Imagine holding a piece of wood that tells an ancient story—this is the magic of Chinese woodcarving! Artists turn ordinary wood into great treasures. 

When did Chinese people start woodcarving? 

 It became very popular in the Tang and Song Dynasties. People used it to decorate temples, furniture, and palaces. The designs usually included flowers, animals, and characters from Chinese stories. Some old woodcarvings are now in museums. 

Artists use special tools like knives, chisels (凿子), and hammers (锤子). They work with different types of wood. First, they draw a design on the wood. Then, they cut and shape it carefully. Finally, they make it smooth and shiny. Good wood carvers need years of practice. 

What is woodcarving like today? 

 Some artists make traditional designs, while others create modern art. What's more, many young people are interested in woodcarving and try to learn it to keep the tradition alive. 

Chinese woodcarving is both useful and beautiful.  Next time you see a piece of woodcarving, remember its long history and the hard work behind it! 

Do you know Chuanjiang boating songs? Can you sing them? The boating songs are a kind of folk music. They are the intangible cultural heritages (非物质文化遗产) and a symbol of Chongqing. 

Do you know the history of the songs? In the past, the boatmen were poor and they had a hard life, so they pulled the boats to make a living. At that time pulling boats wasn't an easy job for them. The river ran too quickly for boats, so it was difficult for them to work well. 

What's more, to make sure boatmen could move the boats in the same way, they sang something when pulling the boats. When they sang the songs, they felt more excited and they were full of power to move the boats. Later, these songs became more popular, and people called them Chuanjiang boating songs or Chuanjiang Haozi. This is the history of the songs. 

____When the boatmen went upstream (向上游), they sang Shangshui Haozi. The voice was strong like a tiger. The job needed a lot of power and they would feel tired, so they sang Haozi to pull the boat more easily. When they went downstream, they sang Xiashui Haozi. Because the river ran too quickly, it was dangerous and difficult. They sang together to cheer themselves up. 

What are the spirits behind Chuanjiang boating songs? Chuanjiang boating songs have great meaning to people in Chongqing. They also tell us the importance of teamwork. They are the songs of boatmen to fight against hard life. The strong voice shows that they never give up when they face difficulties. The songs help people be stronger, braver and more powerful. 

Taipingnijiaojiao is a clay toy, but it can be used as a whistle (哨子). It is a traditional toy from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It has a history of more than 1, 000 years. 

Taipingnijiaojiao is made of the mud from the local mountain. It takes more than ten steps to make the clay toy, and the key step is to knead (捏) it with your hands. You can knead the clay toy into any shape, like animals and plants. The blowhole is the most difficult part to make, for the size of the blowhole makes a difference to the sound. 

About 20 years ago, Zhou Baokang first noticed Taipingnijiaojiao during a temple fair (庙会) in Huashan Village, Zhenjiang. He soon became interested in it. He later learned from local artists how to make the toys himself. Now he is an inheritor (传承人) of the Taipingnijiaojiao art form. 

Zhou loves to make Taipingnijiaojiao in the shape of animals because there is great space (空间) to create. Without drawing any drafts (草图), you can turn some mud into the thing you want. He makes Taipingnijiaojiao for the Chinese animal sign (生肖) of each year. For example, when he was making tigers, he tried to show the spirit of the king of animals through exaggerated (夸张的) details, like big mouths and sharp teeth. 

Zhou works hard to pass on his skills. He teaches kids to make the toy at school. Besides, he opens a folk art museum to show the toy. "Taipingnijiaojiao is a small toy that carries traditional culture. We should pass it down, " Zhou said. 

One day, I went to visit my grandparents' village. As I walked around, I came across a little shop where an old man was working with paper. He used 1 to cut out beautiful shapes like flowers and animals 2 red paper. It was like magic (魔法)! I was amazed by how3 he was at it. 

Then, I heard music and saw a group of people. They were using puppets (木偶) to tell stories about brave heroes. It was so fun to 4  . 

I also saw a long, colourful dragon dancing through the air. Everyone was having fun. The dragon brings luck and 5 to the village. 

Feeling interested, I went to a 6 to learn more about Chinese folk art. There, I saw paintings on silk, pottery with fancy designs, and even embroidery on clothes. Every piece was special and told a story of 7 own. 

One thing that really caught my 8 was a silk painting of a beautiful mountain. The colours were so bright and the picture made me feel like I was there. I learned that silk paintings are not just pretty, they 9 help keep important stories and traditions alive. 

After that, I understood that Chinese folk art is not just about looking at pretty things. It's a way for people to 10 their stories, ideas, and values to younger people. 

I'm so glad I got to see all these wonderful things. It made me know how 11  the people who made these art forms are. 

Now, I want to learn more about Chinese folk art and maybe even 12  to make something 13  one day. Because everyone has a story to 14  , and Chinese folk art is a great way to share it.

Recently, a group of young people have started taking up their mothers' old hobby—crocheting（钩织）。

Mo Zai, 22, is a great fan of crocheting. Four years ago, she decided to try the hobby. To her surprise, this opened up a new world for her. Starting with a blue cup mat（杯垫）, she then moved on to small toys, sweaters and more.

Research has shown that craft activities make people focus on（专注）what they are doing. They also make people happy after finishing them. In this way, they can help people with stress（压力）。

Many years ago, crocheting was a thing for mothers. But now it has nothing to do with gender（性别）or age. A young man who called himself" Professor Mai" was introduced to crocheting while studying for his PhD in London. Sitting in the yarn（纱线）store and making his pieces on a soft sofa, he feels the warmth held in the pieces. "This is just a hobby to relax, " he told The Paper. 

These young crochet lovers now call themselves" the weaver guys and girls （织男织女）"for fun. Through handicraft activities, they are finding a true love for life. 

In the State of Zheng, there was a man. He wanted (go) to the town to buy a new pair of shoes.

Someone couldn't understand and asked(he), "Don't you have feet with you? I think what you need to do is only try on new shoes with your own feet. You really needn't go back home (bring) the measurement. "

The man still said, "I think the measurement is (good) than my own feet. "
