Have you got any ideas to help a child to grow? One of the best answers is to keep pets. 

Jeff used to be a boring boy and was not  in anything. However, things changed when he visited his uncle's farm one day. He noticed a little pig and asked his uncle  he could keep it as a pet. 

"Are you sure you can take good care of it?" his uncle asked. 

"I  !" answered Jeff. His uncle was pleased to hear that and agreed immediately. Jeff named the pet pig Boris. 

Boris is fat and  and it follows Jeff around like a dog. Every day, I can hear their happy noise playing together. Actually, Boris is quite cute, and I  living next door to it. Besides, Boris is not  at all, for Jeff gives it a bath every afternoon after school. Boris eats  fruit and vegetables. Jeff often goes to the market to pick up vegetable leaves and take them home for Boris. Boris eats whatever is given. However, it has its  too. It likes apples a lot, but it likes grapes even better. Every evening, Boris would sit next to Jeff's  while he is doing his homework. We are all very surprised to see all this. 

At weekends, Jeff often  Boris along the street. While jogging after Boris, Jeff often sings so loud that I believe he is one of the happiest persons in the world now. 

①On Oct. 18th, students at Clarence Middle School in New York, US, took part in the 2024 Walk for Water event. They helped raise money to bring clean water to people in Uganda. 

②During the event, students walked a mile with heavy jugs（罐）full of water. They went through some of the hard things people in Uganda face. Ugandan children walk a long way every day to get water. 

③Over the past 10 years, Clarence Middle School has raised more than $200, 000(about 1. 4million yuan) for the Ugandan Water Project. That money has helped build up more than 50 rainwater tanks（雨水收集池）across the country. 

④"The water walk is just giving you an idea of what they have to do every day, " Zach, a 7th grader, told WIVB. He said that it helps inspire（启发）them to raise money to get clean water for more people. 

⑤The Walk for Water event made a difference for schools in Uganda. In 2023, the Ugandan Water Project received enough money to help set up a rainwater system at the Kawsum Modern Primary School in Lubanyi, Uganda. This system now gives clean water to 21 teachers and about 480students. Teachers and students at the school no longer have to walk a long way to get water anymore. 

Why do people get more colds and flu when it's cold outside? In a new study, scientists have found the answer. That is, the cold air breaks the immune response（免疫反应）in our noses. 

The nose is an important part of our body's immune system. When a virus goes into the nose, the cells（细胞）in the nose will create billions of simple copies of themselves called extracellular vesicles(EVs). 

"EVs can't divide like cells, but they are like little cells that can kill the viruses, " said Benjamin Bleier, the researcher of the study from Harvard Medical School. "They are like little arms that catch the viruses when you breathe them in. " Then, the viruses on EVs will be expelled from our body as snot（鼻涕）。

However, when cold weather hits, the nose's"superpower" becomes less powerful. The study found that when the temperature in the nose drops by 5℃, nearly 50% of the billions of EVs will be useless. Cold air makes people catch viruses more easily because"you' ve lost half of your immunity（免疫力）", said Bleier. 

This is why we should wear masks in winter. "Wearing masks can not only protect us from viruses, but it's also like wearing a sweater on our nose, " Bleier said. The warmer you keep your nose, the better it works to fight against viruses. 

In the future, Bleier expects to see the development of nose medicine that build upon this new finding. Scientists may find a way to"fool the nose into thinking it has just seen a virus", Bleier said. 

①One day Mrs. Smith was waiting for her doctor in the waiting room when a boy and his mother entered the room. The young boy caught Mrs. Smith's attention because he wore a patch（眼罩）over one eye. She felt surprised at how natural he looked even though he lost one of his eyes. 

②The doctor's office was very busy that day, so Mrs. Smith had a chance to ask the little boy what happened to his eye. He thought for a long moment, then said, "I'm a pirate（海盗）!" Then he returned to his book. 

③Mrs. Smith was there because she lost her leg from the knee down in a car accident. Her trip that day was to check whether it was OK to have a prosthetic（假肢）. She had always felt terrible. She knew that her leg shouldn't influence her life too much, but deep inside her heart, she couldn't get out of the fear and sadness. 

④The boy's word"pirate" changed her life. Immediately, she saw herself as Long John Silver, a famous pirate, standing proudly on a pirate ship, heading bravely towards the storm. 

⑤A few minutes later, the nurse called her. As she got up on her walking sticks, the boy noticed her leg. "Hey lady, " he called, "What's wrong with your leg?"

⑥Mrs. Smith looked down at her leg for a moment. Then she answered with a smile, "Nothing. I'm a pirate, too. "

From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I 1 a note. The note might be a thank-you for a special moment, or a few words of 2 for the coming test or sporting event.
