Me: Hello, Television Viewers! I am Aziza Bellamy, and thanks for watching. I want to especially thank you, Ms. Bertha, for agreeing to this interview on live television. It's a pleasure to meet you, the first-known trans-galactic(跨银河系的) visitor to Earth. Now, I understand that you are from a planet called Zadernol?

Bertha: Just call me Miss Bertha or Bertha. 

Me: Okay, sorry about that. So, you' ve been on Earth for about a week now. What have been your biggest disappointments or challenges so far?

Bertha: It's not the worst planet I' ve ever been to. Mercury(水星) was much worse. But the aliens—oops, I mean humans, have been unkind. The family I'm staying with, for example, were nice at first. But now they roll their eyes whenever I open my mouth to say anything. They' re not interested in any of my stories. And I think they may be trying to avoid me. Worst of all, they make me wash my own dishes and bathe myself. They' re so rude. 

Me: Oh, um. . . wow. That's just. . . 

Bertha:I am used to having high standards when I choose where to stay. I have stayed with presidents on other planets. And they all adored(崇拜) me and begged me not to leave. But I gave this human family a chance to host me. I mean, really, they should be grateful that I selected them to wash my clothes and cook my meals and entertain(款待) me. 

Me: Well, what you' re saying is surprising, Bertha. Do you think it's possible that this family just wants you to be a good guest?

Bertha: Why are you not agreeing with me? If you were smarter, you'd agree with me. Everyone on Zadernol is smarter than the smartest person on Earth. Earth is below me. 

Me: You know what, Bertha? I'm starting to see why you' re so unhappy here on Earth. You' re just a boastful(自夸的), spoiled alien. 

After the birth of my second child, I got a job at a restaurant. Having worked with an experienced waitress for a few months, I was 1 to wait tables on my own. All went 2 that first week. When Saturday night came, I was luckily given the table not far from the kitchen. 3 , I still felt it a little hard to carry the heavy trays(托盘). 

Before I knew it, the restaurant was full of people. I moved slowly, minding every step. I remember how 4 I was when I saw the tray stand(支架) near the tables; it looked different from the one I was 5 on. It had nice handles, which made it 6 to move around. I was pleased with everything and began to believe I was natural at this job. 

Then, an old man came to me and said, "Excuse me, dear, my wife and I love watching you work. It seems your tray stand has been very 7 to you, but we are getting ready to leave now, and my wife needs her 8 back. "

At first his idea did not get across. "What was he talking about?" Then, I got it. I had set my trays on his wife's orthopedic walker(助步器). I stood frozen as ice, but my face was 9 . I wanted to get into a hole and hide. 

Since then, I have learned from many mistakes such as the one I just 10 , I have learned to be more careful and not to be sure of myself. 

Pupils spend more time at school than they spend with their parents. So communication between them can be difficult. Parents spend the whole day  work and they  come  home  in  the  evening.  Then  they  hardly talk  with  or pay  attention  to   children. And it will be worse  parents work in another town. Parents and children only spend weekends together. This is bad because we know how important  communication  is  to  people,  especially  to  children.   To  grow  up  (healthy), children need to learn (communication). That is why I think school is more important in forming (塑造)(children)characters.

First, school is a place where children can learn how to read and write. They can have good conversations learn good manners from teachers. School is also the place where they can meet other pupils and learn how to  communicate with  (other).

(two), children can find out what it means to work in a team every day. Teachers show children how important it is to get information. The things children learn at school help them make important (decide) in later life.

Make a list

Save as much as you can

There is an old saying,"Money doesn't grow on trees." Wallets sometimes might not be the best place to save as they tempt(诱惑) you into spending your money. Get a piggy bank or ask your parents to start a savings account for you. Someday when you look back, you' ll get a strong sense of achievement by saving so much by yourself!.

A student is studying British English. He wonders: Can I have a talk with Americans?Can they catch me? Learners of English often ask-what are the differences between British English and American English? How important are these differences?

Certainly, there are some differences between British English and American English.There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say"in hospital" and"Have you a pen?" Americans"in the hospital" and"Do you have a pen?"Pronunciation(发音) is sometimes different. Americans usually sound the"r" in words like"car" and"farm". Some speakers of British English do not sound the"r" in these words.There are differences between British English and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example,"colour" and"honour" are British English spellings."Color" and"honor" are American English spellings.

These differences are in grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary. However,they are not important. For the most part, British English and American English are the same language.

Do you yawn(打哈欠)? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they know many facts about yawning.

We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.

Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? Scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.

Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles(肌肉) in your face, mouth,and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.

In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.

Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.

A young woman was driving alone through the country. It 1 dark and raining.Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding her hand out as if she needed a lift. She stopped the car and opened the door.

A new library opened last month in Norway. But it may be a little hard for you to visit.It is 150 meters under the ground. It is inside  old mine(矿井) on the island of Svalbard. The island is about 1,000 km away  the North Pole(北极).

The library is called The World Arctic Archive. In fact, it's not (make)for people to visit. It is (protect) the world's most important books from(nature) disasters(灾害) and wars. Some people also call (its) the"doomsday(世界末日) library".

According to the company that (build) the library, Svalbard was the best place to build it."Deep in the permafrost(永冻土层), it's about minus 10 (degree)," the company told The Verge."In this environment, the books can last for(much) than 500 years."

So far, three countries-Norway, Mexico and Brazil (put) books in the library. The Brazilian Constitution(宪法) is one of the books.

Being an orphan(孤儿) is difficult; however, being an animal orphan can be deadly.

This season, the Volunteers for Wildlife Rehabilitation(野生康复) Center in Locust Valley took in six young red-tailed hawks (鹰). If we could get these birds back with their parents, they would have a better chance of surviving. However, we couldn't find their nests or parents.

But there was another way to help them: foster(寄养的) parenting. But we must place the orphans with other adult pairs before nesting season ended in early July. It's not always easy. Hawk nests are often 40 or 50 feet high in trees. What's more, not all birds will accept foster chicks. So we paid close attention to the research by experts before moving chicks.

That day, we happily knew of a nest that was still active at Bethpage State Park! There was one chick in the nest. And the young bird was going to fly but was still in the nest and being fed.

So we decided to move one of our orphan birds. I drove the bucket truck to the nest tree;Lauren, my workmate, held our chick. And up we three went in the bucket. We worked fast,for the wild parents might be back soon, and the female hawk could be aggressive!

To make sure the adults had accepted their new child, I came by later in the day and the next morning. Oh, they had! The chick was just fed up and the adult female hawk sat nearby,staring at me closely.

The results were so encouraging and we tried it again! A week later , we successfully placed another chick in the same nest.

The adult hawks now had three children to care for, one theirs and two foster chicks. It was heartwarming to see the two animal orphans living in their new loving family!

One of your classmates is suddenly having a nosebleed. What can you do at this moment?If you know some first-aid skills, you can ask him or her to sit down and press the sides of his nose after putting his head down. If the bleeding doesn't stop after five or six minutes,find your teacher for help. Learning first-aid skills is beneficial because it can help you save someone's life in dangerous situations.

However, in China, fewer than one percent of adults have first-aid skills. So the Ministry of Education (MOE) has asked all schools in China to teach students first-aid skills,including CPR training. Then how does CPR help? CPR is a lifesaving skill used in many dangerous situations when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. If you do CPR correctly within the first four to six minutes, the person who is in danger may remain alive.Even when you' re unsure how to do CPR, it's always better to try than to do nothing. The difference between doing something and doing nothing could save someone's life.▲.

A survey from the Development Research Center of the State Council shows that 64.6%of schools already have these classes. However, the results are not good. We hope the results in the future will be better if students take it seriously.

I remember the year when I was seven years old. I 1 a pretty hair clip from a girl in my dance class. My 2 found the shiny clip was not bought by them. So they sat me down on the floor of our study and explained 3 what I had done was wrong. What a bad end I would come to if I became a thief—— people would not trust me any more.

Once upon a time, there was a king. He only had one leg and one eye,  but he was very smart and kind. Everyone lived  happy and healthy life because of the king.One day, the king was walking through the palace hallway and saw the (paint) of his ancestors(祖先). He thought that one day his children (will)also walk in the same hallway and remember all the ancestors through these pictures. He wanted his children (remember) him, too. So he invited many famous artists to his palace.

All of the artists began to think about the (king) physical disabilities(生理缺陷). How could his painting be made very beautiful? It was not possible. They weren't sure  his painting would be like. So one by one, they all started to(polite) refuse to make a painting of the king.

But suddenly one artist raised (he) hand and said he could make a very nice painting of the king. When the artist showed the painting, everyone (be)shocked. In the painting, the king was sitting on a horse, on the one-leg side, holding his bow(弓箭) and aiming(瞄准) something with his one eye (close). The king was very happy and gave him lots of money.

Are you a happy person most of the time? Or do you easily get angry sometimes?It is usually believed that both genes (基因 ) and environment may affect people's temperaments in different ways. But now scientists have found that the season of birth also plays a role.

Scientists from Budapest, Hungary, studied 400 university students. In the study, the students needed to finish a questionnaire (问卷). From the questionnaire, scientists found that the students always answered something like"My mood often changes for no reason" and"I love to deal with new projects, even if it is risky".

They discovered that people born in summer easily change between sad and happy moods compared to people born in winter. The study also found that those born in autumn less probably had a mood of sadness which may easily drive them to cry, while those born in winter were not easier to be angry.

Scientists said that this was probably because the seasons had an influence on certain chemicals in the human body.

Many people believe that light bulbs were invented by Thomas Edison. Is that true?Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio, USA. In school, Edison was often absent-minded,and his teacher did not think that he was very smart. In 1854 his family moved to Port Huron,Michigan, where young Edison sold candy and newspapers on trains from Port Huron to Detroit. These early sales experiences led Edison to discover his talents as a businessman and to found fourteen companies, including General Electric, which still exists today.

Edison started his career as an inventor in Newark, New Jersey. In 1878 Edison formed the Edison Electric Light Company. During his first public demonstration(展示) of his incandescent light(白炽灯) bulb on December 31,1879, he said,"We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles." Light bulbs were not the only things Edison worked on. He also built the first industrial research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey.There, Edison worked on the telephone, phonograph(留声机), electric railway, and electric lighting.

However, Edison did not invent many of the things he is said to have invented. He only improved them so that they could be sold to the public. He did not invent the electric light bulb, either. He did, however, start the first company that made and sold electric light bulbs.The only major invention that he actually did invent was the phonograph. It was his invention of the phonograph in 1877 that made him famous, and he became known as The Wizard of Menio Park(门洛帕克的奇才), New Jersey.

Dubai is a city of big business, expensive hotels, skyscrapers(摩天楼), and shopping malls. In the early 20th century, Dubai was a successful trading port. People from the world stopped in Dubai to do business. But it was still a small city, and most people lived as fishermen and businessmen. Then in 1966, oil was discovered. This brought a lot of money into the area, and soon Dubai began to change.

Today Dubai is one of the world's most important business centers. In fact, each year the city gets its money mainly from business, not oil.

Recently Dubai has attracted more and more visitors from abroad. They come to relax on its beaches, and every year, millions of people visit just to go shopping!

Dubai is also one of the world's fastest growing cities. Many tall buildings are built in months. The city also has many man-made islands. One of these, the Palm Jumeirah, is like a palm tree(棕榈树) and is very beautiful.

The city is still an amazing mix (混合体) of people from different countries. The people from 150 countries live and work in Dubai, and foreigners now outnumber Dubai natives(本地人) by eight to one!

Many people welcome the city's growth. But an increasing number of Dubai natives worry about the speed of change. As a Dubai native says,"We must always remember where we came from. Our kids must know we worked very, very hard to get where we are now, and there's a lot more work to do."

My son Daniel began surfing at the age of 

13. Daniel's love for the ride was tested one unusual afternoon.

"Your son's been in an accident," the lifeguard(生员) reported to my husband Mike over the phone hurriedly."1 he came up to the top of the water, the point of the board was headed toward his eye."

I was 2 home from a meeting while Daniel's eye was being stitched(缝). Mike 3 drove to the airport after they left the doctors' office. He greeted 4 at the gate while Daniel was waiting in the car."Daniel?" I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been terrible that day.

I gave in. Daniel was just a boy with deep 10 for surfing. Now he is among the top surfers in the world.

A young painter completed a painting. To get (people) opinions about his painting skills, he put his painting at a (cross) on a street and put up a board, reading,"Gentlemen, I have painted this work. Since I'm new, I might have made some mistakes. Please put a cross  you see a mistake."

When he came back in the evening, he was shocked (see) that the whole painting was filled with crosses, He ran to his teacher and said,"It's useless."

The teacher said,"I' ll let you know that you are a great (art). Just paint the same painting again  give it to me."

Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the same painting at the same place. The teacher (take) out another board which read,"Gentlemen, Ihave painted this work. I might have made some mistakes. I have put a box with colors and(brush) just below. If you see a mistake, pick up  brush and correct it." Two days later, they came back to the place. The young painter was surprised to see that there was not a single correction.

You'd better remember not to judge yourself by someone else's criticism (批评) because you are the (good) judge to judge yourself.
