Talk to people you disagree with
Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play or which restaurant makes the best pizza. Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how.
Let them know that you're paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you're listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. You can start by saying, "OK. I understand you. You are saying…"
When someone has an opinion you don't agree with, don't pay too much attention to it. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like "stupid" "foolish" or "silly". Instead, focus on speaking calmly (沉着地). For example, you may begin with "I feel" or "I see this in another way".
If you have a strong opinion, it's better to stick to the facts instead of feelings. Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it's your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later.
If you find that you can't change the other person's mind, and they may not change yours. Still, look for the points you agree on. In the end, it's worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities.
A. Even if you disagree with someone, you can still listen to what they say.
B. You may also get a better understanding of each other's opinion.
C. If this happens to you, you'd better say sorry to your friends.
D. Sometimes you may disagree with your friends about more serious subjects.
E. Start by asking if you can share your opinion.
What will you do if you have disagreements with your friends?(No more than 15 words.)

Lightning usually destroys (破坏) trees it hits. But scientists have found an amazing tree. It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!
For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn't until about 100 years ago that such "super trees" were discovered. Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning's power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.
In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree, which had been struck by strong lightning. It wasn't badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.
Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2—6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.
These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx trees was struck twice in 5 years yet continued to grow well.
At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract (吸引) lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and grow better. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees' ability to carry electricity. They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.
(1)、What is special about the Dipteryx oleifera tree?A、It dies quickly after lightning strikes. B、It takes in nutrients directly from lightning. C、It grows better after being struck by lightning. D、It avoids lightning by hiding under other trees.(2)、What does the underlined word "handle" in Paragraph 3 mean?A、Mix up. B、Give out. C、Suffer from. D、Deal with.(3)、Why do Dipteryx oleifera trees attract lightning?A、To get more water from the sky. B、To kill nearby trees for growth. C、To become shorter and stronger. D、To protect other trees around them.(4)、What might scientists do next according to the text?A、Plant more Dipteryx oleifera trees. B、Study how trees attract lightning better. C、Find out where Dipteryx oleifera trees live. D、Look for more trees that can survive lightning. -

The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. The air buzzed (喧闹)—not with insects, but with voices, cameras, and the weight of something about to begin.
Roy's heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows (洞穴) of the owls.
No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy (破坏) their living area.
He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn't feel right.
He stepped up to the microphone (话筒).
"Excuse me," he said, voice shaking. "Before you dig…you should know the truth."
The crowd (人群) grew quiet.
"There are owls living here," Roy said. "They're small. They're scared. And if you build here, you'll destroy their homes."
Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, "How do you know that?"
"Because I saw them. I stood right there and watched them. They live here. They belong here. And they matter."
The manager stepped forward, "This is not your business, kid."
Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into something else—strength.
"It's my business. It's everyone's business. We can't just destroy what we don't see. Progress should not come at the cost of wonder," he said.
His hands stopped shaking. People in the crowd began whispering. One mother held her child's hand. A teacher nodded. Even the manager looked uncertain.
Roy didn't know what would happen next. But he did what he could. He spoke the truth.

Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake.
"How strange, how tall I am", said Alice. She looked down at her feet— they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn't get through the door. She sat down and had a good cry till there was a large pool all around her.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone that when he came near, she called out, "If you please, sir..." The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.
Alice picked up the fan, and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. "Dear, dear How strange all things are today I do wish to get out of the hall ____" she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass— she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan. She realised this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. "Things are worse," said the poor girl,"I was never so small as this. How can I get out?" As she said these words, she lost her footing and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water— her own tears.
Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.
"Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there's no harm in trying." So she swam up.

Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams. Yet now scientific study has made them real. Could other fairy tales come true someday?
Sleeping Beauty
Could anyone sleep for 100 years? Probably not. The daily cycle of sleep and waking is set in your body. But animals like bears can hibernate (冬眠) through the winter until it warms.
If scientists can work out how animals hibernate, maybe one day people could hibernate too. It would be great for astronauts to sleep through the long space journey. But hibernating animals still grow older, so a future Sleeping Beauty might wake up as a Sleeping Grandma.
Talk to Animals
Talking to animals isn't quite easy. But scientists are trying. Tiny cameras and microphones have collected thousands of hours of animal conversations. Powerful computer programs study animal sounds and match them with possible meanings. Soon they may let us talk back.
But there are still challenges. Many animals communicate with smells, body language, and sounds that humans can't hear. And animals don't think like people. So, when we think they're giving directions to the castle, they're more likely to be saying "This is my tree!"
Let Down Your Hair
Rapunzel lowers her long hair to let visitors in. But could hair really hold up a prince?
Surprisingly, yes! A scientific study has found out that a single hair can hold 3 ounces, the weight of a small tomato. And a common head has about 100,000 hairs. All those together could hold up a couple of elephants. A prince? No problem.
However, Rapunzel would also need a shorter tower. Human hair only grows a few feet long. The longest hair ever recorded is about 18 feet long—pretty short for a tower.
(1)、If astronauts could hibernate, they would ____.A、stop growing completely B、sleep through space travel C、need more food and water D、communicate with animals(2)、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A、Animals think like people in giving directions. B、Scientists have succeeded in talking back to animals. C、A common person's hair could hold up a giant panda. D、Rapunzel in the fairy tale has the longest hair in history.(3)、What is the main purpose of this passage?A、To discuss new inventions for space travel. B、To tell us how scientists influence fairy tales. C、To compare different animals' talking habits. D、To show scientific possibilities behind fairy tales. -

You might have had your keys a second ago, and now they're just gone! Before you get upset, take a deep breath. In this article, we'll teach you how to find lost objects (物品). With a little help from the experts, you may find those keys faster than you can say "lost".
Double-check where the object usually is. If there's a place where you usually leave the missing object, start there. Maybe you forgot that you put it back, or it's hidden under something nearby.
Sometimes, thinking about the last time you saw or used the object can help you. Consider everything you can remember—even something as silly as what you were eating or listening to could be helpful!
Look in the place where you last saw or had the object. Follow your memory to where you last remember using or seeing the lost object. Sit or stand in your exact position when you saw or had it last, and look around. Continue going through the actions of your memory until you find the object.
Ask for help from friends or family Reach out to a friend or family member in the same space as you and ask if they've seen the missing object.

Apple came out with its iPhone 17 on September 9th. The "Cosmic Orange" color of the Pro model has caught people's attention. This color is different from more common ones like white and black.
Colors are more than just visual (视觉的) effects. According to the American Marketing Association, bright colors can make a product seem better, even if the color doesn't actually change how the product works.
Why is this? According to an article from the University of Leeds, when light enters our eyes, special cells at the back of our eyes react (反应) to different colors and send signals (信号) to the brain. Most signals go to the visual cortex (视觉皮层), where we see pictures. But some are sent to another part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). This part controls things in our body, such as temperature and mood.
So this means colors can change how our bodies feel. For example, blue light can make our blood flow and heartbeat slow down. It can also lower our blood pressure and help us relax, according to the University of Derby in the UK. Orange, on the other hand, wakes up our senses, making it great for catching attention.
However, no color has been shown to increase sales more than others, said researchers at the University of Southern California in the US. Still, successful brands often use colors to create their images. For example, Coca-Cola uses red because it increases heart rate and improves appetite (食欲).
(1)、Why can colors change how we feel?A、They react to special cells in our eyes. B、They go directly to the brain's visual cortex. C、They make the brain produce more signals. D、They excite not just the visual cortex.(2)、How does blue light influence people?A、It wakes up their senses. B、It increases heart rate. C、It helps them relax. D、It makes them feel hungry.(3)、Why does Coca-Cola use red as its brand color?A、To make people feel hot. B、To help people find it easily. C、To build a brand image. D、To control the whole market.(4)、What can we infer from the passage about color and sales?A、Bright colors are the key to higher sales. B、No color is sure to increase sales most. C、Colors can change how products work. D、Blue should not be used for products. -

Sept 27th is World Tourism Day. You might also be getting ready to take a trip with your family during the coming National Day holiday. Will it be a "special forces-style trip", a "laid-back tourism (摆烂式旅游) ", or a "healing retreat (疗愈之旅) "? The choices seem never-ending.
But did you know that not long ago, many Chinese people traveled by just following tour guides and taking photos? So why have so many new travel ways appeared in just a few years?
There are many reasons. For one, young people don't like fixed plans anymore. They prefer to explore less-visited places, Xinhua reported. Some even go to small towns for music festivals or comic shows, choosing personal interests over popular places.
Many also start trips without any plans, enjoying surprises along the way. On Xiaohongshu, one person wrote, "Arriving in Datong, Shanxi, in an hour. Any suggestions for relaxed dining and activities?" A growing focus on feelings also plays a role, according to People's Daily. "Just visiting" is not enough anymore. People want immersive experiences, like visiting local people's homes, joining in local activities or relaxing by a campfire.
At the same time businesses and local governments are also introducing different policies to attract tourists. Hainan Province said it would give tourists lower prices on transport, accommodation and more, CCTV News reported. Companies are also organizing factory visits, turning good and fast production lines into tech museums and places of fun for families. The rise in the popularity of factory visits shows the growth of Chinese brands and smart production in China, Xinhua said.
China's tourism market is still changing quickly. Will you be the one to start the next trend (潮流)?

It was her job to catch the fish and give it to its owner so they could make their wishes. Sakura was born a wish-fisher, just like her mother, but she really wanted adventures. Sakura hoped that she'd find her own fish and wish for something exciting. One day, Sakura didn't catch a single fish. Where were all the wish fish? A week later, there were still no fish. Instead, she found a big ship. She climbed onto the ship and found a heavy net full of wish fish dragging behind the ship.
"Why are you stealing other people's wish fish?" Sakura shouted to the boy on the ship.
"I'm bored. I want to do something exciting. The wish fish can make my dream come true." He caught a fish and made a wish, "I wish to fly!"
The fish sparkled and the ship turned into a dragon! Sakura fell and landed in the river below. Suddenly, she saw something shiny. A wish fish! A wish could fix everything. But who did it belong to? If she used somebody else's wish, she would be as bad as the boy. Sakura grabbed the wish fish and closed her eyes. A face slowly formed in her mind…her own face! If Sakura used her wish to fix things, she might never get another chance to wish for adventure. But she also knew there was only one right thing to do. Sakura smiled and made up her mind, " ▲ "
The fish sparkled and the dragon disappeared. The boy fell into the water. So did the wish fish. The boy looked at Sakura and understood his mistake. Together, they watched the wish fish swim freely in the river. At that moment, Sakura realized her job was the greatest adventure of all.
"How about catching the wish fish with me?" Sakura said. From that day on, the boy often volunteered to help Sakura, finding more joy in helping others.

The book came out more than 200 years ago, but it is still popular with young kids now.
Reviews from the US
Elizabeth Hall★★★★★ Great food for the curious mind
It's a great book to have in libraries and school classrooms and to introduce students to the history of inventions. My students and I enjoy it a lot.
Gary the grandpa★★★★★ A really interesting book
My 6-year-old granddaughter and 5-year-old grandson both love it. They are fascinated by the facts in the book and the clever way in which they are presented.
Helen★★★★☆ Not exactly what I expected.
It interests my 6-year-old son. But I have to say it does not include some important inventions like the computer.
