Leo's Story: Music That Connects

Leo, a 15-year-old from Toronto, Canada, picked up his grandfather's old guitar three years ago. At first, he just wanted to learn his favourite songs. "Playing guitar helped me reduce stress after school," he says. But as he got better, an idea struck him. He noticed many elderly people in his neighbourhood seemed lonely. "I believe music can bring people together," Leo thought. He started "Porch Sessions," where he plays gentle music on his front porch every Sunday afternoon. Neighbors, especially seniors, began to gather, bringing chairs and smiles. Now, it's a weekly community event. "It's no longer just my hobby," Leo smiles. "It's our moment of connection. I feel a real sense of achievement when I see people chatting and laughing."

Samira's Story: Art That Protects

In a coastal town in Australia,  14-year-old  Samira  has a unique hobby:  she observes seabirds and paints detailed pictures of them. She started this hobby during a family beach trip four years ago. "I just loved how free they looked,"  she recalls. However,  she  soon  learned that many of these birds were in danger due to plastic pollution. Samira thinks art can be a powerful voice. She began creating large, colourful posters of the birds with messages about keeping beaches clean. She sells prints of her paintings online and uses all the money to support a local wildlife rescue group. "My hobby allows me to learn about nature and allows me to protect it at the same time," Samira explains. "It's my way of helping."

These stories show that a hobby can start as a simple personal interest and grow into a force for good, creating ripples of positive change far beyond oneself.

In a dance room in Changchun, Jilin, a group of women wearing ballet dresses move beautifully across the floor. This is a special ballet 1 for older women, called Ballet Grandmas. The members show that it's never too late to 2 your dream.

For many members aged 40 to over 70, ballet is more than a 3 . It's a dream come true. "When I was young, I 4 watching ballet shows," said Kong Xiaoli, 70, one of the first members of the group. "But life got in the way. Now I'm retired (退休的), 5 I can do what I love."

Many grandmas joined the group without dance 6 , but it didn't stop them. "I didn't learn ballet before," said Zhang Meizhu, who is in her 70s and has osteoporosis (骨质疏松症). At first, her family was against her joining the group as they were 7 she might get hurt. But she refused to 8 .

Another member, Zhang Weihua, 56, kept 9 even though her family didn't believe her at first. When they saw how confident and 10 she became, they supported (支持) her dream of dancing after retirement.

Sandy, aged 24. She is a worker of a bank. She always hates to wear boring uniforms at work. She likes wearing bright, colorful clothes in her free time. Jeans and T-shirts are her favorite. "I never buy very expensive clothes, because I like wearing fashionable clothes and fashion changes all the time," Sandy said.

Molly, aged 38. She is an office worker for a fashion magazine. Usually, she likes wearing beautiful dress at work. "I like to buy some high-end (高档的) clothes, because they can show my style and taste," Molly said.

All in all, the clothes different people like say a lot about them. So take a look at your wardrobe (衣橱). What do your clothes say about you?

Why do you need hobbies? A study has found that people are more positive when they take part in a relaxing activity.  Scientists also think they might be good for your brain.

How do you choose the right hobby? Start with what you enjoyed in the past. Did you once play football?  If you find it isn't for you, stop and turn to something new. Probably joining a class or a team will give you a chance to meet other people.

Which relaxing activities are good for physical health? It's clear that exercise is going to be good for your body, for example, walking.  A review of 94 studies found that dancing three times a week improved balance in older people. Getting out in nature is helpful, whether you're hiking or doing something less active.

Which hobbies keep your mind active?  Playing the piano or listening to your favourite band can help you make it. Researchers have found reading is also good for your brain.
