.  For example, you can't have scars (伤疤) on your body because they may split (裂开) in space. 

You must get a pilot's license. In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut.  For example, you must fly more than 600 hours without accidents. After that, you'll start training when you become a backup astronaut (预备航天员). 

You must receive some hard training. You need to be as strong as professional athletes by taking exercise.  You will also wear a 200-kilogram suit and do tasks underwater for six or seven hours without eating or going to the toilet. 

You must learn some courses. Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts have to take 60 courses to get ready for a mission (任务).  After taking different courses, they will know how to deal with all kinds of problems during the mission. They also need to do scientific experiments in space. 

The moon is the earth's only natural satellite. It's about 384, 400 kilometers away from our planet. Even though it looks very bright in the night sky, the moon doesn't have its own light. It reflects (反射) light from the sun. 

A day on the moon is very long. One day there lasts about 27. 3 Earth days. Because there's no air to keep the heat, the temperature changes quickly on the moon. During the long day, it can be as hot as 127℃. During the long night, it becomes very cold, about -180℃. Also, there's no air, so people cannot live on the moon. 

The gravity (重力) on the moon is only about one-sixth of the earth's gravity. This means if you can jump one metre high on the earth, you can jump six meters high on the moon! It feels like you're flying. That's why taikonauts on the moon jump when they walk. 

The moon goes around the earth. It takes about 27. 3 Earth days to finish one circle. The moon's gravity pulls on the earth. This is what causes the ocean tides (潮汐). The tides are the daily rise and fall of sea level on the earth. So, the moon is very important to our planet. 

Have you ever dreamed of travelling in space? For many kids, staring at the stars leads to daydreams about what it would be like to be an astronaut (宇航员). Just think about how amazing it would be to set foot on the moon or another planet!

Although it sounds like it would be great fun to travel to outer space, it would be a lot of work too. Travelling to outer space needs lots and lots of preparation. 

Once you are in space, nothing can come on board the ship and nothing can go out. You must take all you need into outer space to keep yourself alive. Let's call these things "inputs", including food, water and oxygen. ①Every input creates an output. If you open a box of cookies for breakfast, what will you do with the box when it's empty? Every piece of rubbish you create in space will remain on the ship with you. Your body will also output food and water. Since nothing can leave the spaceship, you will have to think of another way to deal with the bodily waste. 

②Even breathing creates an output of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)! It's true that plants depend on carbon dioxide in the same way humans depend on oxygen to breathe. ③If you take a banana tree with you, you will need to bring enough water to keep it alive. You must also consider another type of output rubbish in the ship after taking the fruit as snacks—the banana peel. 

④See how carefully you have to plan for a trip to outer space? How can you plan your actions to have the least influence on the environment? You have to think about all the things you'll need, and you will also have to consider the influence of those things because of the waste they may create.
