"Only when I take the needle out and touch the silk thread do I feel fully comfortable, " said Zou Yingzi. She is an artist of Su embroidery (苏绣). 

Zou comes from Suzhou, the hometown of Su embroidery. She learned the art from her mother and grandmother. At the age of 6, Zou started to help her mother make embroideries. It's not easy work. Su embroidery is famous for its amazing details. A single silk thread can be split (分开)into 16 or more strands ( 股 ) . Zou uses these thin strands to make a cat's fur or a bird's feather(羽毛). It needs a lot of time. A small piece can take embroiderers months to make. But Zou enjoys her work. "I can work for days without sleep to make a fine piece, " she said. 

Su embroiderers can make their works look like oil paintings or photos. 

Silk is delicate (脆弱的) . Embroiderers wash their hands often and use hand cream(护手霜) to keep their hands clean and soft. This way, the artwork won't be damaged (损坏的). 

Today, Su embroidery is popular all over the world. Many visitors like to buy some embroidery pieces to take home after visiting Suzhou. Su embroidery has become a beautiful business card for traditional Chinese culture, showing the beauty of Chinese art to the world. 

My sister Sharon is crazy about her bag. She takes it everywhere with her. She takes it with her when she goes to school, when she goes shopping with her friends, and even when she sees the doctor! So for her birthday, I decided to surprise her. I decided to give her a special bag. I bought a number of badges(徽章) with her favourite cartoon characters on, a few fabric (布料) badges, a few colourful buttons and a plain bag. 

This is how I made my special bag:

1) I arranged(排列) the badges and buttons on the bag in a number of ways until I was happy with how they looked. 

2) I fastened(扣紧) the badges to the bag. 

3) I used my mum's needle(针) and thread to sew the buttons and the fabric badges on. I had to be very careful not to hurt my fingers!

4) I fastened a badge to the end of the zip(拉链). 

5) Finally, I wrapped the bag up in colourful wrapping paper. 

On the morning of Sharon's birthday, I quietly went into her room and left the present there. I then went into the dining room and had breakfast. A few moments later, I heard a loud scream, then I heard some quick footsteps. I looked around the door and saw Sharon standing there. She was holding the new bag close to her chest, with a very big smile across her face! She liked my present!

What's DIY exactly? It stands for "Do-It-Yourself". DIY began in the1960s in the West. In Western countries, it was very expensive for people to pay someone to repair or decorate their houses. So people tried to do most things around the house themselves. An English TV host named Barry Bucknell made it more and more popular among people. Now people can do many things by DIY. 

Why are so many people crazy about DIY? When you do DIY, you' re sure to save some money. It may take you some time to do it yourself, but you needn't spend any money asking someone else to do things for you. 

DIY makes you special, too. Use your mind and try to make something great with your two hands. They are just what you want and need. YourDIY products can make you more popular among friends. 

What's more, DIY makes you feel great about yourself. When you do DIY, it's just a kind of exercise to keep you healthy. And it makes you feel close to nature and enjoy the joy of work. Also, it makes you be serious about your work and stop thinking about anything unhappy. 

For parents, DIY is also a great way to educate children. When children do DIY, they get some knowledge ( 知识 ) they can't learn from books. They can learn some life skills that are good for their future. 

In a word, DIY is always staying with us because we really need it in life. 

In Britain, people have a strange hobby. Whenever there's a Bank Holiday weekend, a certain(某种) kind of shop always gets very busy, and it's not what you might think—a clothes shop or a music shop. A large number of people go to DIY stores and garden centres instead of relaxing at home. 

Doing DIY is very popular in Britain and there are lots of TV programmes which show people how to do DIY projects. Some people just do some simple decorating— putting up wallpaper and painting walls. But there are all kinds of DIY projects that some people decide to do, for example, putting in a new shower. 

Gardening is also popular, and it is a good way to enjoy the weather on a sunny Bank Holiday. But it's not as simple as planting plants and doing some watering. More difficult work such as building a new garden or making some decorations can cause a backache(背痛). 

So why do people do it? Maybe they are so used to working that they aren't very good at relaxing. One thing is for sure— though a lot of DIY or gardening projects will be started with the best plans, many of them may not get finished!

Chinese paper cutting has a history of thousands of years. Because the cut-outs(图案) are also used to decorate windows, they are sometimes called "chuanghua" or Window Flowers. People think they can bring people good luck, health and happiness. 

In the Han Dynasty (朝代), paper began as a precious (珍贵的)thing, so few people could use paper for art. From the 7th to 13th century, paper cutting became so popular that almost all the families decorated their houses with cut-outs during festivals. The art spread(传播) to the whole world in the 14th century, immediately (立即) catching people' s eye. 

In the past, every girl in the countryside was expected to master the skill of paper cutting. It is easy to learn it, but mastering it is another thing. Usually, good paper cutting artists are men. 

When you look at cut-outs carefully, you will be amazed by the subtle(细微的) expressions of the character's feeling and appearance, or the lively portrayal (描绘) of natural plants and animals' different gestures. 

With a little touch of art, you can turn simple fruit into a nice and cute gift for a birthday or a surprise for your family.
