The City Birdwatcher: How a Hobby Opened My Eyes

Hello, I'm Sam. My favourite free-time activity might surprise you: bird watching in the city.

How did it start?

I started this activity when I was stuck at home with a broken leg last year. From my bedroom window, I noticed a small, bright red bird visiting the same tree every day. Out of boredom, I began to draw it and search online to find its name (it was a scarlet finch). That small discovery gave me a huge sense of joy.

When and where do I do it now?

Now, my leg is fine, but the habit stays. I do it almost every day, for just  15-20 minutes after school. My "bird watching spot" isn't a forest; it's my local city park, my balcony, and even the schoolyard. I carry a small notebook and my phone (for taking pictures and using a bird identification app).

Why do I like it?

Most importantly, it lets me see my busy city in a completely new, peaceful way. I've learned to notice tiny details: the different songs in the morning and evening, how seasons change the types of birds. It makes me really happy when I identify a new species. I've even started sharing my findings and photos on a local nature blog. I find it fun to connect with other young birdwatchers online. This hobby doesn't just teach me about birds; it teaches me patience, observation, and to find wonder in ordinary places.

My favorite novel is Aroundthe World in Eighty Days. It was written by Jules Verne, a French writer. Jules Verne was regarded as father of Modern Science Fiction because he devoted (奉献) himselfto literature and wrote several well-known scientific romances.

The exciting story of Around the World in Eighty Days tells us about an English gentleman whose name is Mr Phileas Fogg. He travels around the world in eighty days. From the story, we can see the writer's love for the sea, traveling and adventure (冒险). In fact, they played an important role in his life. Thanks to the writer's imagination, language skills and scientific and geographical knowledge, we can feel as if we were there when we read the story. Use words with proper meanings and grammatical rules to fill in the blanks. (Only one word for one blank. )

Last month, some groups of students in their community made a survey about "How do people spend their free time?" The following diagrams (图表) show some results of it:

Nоw, Не Fеngting also mаkes clоthеs fоr sоmе Сhinese traditiоnal  likе thе Sрring Festivаl, thе Dragоn Воat Festivаl аnd so on. Thеre are manу different kinds оf nicе pattеrns, suсh as dragons  flоwеrs on the clоthes. "Уоung рeople likе them," shе saуs. work is grоwing as she brings оld skills to new things. "I hорe mоre pеoрlе аrоund thе world will lоve our сulture," shе says.
