Last night, one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue, but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I've ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened.Later, I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.

The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing' s father taught him to play many musical instruments, such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing's life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.

Abing's amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day.Today, Abing's Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China's national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing's own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or painful experiences.

Culture shock is often described as a feeling of being mixed-up or worried in an unfamiliar place that has customs different from your own. This happens a lot to students who go to study in another country.

In the US, students might find culture shock experienced in the classroom harder to deal with. This is not only because they feel nervous about their ability to communicate in English, but also because they need to become comfortable with a discussion-based class. And students' grades on a big test are also not openly discussed, because they are personal information.

Many international students report feeling OK with the sometimes embarrassing mistakes at a restaurant or store. But they start to feel strong culture shock when they are often faced with some uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations. "Americans are very open about expressing their thoughts on everything," said Chau, a student from Vietnam. "I had a hard time getting used to speaking up about how I feel and going straight to the point."

"When I first came to America from China, it was hard for me to understand that Americans drink ice water all year round. I can't understand why drinking ice water in winter doesn't make them cold," saidJessica, another student. "It's hard for me to get used to the fact that many banks and offices are closed on weekends," she added. "This is sometimes inconvenient for me, because I don't have time to deal with things during the working days."

Getting used to social customs is just one part of getting used to life in America. If international students plan to get an internship(实习) when studying in the US, there is also the possibility for culture shock at work. For example, having a different professional dress code(着装要求), communicating in English by email, etc.

No matter what the situation is, international students can try to use these tips to help them feel better and get over it. Stay positive, be social, know yourself and give yourself a break.

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can't win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure. So we must know how to be a good loser.

We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can't be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡).When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn't work. They achieved success although they failed many times.

Losing is not very shameful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. If someone else can help, we'll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.

 There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations to the winners and share in their happiness, we won't feel sorry for our failure.

In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly they finally win.

Traditional Chinese painting(guohua) is a traditional Chinese painting form. It is usually painted on silk or paper using a brush with black ink or coloured paint. The  can be divided into characters, landscapes, and flowers and birds.

There are two  skills in Chinese painting. One is gongbi, drawing details in fine strokes(笔画) and rich colours. It's often used to draw people or animals. The other is xieyi, drawing in rough(粗的)strokes and light colours. with gongbi, xieyi pays more attention to expressing the artist's feelings. Xieyi is often used in landscape paintings. 

From the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, artists painted many detailed and beautiful pictures of the emperor's family. By the Sui and Tang dynasties, landscape painting had already built itself as a(n) form of expression. These paintings were less detailed and allowed artists to  express their understanding of the subjects.

The time from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms to the Northern Song Dynasty is known as the "Golden Age of Chinese Landscape Painting". Using bold strokes and black lines, artists showed wave-like hills, rivers and stones. During the Song Dynasty, artists began  poetry and calligraphy (书法) to their works to express their thoughts and feelings.

Colour printing skills  during the Ming Dynasty, which marked a great milestone. This made it possible  illustrated(有插图的) books on the skills of Chinese painting.

Western art had a(n) on China in the late 1800s and 1900s. Some painters, after studying , returned to their homeland and joined the best of both cultures in their art.

Artificial intelligence(AI) can help us make phone calls, guide us to the places where we want to go, and play games with us. Now, AI can do even more things.

Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English, Business Standard reported.

According to Microsoft's official website, researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from news stories. Then, language experts compared the results to two translations that were done by humans. The experts concluded that the system's translations were as good as the human translations.

Machine translation is always challenging. This is partly because different words can be used to express the same meaning. It can be hard to say which word is more"correct". To improve the system' s translation abilities, experts used several methods. "Much of our research is inspired by how we humans do things," the lead researcher Liu Tieyan said.

One method is called dual learning(对偶学习). In this method, the system translates every sentence from Chinese to English, as well as translates the sentences back from English to Chinese. This way, the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to make sure 

their translations are accurate (准确的).

Another method makes use of deliberation networks (推敲网络). The researchers taught the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over. Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people revise their own writing, that is to say, to make better word choices by going through it again and again.

China is a country with many great mountains. The mountains listed below are either among the most famous or the most beautiful ones.

It's important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example to them.

But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult. There are also pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.

Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they're going to school or a friend's house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can also have a manners competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.

What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldn't be noisy in class. And they should say "hello" or "goodbye" to teachers and classmates, and "thank you" when they get help from others. When children are at table, good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.

In fact, good manners are very helpful in children's self-growth. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.
