Nirmal Purja has set several world records after climbing the world's 14 highest mountains in less than seven months.

 Though he was born 1,600 meters above sea level, he didn't climb any scrious mountains until he was 29.

But Mr. Purja, now 36, was trained to be strong. He used to be a soldier in the British army, where he had special training for fighting in very cold weather. 

There are only 14 mountains in the world that are higher than 8,000 meters. Mr. Purja had already climbed several of them.  The old record for climbing the 14 mountains was seven years, ten months and six days. It was set by South Korean climber Kim Chang-ho in 2013.

Mr. Purja named his challenge "Project Possible".  On October 29, just a little more than six months after he started, Nirmal Purja had finished climbing the l4th mountain.

Though Mr. Purja completed his challenge unbelievably quickly, it wasn't easy. For example, during one day of climbing Shishapangma, Mr. Purja and his team climbed for l5 hours nonstop.

Photo-taking drone（无人机）

Spark is a camera drone. It can fly above your head and take photos. A Chinese company called DJI made it. It is very small. When folded, it is as small as a can of soda. Like other drones, you can control it with a remote control. But you can also control it with hand gestures.

This is the coolest part. Put your hand close to your face. Spark is ready to take a photo of you when its red light flashes. Then, put your hand down. After a few seconds, the photo is taken. With hand gestures, taking photos is very convenient.

Hospital robot Moxi

Nurses are busy with many things during atypical workday. It can be hard for nurses to make time for their most important task: interacting（互动）with their patients. The company Diligent Robotics has built a hospital robot called Moxi. It can help nurses do non-patient-facing tasks so that they have more time for patient care.

Moxi has an arm to reach and a gripper（抓爪）to pick up things. It can move around easily. It is able lo finish tasks one by one on its own. After testing Moxi for one year, the company plans to send Moxi to more US hospitals by the end of 2020.

Smart hand

People use artificial intelligence（AI）in many ways. The company Brain Robotics used it to make a smart prosthetic（假体的）hand. With its AI software, the hand can "learn" from its user and vice versa（反之亦然）. This kind of learning helps the hand work like a real hand. The more it is used, the more lifelike it will be.

The hand is cheaper than other prosthetic hands thanks to the use of 3D printing. Each hand is printed to fit the user correctly. Users don't have to pay for extra doctor visits.

Inventions have played a crucial role in human history. The wheel, one of the earliest inventions, made it easier to transport goods. The printing press, invented by Gutenberg, changed the way information was spread. It allowed books to be printed in large numbers, making knowledge more accessible. The steam engine was another important invention that led to the Industrial Revolution. It transformed manufacturing and transportation. In modern times, inventions like the computer and the Internet have revolutionized communication and information sharing. These inventions have not only made our lives more convenient but also changed the way we work and interact with each other.

Benjamin Franklin came into the world on January 17, 1706. The family was a big one with several children. Ben went to school when he was 8. Although he did well in his study, there was not enough money for his education. So he left school after two years. But he never stopped learning. In 1742, he invented the famous Franklin stove.

Before Ben invented the Franklin stove, people heated their homes with fire in the traditional fireplace (壁炉). Using such kind of fireplace was not good because most of the heat went into the chimney (烟囱). And it was also dangerous because the fire in the fireplace could set the house on fire. Ben came up with the idea of using the baffle (折流板) system to make the heat travel throughout the stove. The Franklin stove used less wood and was safer to heat the room.

What's more, Ben was interested in electricity. After many years of hard work, he finally had a plan to prove (证明) that lightning was electricity and he was successful at last in the kite experiment.

Although he had many inventions in life, he never kept them to himself. He wanted to share them with people all over the world.

William grew up in a poor family in Africa. His family lived in a village with no 1 . At night, they used oil lamps for light. However, oil was too expensive for his parents to afford (购买).

The giant panda is a national treasure of China. It is famous  a living fossil. Most pandas have black-and-white fur. They look very cute and have higher  (intelligent) than many animals. They can follow the zookeepers'  (instruction) without difficulty. That's why almost everyone  (like) them. 

Giant pandas love eating bamboo best. But they also enjoy other food, including birds, fish  some small animals. A panda at  (born) only weighs about 120 grams, while a grown-up panda's weight can rise up to about 120 kilograms. 

Wild giant pandas live in cool and wet bamboo forests of central and western China, high up in the mountains. They show great ability to climb trees from  early age. 

The living giant panda was  (one) found in Sichuan by a Frenchman. Because giant pandas were in danger of  (die) out, they were on the list of the endangered species. Luckily, in 2016,  (science) changed the level of giant pandas on the list. It's China's success in rebuilding bamboo forests.
