Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish writer. Treasure Island is one of his most famous books. In this book, the main character is Jim Hawkins. He lives near the sea in England. His parents have a hotel and they want Jim to be the future owner of this hotel, but Jim doesn't want to live like that.

One day, Jim meets an old seaman called Billy Bones. He has a map showing the location ( 位置) of Captain Flint's  treasures on an island far away. After Bones dies, Jim gets the map. He takes a ship to the island with Squire Trelawney, Dr.  Livesey and Captain Smollett. Jim finds that there are pirates (海盗) among the people on the ship. Their leader is a one-legged  man named Long John Silver. He is a cook on the ship. The pirates try to take the map from Jim and his friends. But they all fail. After many adventures, Jim and his friends find the treasures. Jim and his friends go back to England finally. Although Robert  Louis Stevenson wrote the book in 1881, Treasure Islandis still a popular book until now. Both children and adults enjoy this  exciting adventure story.

Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers of all time.

Beethoven was born in  1770 in Bonn, Germany. He had a difficult childhood. His father, Johann, was a musician for the king. Johann started to give Beethoven piano lesons before he was four years old. Beethoven was so small that he had to stand on the piano seat to reach the piano. When Johann saw how quickly his son learned, he knew his son had talent. He decided to make Beethoven into a concert performer, and he was very strict. He hit Beethoven's hand when he made a mistake and often woke him up in the middle of the night to make him play for friends. In 1782, he played for the king, and he was only 12 years old!

When Beethoven was about sixteen, he went to Vienna to study. While he was there, he played for many important people, including the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. When Mozart heard him, he told his friends, "Keep your eyes on  him. Someday he will give the world something to talk about."

Unfortunately, when Beethoven was in his late twenties, a terrible thing happened to him. He began to lose his hearing.

But inside his head, the music continued to play. His music was  so beautiful that  some people cried when they heard it. Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827 when he was 57.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes:    Here, we look at two examples.

A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. The people  in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.

  Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing.    Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged (损坏的) parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.

Music improves concentration ( 注意 力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities.   Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.

In the deep blue sea, there lived a fish called Rainbow (彩虹) Fish. He was not just a common fish, but the most beautiful fish in the ocean. There are some shining scales (闪光鳞) among his colorful scales. He thought himself so beautiful that he never played with others.

One day, a little blue fish asked for one of his shining scales. However, the Rainbow Fish refused and shouted, "Get away  from me!" Shocked, the little blue fish just swam away. From then on, no one would have anything to do with the Rainbow Fish. They turned away when he swam by.

Now the Rainbow Fish was the loneliest fish in the ocean. So he went to an old fish for help. "This is my advice," said the old fish. "Give a shining scale to each of the other fish. You will not be the most beautiful fish anymore, but you will find out how to be happy."

The Rainbow Fish took the advice. First, he gave the smallest scale to the little blue fish. Then, when the other fish were all around him, he shared his scales left and right. Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left, yet he was very happy.

The loveliest house that I have ever lived in is Crosslands. I lived there with my grandparents when I was a child.

The house seemed so huge to me as a child. And it had a lovely living room with a piano in it. And there was a strange room. It was the drawing room. We only used it on Sundays, or when visitors came for tea. There was the best furniture in it but it was covered with sheets—it was as if all the furniture wore clothes. We couldn't enjoy this beautiful furniture.

I went back to the house a few weeks ago. It has changed a lot. My uncle has modernized (使 … … 现代化) it inside, and taken away the lovely furniture. And he has knocked a wall down so the drawing room and the living room have become one big room.

Although it becomes modern, its old style is the most beautiful in my heart. When I see the house, I know I can't go back and catch it. But there's still a beautiful memory.

China's Hainan Island

Hainan Island is a wonderful place with comfortable sunshine, sand and sea. It is in the South of China. It's famous for its underwater beauty. Tianyahaijiao is also very famous. It attracts (吸引) lots of tourists around the world every year.

Thailand

Thailand is in the heart of Southeast Asia. Its capital Bangkok has some of Thailand's greatest buildings, like the Grand Palace (大皇宫).

Chiang Mai (清迈) is a big city in Thailand. There are many historic temples (庙) there, for example, the Wat Phra Singh temple. The temple has a history of over 600 years.

Australia

This country is a land of beauty and diversity (多样性). It is famous for Sydney Opera House and Ayers Rock. Ayers Rock is 348 meters high. What's more, children can also see many animals there like koalas, kangaroos and sheep.

South Korea's Jeju Island (韩国济州岛)

As a volcanic (火山的) island, Jeju once was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Not only that, Jeju attracts children with its Teddy Bear Museum. The museum shows historical events through teddy bears.

If you go to Hawaii, you may enjoy beautiful    with big waves there. Hawaii is a good place for   and surfing. That is    many surfers all over the world go there to take part in surfing  .

Surfing is one of the world's most popular water sports. It first    on the islands of Hawaii. Now it is enjoyed by many people in the world and Hawaii is famous    water sports. Waikiki Beach is one of the  beaches for surfing in Honolulu, Hawaii. The    there is so nice all year round, neither too hot nor too   . And the waves there are very high, so Waikiki attracts a large    of tourists and surfers every year.

Have you ever been to an amusement park? Did you have a special experience there? I had an  1 trip last time. I went to the amusement park in my hometown with my family several months ago.

You may wonder  2  I agreed to go on the ride called The Dark Knight Rides. I knew it was going to make me scared, but I didn't want to lose the chance to  3  myself because I wanted to be brave. The ride started after we went on the seats and sat down  4  the seat belts fastened (扣紧安全带). It started off slowly. Then I felt more and more 5  because it kept getting faster and faster each time it took a turning. Then it  6  stopped. Yes, it did stop. I didn't know how long we waited there. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes. All the  7  started talking about what was going to happen. We all agreed that it would start quickly, but it didn't. When I sat next to my sister waiting for this nightmare (噩梦) to end, it started getting dark with only one  8  on. The ride started again, and it went on quickly. After that, more and more lights were on and beautiful pictures were shown while the ride was getting slower and slower  9  it stopped. All the tourists shouted with excitement when the ride ended. Just at the moment, I found out it was  10  decision to be brave that brought me the wonderful feeling of success during the ride.
