We are always using body language in our daily lives. When we talk with someone, we may use more body language than words. However, the same body language may mean different things in different countries. That's why people sometimes do not understand each other correctly.

Pointing to one part of the body can have different meanings in different cultures.For example, in the USA, people point to their heads when they think someone is clever. However, in Europe, it means"He or she is stupid or something is wrong with his or her head." In our Chinese culture, nodding our heads means"yes" and shaking our heads means"no". However, in some parts of India, Greece and Turkey, they mean opposite(相反的) things. In England or the USA, when you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb and the second finger while keeping the other three straight, it means"Everything is all right." However, if we do this in France or Belgium, it means"You' re worth zero." In Greece or Turkey, we should not make this gesture, as it is considered very rude.

The meaning of gestures can also change over time. In the 1960s, the"V" sign meant"peace". However, during World War II, it meant"victory". In Greece, it is an insulting sign. It is very impolite of you to make this gesture in front of a Greek woman.

Though the meaning of body language is different, there are some expressions having the same meaning throughout the world, such as smiling and crying.

Handshaking is a kind of silent language. As  expression of greeting when people meet or say goodbye to each other, it is a common manner on most social occasions (场合). However, it is sometimes difficult to know when to shake hands with others, so (learn) some basic handshake rules is quite important for everyone.

Who should offer his hand first? Generally speaking, the elder, the teacher, the female and the married should reach out their hands first. you have to shake hands with more than one person, you should shake hands in turn from the senior and leader to the junior, from the (near) to the farthest. When the host (meet) the guest, the host should reach out his hand first to show his welcome. However, it's the guest who should offer his hand first when they say goodbye. What's more, if someone offers you their hand, you must shake it at once.

Then how to shake hands with others? It is not right (shake)hands for too long or too short. Three to five seconds is the best, not more than 30seconds. There are also some (point) that should be paid attention to when shaking hands. You can't shake hands (careless) or with your left hand. Before you shake hands, you should take off (you) hat,gloves and sunglasses first. You had better not refuse to shake hands with others or shake hands while having your other hand  your pocket.
