  • 2、阅读短文及文后A~E选项,选出可以填入各题空白处的最佳选项。

Long before Wikipedia and Encyclopaedia Britannica, there was Historia Naturalis. Its writer was Pliny the Elder. Pliny worked hard and read a lot. His helper read to him while he was having meals and while he was bathing. His helper even carried him around Rome in a chair while he was reading. He thought walking was a waste of time.

It was thought to be the oldest encyclopaedia in history. Historia Naturalis covered almost everything, from mice to Mars. "No Roman writer has completed such a project," Pliny said proudly. Unluckily, two years after the encyclopaedia appeared, Pliny died.

The world always changes, and accidents can hardly be stopped. Editors of encyclopaedias like Pliny collect and write down the knowledge of our world. I think an encyclopaedia is not only a record of what its editors know, but also a record of what they don't know.

Pliny was wrong when he said there were seven planets, including the Sun and the Moon. After all, Historia Naturalis was a book thousands of years ago. Those were all Pliny knew at that time.

Similarly, both Wikipedia and Encyclopaedia Britannica have some wrong information.

Roger Lewinter, an American researcher, thinks encyclopaedias can't record all human knowledge, but just some of it. They can never be completed. They are always waiting for someone—perhaps you—to improve them.

    A. Historia Naturalis came out in 77 AD.

    B. Pliny took notes carefully all the time.

    C. Luckily, these things can be written down.

    D. Even the best encyclopaedias only show what their editors know.

    E. He was also wrong when he said Africans were black because of the Sun.

  • 4、Have you ever wondered why so many apps are free to use? After all, they cost money to run. Well, instead of paying with money, you're paying by sharing your personal data (数据). Then businesses buy and use the data so that they can show you targeted ads (定向广告).

What happened to personal information online?

Many free apps get paid by businesses who want to know about the users of the apps. What a business wants is the exact information about customers. Data brokers collect your data—everything from your name, location and education level to the topics you search for, the websites you visit and the people you follow. And then, sell them to businesses.

    ________?

The data is valuable. Businesses can use the information from data brokers to target their ads. It means they will show their ads to the people who are most likely to be interested in their products or services.

What can we do about it?

Many countries have made laws to protect personal information. For example, a law in the United States says businesses must get parents' permission (许可) to collect personal data from kids under 13. China's law on personal information protection came into effect (生效) on November 1st, 2021. At the same time, we should try to protect our data. If an app asks for something like your location, consider saying "No" first. In short, information about you is very valuable. Try to protect it.

Without saying a word, he went back inside. I was terrified for a while, but when I went back to the fence. I noticed two words had been added: "Thank you".

Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He called me over and told me that he was glad to see that young people still had values. We are now good friends. I still don't know who wrote that very first quote, but I'd like to say thank you to that unknown hero.

  • 12、Dead To Rights

As the world marks (纪念) the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism, a moving Chinese film, Dead To Rights (officially titled in English, known in Chinese as《南京照相馆》), gives us a special look at history. Unlike traditional war movies that focus on battlefields, it tells a story through a small photo studio during the 1937 Nanjing Massacre.

In the fallen city, ordinary people find safety in Jixiang Photo Studio. One of them is a postman, played by Liu Haoran. He pretends to be an apprentice. Forced to develop films for Japanese soldiers, he accidentally finds photos that show their cruel crimes. At first, they fight just to stay alive—but soon, this becomes a mission (任务) to guard the truth. They promise to pass on this solid evidence, no matter what.

Dead To Rights tries something new with its "small people witnessing big history" story. It turns national pain into a shared memory on screen. Its success comes not only from careful technical work. Realistic sets, the local dialect (方言) and other small but meaningful details all play a part. More importantly, it connects with people's feelings. When the studio owner Lao Jin shouts," Every inch of our beautiful land must never be given up," or when modern Nanjing streets are intercut (镜头切换) with wartime ruins, viewers see not just history coming to life like a photo, but a symbol of a strong, unbroken civilization (文明).

The film does not show big war scenes. Instead, it uses the photo studio to show how ordinary people wake up and fight back in the big waves of history. It makes audiences feel deeply the great sacrifices (牺牲) our ancestors made to protect truth and dignity. It is a serious look back and a deep thought on history. This is also proof of why it is called Dead To Rights—the solid evidence (证据), kept safe by courage, always reminds us to remember the past and cherish (珍惜) today's peace.

(1)、Why does the postman pretend to be an apprentice?
A、To learn photo-taking skills. B、To work for Japanese soldiers. C、To find a safe place to hide. D、To take photos of crimes.
(2)、The phrase "fight just to stay alive" in Paragraph 2 means the people ________.
A、wanted to live through the hard time B、tried to win a big fight C、planned to take back their city D、hoped to become brave fighters
(3)、What helps Dead To Rights succeed according to the passage?
A、Only realistic sets and local dialects. B、Big war scenes and famous actors. C、Technical work and emotional connection. D、Sad stories and old photos.
(4)、When modern Nanjing streets are intercut with wartime ruins, viewers can feel ________.
A、how fast Nanjing has changed B、the unbroken spirit of the civilization C、why the war started D、what life was like in the past

they care about me, sometimes I feel quite nervous. Last Sunday, my friends invited me to play soccer, but my parents (refuse). They wanted me to go to animal hospital to volunteer. They said it was important to learn to care for others. In the end, I went. I spent many hours (look) after the animals there. Yesterday, I wanted to go to the movies with my friends after school. But my mom said I must help housework first. She was cleaning the living room and she asked    (I) to sweep the floor. I did it (angry). I told her I was too tired. She got mad at me. Now, we aren't talking to each other. I know she is busy and tired and I know it's not only the (parent) job to do the housework at home. But I also need some free time (relax).

(play) with friends is a good way to relax. And volunteering at the animal hospital is also something I enjoy doing. But I don't like it when they always decide everything for me. Do you think I'm right?

    What should I do?

I'm looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards.

A few years later, I saw the only twig started to die. The lower branches (树枝) became poor. Only the top was still green. I did my best to save it, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I wondered if it would be better to just cut it down. However, I saw something moving on the branches. It was a robin (知更鸟) building its home there! I was surprised when I looked at it. I thought maybe this tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or beautiful, but it still gave a bird a home. It made me know that nothing is meaningless. Until we die, we still have things to do, love to give, and joy to share.

Many birds fly from one place to another. Most of the time, they live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands. They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and want to rest on these plants. The birds do not know there is glass between them and the plants.

Some birds fly at night. They use the moon and stars to help guide them in the right direction. Tall buildings with lights on at night can confuse (迷惑) the birds. The birds see the light, but they cannot tell that the light is coming from inside a building. They fly toward the light and crash into a building. On many mornings, there might be several dead birds lying on the ground.

Many office buildings now turn off their lights at night. This helps reduce the number of birds that fly into buildings and it also helps save energy.
