Learning a new language is never easy— and it will be much more difficult for you to learn it well if you make these three common mistakes below. 

You do not practice listening enough. 

The same way as how babies learn to speak, we learn a language by listening and repeating what we hear. Language learners need to practice listening. And there are some interesting ways, such as listening to English radio programs and watching English movies or TV shows. 

You are not curious enough. 

In language learning, interest is the most important. If you aren't interested in the language when you are learning, you may never learn it well no matter how hard you try. 

You are not brave enough. 

It doesn't matter how well you can write in the language or if you can get good grades in a test. To learn, improve, and truly use the language, you need to speak it out loudly. "I am really shy. " "I am afraid that other students will laugh at me. " These are just excuses(借口) for not trying. As the saying goes, "Practice makes perfect. " The more you practice speaking in front of others, the less difficult it will get. 

A wise man said, "You live a new life for every new language you speak. So stop making these mistakes and try to enjoy the fantastic world the new language brings you!"

A young man went to an expert( 专家 ) on gems ( 宝石) and wanted to learn from him. The expert shook his head. He worried that young men wouldn't have the patience (耐心) to learn. In his opinion, they were always in a hurry. 

The young man asked the expert many times to let him have a try. Finally the expert said, "Be here tomorrow. "

The next morning the expert put a jade (翡翠) stone in the man's hand and told him to hold it. The expert then went on with his work, cutting, weighing and setting gems. The man sat and waited excitedly. The following morning the expert again placed the jade stone in the man's hand and told him to hold it. On the third, fourth, and fifth day the expert repeated the action. 

On the sixth day the young man still had to hold the jade stone, but he could no longer stand ( 忍受 ) the silence. "Sir, " he asked "when am I going to learn something?"

"▲, " the expert replied. 

Several more days went by. The man became more and more impatient. However, when the expert placed a stone in his hand one morning, the young man shouted without looking at it, "This is not the same jade stone!"

"You have begun to learn, " the expert said with a smile. 

Everyone can learn. But whether you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research (研究) shows that successful learners have some good habits in common (共同的). 

Creating(创造) an interest in what they learn. 

Studies show that if you are interested in something, your mind is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners can always find interesting ways to learn. 

Practising and learning from mistakes(错误). 

"Practice makes perfect. " Good learners will keep practicing what they learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander GrahamBell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes. 

Developing their study skills. 

Good learners know the best way they can study. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. They also look for ways to review (复习) what they learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student. 

Asking questions. 

Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning. 

Learning is a lifelong journey. So, be a clever learner, and you will become a successful learner. 

All English learners want to improve their English, but as you know, it can be difficult! To learn English well, you need to work on many things. Reading is one of them. 

Reading English is something you can do to help you learn on your own. When you are reading, take a dictionary with you to look up new words and then write them down in a notebook. Try to use these words in conversations. It's a great way to learn. 

Newspapers are good for higher-level students. But for lower-level students, try reading children's stories or books written in fun English. You won't learn much if you choose a book that is too difficult or too easy. You should find something that is challenging and interesting. How can you find something wonderful to read? The Internet is full of what you can read. 

When you are reading, don't try to understand every word, and don't keep reaching for the dictionary every few seconds! Instead, try to understand the meaning of the text first and then read it again for more details. For words you don't understand, try learning how to guess the meaning from the context(上下文), or look at the other words in the sentence that might help you. 

Many people from different countries are learning Chinese. Is it easy or hard for them?
