Linda:  I'm 11 years old. I like nature very much. I always read books about nature, especially books about the sea. I can know many interesting stories about the sea through reading books such as how the sea came into being(形成), how the sea animals live and how they find food.

Tony: I'm 20. I often read medicine book, because my dream is to be a doctor. Besides medicine books, I like to read some stories about famous people. Their great stories can cheer me up when I feel a little bored and upset.

Harry:  I'm 35 years old. I work in a middle school. I like reading, and I also like to translate(翻译) some English short stories into Chinese. It's interesting. What's more, I can improve my understanding of both English and Chinese.

David:  I'm 28. I'm very busy every day. With too much work, my health is poor, especially my stomach. To keep fit, I do more sports every day. And doctors told me to eat healthily.

Lucy:  I'm 7 years old. Today is my first day to go to school. My Chinese teacher asks us to buy a book about handwriting(书法). She wants us to practice our handwriting.

Can dogs tell the time with their noses? According to a recent study, it may be true. Dogs have been known to pick up smells that humans can't, but they may also be able to tell the time by using their noses.

"As each day has a new smell, your dog can notice these changes," explains a dog expert and university teacher, Professor Alexandra Horowitz. The dog expert talks about the idea in her new book Being a Dog: Following the Dog into a World of Smell.

Most humans usually experience the world with their eyes. For dogs, their world is based on smells. Dogs are often trained to search for drugs, explosives, and dead bodies with their noses.

The dog expert believes that dogs can notice very small changes in smells during the day, giving them a feeling to judge(判断) the time. "Smells in a room change as the day goes on. Hot air rises, and it usually rises along the walls and will rise to the ceiling and go to the center of the room and drop," Alexandra explains." The dog, I think, can smell time through the movement of the air in the room," she adds.

This could explain why a dog can tell when its owner is expected to return home. If a smart dog is able to notice the changes in its owner's home after he or she leaves the house, it may be able to predict when its owner is expected to come back.

In a modern world where time is money, how have our reading habits been influenced? Are we reading more quickly or do we prefer to read short passages? The answer perhaps lies in the kind of text you're reading.

When we're reading online, we read quickly to search what we want. Does this mean that as readers we now have far less patience than we used to? Not necessarily. Much of this activity is actually skimming or scanning to check whether something is useful or interesting and whether we want to read on. We'll slow down and take a bit longer to properly read the text if the headline catches our eyes.

For those writing for an online environment, this means finding more useful ways of catching the readers' eyes. For example, putting the key information at the very beginning makes it more likely that the time-poor website visitors will find what they want.

But what about when we're reading literature(文学), are the rules still the same? The average reader works their way through a piece of an article at no more than about 250—300 words per minute, which is generally a page of text. If you try to read through a novel more quickly, then you start to lose a lot of what makes literature such a pleasure. When we read for pleasure, we are much less focused on picking out useful information or key words. Instead, the language itself is as important as the information mentioned. The longer you spend reading a passage, the more vivid(生动) a picture you create in your mind.

Sometimes an escape(逃离) from the fast moving Internet Age is just what we need, so maybe it's time to slow down and lose yourself in a good book.

For years I went to school by bus, so I met many "familiar（熟悉的）" strangers. We took the same bus but didn't know each other's names. I used to think it was impossible for us to be true friends. How wrong I was! Smiles from the "nameless" people have changed my thoughts. 

The first time on the bus, I saw different faces, we met, greeted and cold faces turned into smiling faces. As days went on, we chatted like old friends. 

But I felt it a pity that I was unable to set up the same friendship with a silent girl in the front of the bus. Her old clothing suggested（暗示）that she didn't have much money, but she always took a glass of water for the driver. I guessed she was a kind girl. But why did she sit in silence instead of talking with us? Why did she never reply to our friendly greetings? Couldn't she smile?

Then, one evening, I got the answer. I walked to the park nearby and found the girl sitting alone under a tree, lonely and sad. I greeted her with the same warm smile that I had shown to her all these months, but this time her face turned red with a shy smile. As soon as she began her first words, I understood why she hadn't spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her. 

I learned her story. Her parents worked hard somewhere. She lived with her disabled grandparents. She said, "I can't express myself very well. Most of the time, I can't say what I want to say. I have no friends but. . . you always smile to me like an angel. . . so I also want to smile. "

That evening, we exchanged our names and we said goodbye like old friends. Smile is the key to opening the door of heart; it can break the cold walls in front of us.

Would you like to do something you like and help others at the same time? If your 1 is "yes", you must have an interest in voluntary work. There are many 2 of volunteering. Today I'd like to talk about three of them. 

Volunteering in developing countries

To travel to communities in the developing world to work on projects is becoming a 3 form of volunteering among young people. 4 include teaching English and helping poor children. International volunteering can usually give the volunteers valuable skills, knowledge and the experience of a lifetime. 5 , some people can't accept volunteering in their communities. 

Environmental volunteering

To 6 our environment, volunteers organize many activities such as protecting 7 animals and educating others on the natural environment. The Giant Panda Conservation program in Xi'an and Sichuan, China, is a famous endangered animals protection program. The program in Sichuan 8 huge foreign support and volunteers. 

Volunteering in schools
