One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. 

Listen to them.

 Don't talk too much if they don't ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say. They just need someone to talk to about their feelings. 

If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. Your friendship will last long if you help each other. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't need to do everything they want you to do. 

Be there for them.

If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve (值得) to be with them when they're having a good time!

Make plans with them.

Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you enjoy.  And you'll still keep these things in mind when you're old!

Marie didn't like Eva's friendship with Tom, so she told her husband that she didn't want any smell of horses in the house. St Clare told Tom to stop working with the horses. Eva told her father she liked going for walks with Tom. So Tom had orders to leave what he was doing when Eva needed him. Eva and Tom spent a lot of time together. 

Tom noticed that St Clare didn't look after his money and his house very well, and that he spent too much money on the wrong things. He started making some suggestions, and soon St Clare understood that Tom's business advice was very good. After some time Tom started to look after the house expenses (费用). 

Tom also noticed that his master didn't take anything seriously and didn't live well, and this worried him. One night St Clare went to a party where he drank too much. He came home very late, and Tom and another slave (奴隶) had to help him to get into bed. Tom went into his room and prayed (祈祷) for his master. 

The morning after, St Clare gave Tom some money to do some business for him. Tom took the money but he didn't move. 

"Well, Tom, what are you waiting for?" said St Clare. "Is everything alright?"

"I'm afraid not, Master, " said Tom. 

"What's the problem? You look very serious. "

"I feel very bad, Master. I thought that Master was always going to be good to everybody. "

"Well, Tom, am I not? Do you need anything?"

"No, Master is always good to me. But there is someone that Master isn't good to. "

"What do you mean?"

"I thought about it last night. Master isn't good to himself. "

St Clare felt his face become red, then he laughed. "Oh, Tom!" said St Clare, with tears in his eyes. "Well, you're right. Never again, Tom, I promise. "

It was a dark evening in 1999. Song Yang, a Chinese student, lost his way in West London. This was only his third day in the UK. He saw an old man carrying heavy bags on the side of the road, unable to move. Song helped him home. 

The old man named Hans, lived by the River Thames (泰晤士河) alone. Although the view was amazing through the window of his house, it was a mess inside. 

Learning Song was looking for a place to stay, Hans invited him to move in. They agreed that they would split (分摊) the bills and care for each other. Hans often helped Song learn English and get to know the country. Song helped make meals and do the housework. Soon the two became friends and family. Each time Song came back to China, he would take Hans with him. 

In 2007, when Song completed his studies in the UK and returned to China, Hans had to stay in London by himself. After a few months of living without Song, Hans got very sick. He lost over 20 kilograms and couldn't even get out of the bed. Song couldn't stop thinking and worrying about Hans, so he went to London. In 2008, Song brought Hans back to China. Hans finally recovered (康复) and he lived a few years of happy life with Song and his family. Hans always said, "China is my home because Song is my family. "

In 2013, Hans died in Zhengzhou. For more than 4, 700 days, both the young and the old had kept their promise of caring for each other. 

Everyone needs friends. As the old saying goes, "Friendship is one mind in two bodies. " But how can you find a real friendship and keep it? The Care and Keeping of Friends written by an American author tells young students some smart ways to find friends. 

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should do his or her best to help you. To make friends, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives. 

But things cannot always be happy. Even best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, you can have an honest talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk with you, you may write a letter. The author says there are three steps about being friends again: tell him or her how you are feeling, say what you have done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. 

The book also gives advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friend's success. Even if you haven't had a real friend before, you will start to think about having one if you read this book, because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life.
