Training for a marathon（马拉松）requires careful preparation. There are steady（稳定的）, gradual（逐步的） increases in the length of the runs.

 No one can say which brand will work best for you, so you have to rely on the feel of each pair on your feet. When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to check if they really suit your feet. Also, pay attention to your general health.  Besides, you should stretch（拉伸）at least ten minutes before each run to prevent injuries.

During the first week, do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day.  Relaxation is also important.

But during the next week set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run. Try to run a little farther each day. 

After two weeks, start timing（计时）yourself.  You can set up a timetable for the remaining weeks before the race.

Mrs. Rachel Lynde was a curious woman. She knew everything about Avonlea (艾凡莉小镇). Mrs. Rachel lived in a part of Avonlea called Lynde's Hollow (谷). She saw everyone coming into town and everyone going out. Mrs. Rachel was more curious than most people but she was also very helpful.

Today she was very curious about Matthew Cuthbert. Matthew was dressed in his best clothes and he was driving his horse and buggy(小马车) past her house.

Mrs. Rachel knocked on the kitchen door and went into the house. The kitchen at Green Gables was a nice room but it was too tidy. Marilla Cuthbert was in her chair knitting (编织) and the table behind her was set for supper.

There were three plates on the table. Mrs. Rachel was very confused.

"Good evening, Rachel," Marilla said kindly."Come in and sit down. How is your family?" 

Marilla was a tall, thin woman. She had dark hair that she always wore in a bun (盘成发). She looked like a severe woman but her mouth was soft. Maybe she laughed sometimes. The women were very different but they were friends.

"We' re all quite well," said Mrs. Rachel."But I thought that you weren't well because I saw Matthew leaving today. Was he going to the doctor's?" Marilla replied patiently."Oh, no, we' re quite well. Matthew went to Bright River. We' re getting a little boy from an orphanage (孤儿院) in Nova Scotia and he's coming on the train tonight."

Mrs. Rachel was so shocked that she was unable to speak for five seconds.

Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dreams and goals.

But why do you have dreams and goals, and you still end up with nothing? What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you'll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well, and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.

Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired of waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.

I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula: Dream→Believe→Act→Achieve

For me, action is the most important thing for success, and that's to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say,"I can't do it" and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However,"I'll try" creates wonders. Let's remember that there will be obstacles in our lives. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.

Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.

A Chinese student studying in the UK recently got a funny email from her old teacher. The email said,"I have left to knit(编织)sweaters for penguins in Antarctica. I no longer work for the school... until my penguin friends are happy." This email has spread quickly online, stressing a real and kind project.

The idea of making sweaters for penguins came from the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia. It started after a big oil spill（泄露）near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. The spill hurt many baby penguins. When covered in oil, the penguins tried to clean themselves, which could harm them. The oil also hurt their feathers, making it hard for them to swim or find food.

To help, the foundation asked knitters around the world to make sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters kept the penguins warm during cleaning and stopped them from eating the oil. The idea worked well. During another oil spill in 2001,96 percent of the affected（受影响的）penguins were saved because of these sweaters.

However, some people wondered if the sweaters were good for the penguins. They worried that the sweaters might put more stress on the birds' bodies. The foundation explained that the sweaters are only used for a short time and are taken off once the penguins get better.

To make sure the penguins are safe and comfortable, the foundation gives clear instructions to knitters. For example, the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm long, 12 cm wide across the body, and 11 cm wide at the bottom. This way, the penguins stay both protected and relaxed.

Once a young man was asked to paint a boat of a rich man. While painting, he 1 a small hole in the ship's hull（船体）and quietly fixed it. After finishing his work, the young man got paid and left.

*Be Open-minded 

Keep an open mind when you meet something that seems strange or different from your culture. What may appear unusual to you might be a normal part of daily life for others. Asking questions in a polite way not only helps you learn but also shows that you respect their culture.

*Accept and Be Flexible (灵活的) 

Sometimes, you may need to accept the customs of the place you're visiting or living in. This doesn't mean you have to give up your own culture, but being flexible can help you fit in and show respect. For example, if you're in a country where it's normal to take off your shoes before entering someone's home, follow it even if it's not common in your country.
