If you put two bottles of water—one hot and the other cold, in a fridge, which will freeze(结冰) quicker? The cold water, right? But in fact, the hot water most probably freezes first. Strange, isn't it? Scientists call it the Mpemba effect(效应).

Once Erasto Mpemba, a school boy, was making ice cream in a cooking class. He was surprised to find that a heated mix froze more quickly than a cold one. He wondered why this happened. When Osborne, a university scientist, came to the school, he asked him about it. It seemed so unbelievable that his classmates laughed at him for asking such a stupid question, but Osborne took it seriously. He suggested that they work together to find out why. They tested many times by using water with temperatures from 25℃ to 90℃, and found that the higher the water temperature was, the less time it took the water to freeze. It means water at 25℃ takes the longest time to freeze and water at 90℃ takes the shortest.

What causes this effect? Some scientists think that the gas leaves water as water heats up, which makes it freeze quicker. Other scientists think differently. They say water in a bottle keeps moving, with hot water rising and cold water going down. This convection is stronger in the hotter bottle, which makes hot water lose heat faster than cold water.

Last winter, the Mpemba effect became popular online. Many people went to Harbin and threw hot water into the freezing air. The hot water would turn to ice at once, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful ice mist(薄雾) in the air. People took videos of this process and put them on the Internet.

On April 8th, 2024, Touching China 2023 went on the air on CCTV-10. Ten role models were honored. Liu Lingli is one of the role models. She is a teacher at a special education school in Hengyang City, Hunan Province.

In 1991, Liu graduated from a special education college. Then she returned to her hometown to be a teacher for deaf children. In the past 30 years or so, Liu has helped them like a mother. She offered at-home lessons to some students who could not make it to school. She gave away her money to the school to help poor students with their studies. She even decided to put off her plan to have a child so that she could teach better.

However, all this was not the most difficult part for her. The hardest time came in 2005, when the doctor said her newborn baby had innate hearing loss（先天性听力损失）. Doctors told Liu there was no hope of making her son speak, but she didn't give up. Every night she would go home to teach her son. Her hard work paid off. Her son began to speak when he was 1 year old.

Three years later, Liu's school began providing preschool（学前的）education for little kids with hearing loss. Because of her experience in treating her son, she served as the head teacher of such classes. Thanks to Liu's careful teaching, quite a few students have got back their speaking ability.

" Watching these children live happily like normal children is the most satisfying moment for me," Liu said.

The Boy Who Biked the World is a book about travel adventure. It was written by Alastair Humphreys, who completed a four-year bicycle ride around the world. Each year, he 1  talks in schools to many thousands of children. Over time, he has learned exactly which parts of his own 2  make the children enjoy the book.

From what Alastair learned and his own travels, he wrote a story that children love. In the story, the  3 is a boy called Tom who really wants to be an explorer（探险者）. One day, Tom finally 4  on his own adventure. He travels,5  Europe, the Middle East and Africa on his bicycle. The story is full of lots of 6  tacts about the countries he visits, and the local people he meets.

One of my favourite parts is the opening of the book. Tom is caught daydreaming in his maths class. This has 7  to me too. I love Tom. My favourite thing about the whole book, however, is the 8  illustrations（插图）and little notes. They always make 9  laugh loudly.

I would certainly introduce this book to anyone who loves geography and wants to go on an adventure.10  the book is for 8-to 12-year-olds,I think older students will enjoy reading it too.

My hometown is village in Fuqing. Many years ago, it was small and poor. All my relatives lived nearby and we had no TVs or cars. We (general) didn't have any modern machines to do farm work. Bridges were destroyed and nobody was allowed (get) close. Moreover, rubbish was thrown everywhere, many people couldn't stand（忍受）the poor life and left for the city. But the situation (change) so far. In the past 10 years, people thought of many ways to deal with the terrible situation and great changes have taken place in my hometown. More and more new factories have been built. We can work near our houses. The old can get good medical care in new  (hospital). We can relax ourselves in the park our spare time. And there is  (little) pollution than before. The environment has improved a lot. Besides, our public transportation is excellent, too

What the government has done has a great influence on people's life. People in  (I) hometown now are living a richer life. And we are sure our hometown  (become) better and better in the future. 

Nobody can be happy all the time. You may become unhappy sometimes, for example, when you fail an exam, or when you lose one of your friends or . It's normal to have these feelings. If you don't know how to  with these problems, you may learn something from Jeff. 

Jeff almost went mad after his brother' s death. He  to go out and talk to anybody, even his parents. Jeff felt that the world was not . 

After several months, Jeff began to understand it was useless to be angry. Now he still misses his brother, but he is beginning to talk to his parents and that makes them happy again. Besides, he has also made a decision  . He no longer stays in his room by himself. Instead, he goes to the movies or plays sports with his friends. He is feeling better now. 

A teacher was having a music class. The students were listening to the teacher 1 . When a new student arrived at the music class, all the 2 laughed immediately. 

" Be 3 , children. Let's meet Mr Boo. I used to teach his children. Now Mr Boo no longer has to work, and he wants to 4 the flute（笛子）, "the teacher told the students.

Getting English Language Learners to Put Down the Books and Have Some Fun

Even if there's so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting, a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions. 

Communicate with strangers.If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom.  Students may not speak to strangers, but they' ll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learnt in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech. 

Let their guard down. One difficult thing for learners is confidence（自信）when they speak English. Fun activities, especially those outside of the classroom, give students a chance to feel relaxed.  It may take a bit of time at the beginning, but once students get into it, they'll start to get confidence. 

Make use of English media（媒体）. Most recorded language instruction is pretty boring and it can get tiring hearing the same voice repeat the same phrases. They will hear common expressions and more everyday conversations in the movie. If they're not sure about something they hear, it can turn into a more formal lesson once back in the classroom. 

Casual（随意的）conversations give learners the chance to hear or use English in situations. They can talk all they want about expressions to use while dining out or informal words to use with friends, but it takes a trip to McDonald's or a picnic in the park for many of those expressions to truly set in.
