Guangzhou olive stone carving (榄雕) is a famous traditional art in Guangdong with a history of over 300 years. It is made from the stone of Chinese olives, which are small but hard.
To make a good olive stone carving, a carver needs great skills and patience. First, they choose the best olive stones—they must be round and without any cracks. Then they draw a design on the stone carefully. Some complex works take several months to finish. A famous olive stone carving work is a small boat with many small windows and even tiny people inside.
Today, Guangzhou olive stone carving is a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Young people are less interested in learning it because it takes a long time to master the skills and the work is hard.
